I forgot to tell ya'll but WE HAVE A FLOOR AGAIN!

The tile was installed two weekends ago and we love it. Really brightens up the entire kitchen and just really makes it a nice room on it's own rather than just flowing into the living room area. Dishwasher has also been repaired too which is just fantastic. I know it was saving us money in our energy bill BUT I really was tired of dishes piling up on the counter (#firstworldproblems). The deal is whoever makes dinner, the other has to wash dishes and considering how many pots/pans I get dirty that can't go on the dishwasher, the addition of plates/bowls/cups on top of that was making things crazy. So, yes, repair the dishwasher, save my marriage XP

In the world of Impulse Purchases, my spatula designed by Kristen Bell arrived in the mail last week too!

Proceeds went to the No Kid Hungry program so it was for a good cause. Also, I <3 Kristen so much and this is probably the closest I will get to having her autograph so yeah. I'm a dork, it makes me smile. If you didn't see her shenanigans with the senior citizens during Hurricane Irma, I highly suggest browsing her Instagram/Twitter feed for a few minutes.

When we went to Wisconsin this summer, Tim went through the boxes of stuff in his parent's basement for things that he wanted to bring back (this is what happens when you buy an SUV). Anyway, one of the treasures we did find were his Star Wars toys, mainly a few large vehicles. So last night, in a fit of cleaning, I rearranged some of my Star Wars shelf to highlight our vintage collection (I reclaimed my toys from my parent's house last year but hadn't made space for them). I don't have it all out yet, but I got a few things in nice prime spots to hightlight them:

I still have a few figures I'd like to display plus a LARGE collection of micro-machines playsets. #nerdproblems - I am going to either move or maybe even downsize my Yoda collection as I don't really focus on that anymore. My collecting focus for Star Wars now is mostly LADIES.

Last but not least, I finished playing Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice last night and OMG THE EMOTIONS!

I want to do an in-depth write up later but this game was beautiful and I loved the story, which kept me going even when the game got rough. It was very short, about 12 hours, but it was a smaller gaming company. Tim got me fancy headphones right before I started playing it so I got to have the full experience since it recommends playing with nice headphones that can give you the full range of sounds.

I love Senua. She is right up there with Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite: I want an action figure of her for my desk.

...actually, I have that "Make your own Funko Pop" downstairs...maybe I could make myself a little Senua! PROJECTS!!!!!!!

Bedtime now - I am trying to finish the last two books for a conference I'm attending next month. Neither of them are grabbing me as much as the others so it has been a struggle. Plus SO MANY good books are coming out right now and distracting me with their covers and blurbs. THE STRUGGLE IS REAL! #librarianproblems

One of my friends in my Star Wars Club emailed me this t-shirt. I debated ordering it, because after shipping it was kinda pricey for a t-shirt but...I pretty made HAD to have it for my collection, didn't I?

They are actually on sale now at a discount, I think the sale ends today? But I think you can agree, this was a necessity.

Plus, it is still March so I'm calling it a birthday gift to myself...

...along with the other two geeky shirts I just ordered from Hot Topic...

"This is a rebellion. I rebel" says Jyn Erso in the Rogue One trailer.

Except she doesn't say this in the movie. In fact, a lot of things shown and said in the trailers for Rogue One never made it to the big screen. (for an in-depth look at the movie that wasn't, check out this great Slashfilm article)

I will say that this is the BEST of the Star Wars prequel films. I would not rank it anywhere with the classic trilogy and I still found Force Awakens more fun and engaging.

more thoughts, with spoilers )

I didn't hate it, I enjoyed the movie for the most part. I'd rather watch it than AoTC again. I think it is cool that they made a Star Wars movie that didn't rely on a sequel or Jedi. But there was a lot of potential for this film to be much more than it was but I think they were distracted by the same things that got Lucas during the prequels - the ability to use CGI in new ways. If they had focused less on that and more on the real people and their stories, Rogue One could have been a much stronger film.

FINALLY!

Finally!!! It's just embarrassing how long it took me, of all people, to see this!

I thought I was going to get kicked out of my Star Wars Club this weekend when I told them I hadn't seen the movie yet LOL. Rectified that tonight.

I have many thoughts. Some good, some not.

Please link your reaction posts in the comments if you can! I can read them now LOL!

Might try to see Moana this weekend, if time allows. Apparently I'm starting 2017 by watching all the movie I *just* missed in 2016 :P
orangerful: (aluminum falcon // snarkel)
**waves** Hi new friends!!

Okay, I feel like life is settling back to normal after the trip. There is still a small pile of laundry on the floor that will get done Sunday, but I found some time tonight to sit and read LJ so that was nice.

Tomorrow we are going to RenFest! We missed it last year because of the buying a house/getting married. Believe me, I was very upset! But we are sneaking it in tomorrow, the final weekend. I just want my TURKEY LEG! And maybe a bee sting (hard cider + mead = yum! You don't worry about what time it is when you're in medieval England!)

BIGGEST NEWS OF THE DAY - DONALD GLOVER WILL BE LANDO! I went from having no interest in the Han Solo prequel movie to being totally invested.

Things that everyone already saw but I'm just now seeing - GUARDIAN OF THE GALAXY VOL 2 TEASER! I'm feeling good about this, mostly because it is the same team as the first movie and that feels right. No change in director or anything like that. And I like that the trailer is just about the group, not trying to show me a million new villains or subplots etc. The first movie was such a pleasant surprise.

I've never been into makeup, but I see there is a #nomakeup movement going on right now. One of my favorite artists just posted on her blog about how to make your own natural face powder. Seems legit. I'm actually kinda tempted to try it.

Round 87 sign ups are open for [livejournal.com profile] character20n20 and I'm trying to brainstorm who I want to focus on this time. Last time I did Rey. Almost feel like I should do a TV show character so I have more images to choose from...anyway, I have some time to ponder.

Anyway, going to bed now because gotta get up early for RenFest - the actually had big issues with the car line last weekend (people were stuck for hours in traffic) so we're going to try to get their right when it opens.

Toodles!
orangerful: (one girl // orangerful)
You make lemonade! No wait, I mean, you stylishly cram the pictures into one large poster frame:

Eventually I will buy 3 11x14 frames but for now, this will work! @starwars #disneymovierewards #posters

We will have officially been moved into this house for a year a week from today so I'm getting this whole "OMG WE HAVE DONE NOTHING!" loop in my brain, trying to hang pictures, tidy up the yard, etc. I mean, wtf, how did this bag of clothes sit here for a YEAR and never go to Goodwill? I suck.

Oh, if you are on imzy, I made a little personal blog there. Not sure how much I will use it compared to here, but if you are there, feel free to join/follow: https://www.imzy.com/orangerful

Also, if you are not on Imzy and still need an invite, I think I have 5 more? Let me know.

And now, to bed! We have friends coming over tomorrow so I should wake up at a decent hour!

toodles.

Should I watch the new trailer? I am already very interested in this movie since seeing the sizzle reel from SDCC and I'm getting to the "spoiler free" point that I hit with Force Awakens. I really enjoyed seeing that and not knowing anything. I watched the main trailer for that move though...

Thoughts? How spoilery is it?

orangerful: (one girl // orangerful)
Wow, I haven't done one of these challenges in a long time! I know they are not as fancy or pretty as some of the other icons, but I'm happy with this set. And I love Daisy Ridley's face. I still have a few more to make for myself, but these are the entries for the challenge:

Lots of Rey! )
orangerful: (star wars vii cautious // orangerful)
I finally got to watch my blu-ray of Force Awakens yesterday YAY!!!!!!!!! The first of many many viewings, I am sure. I feel like this one will definitely be a good "background" movie for when I'm working on stuff. I've seen it 5 times now and I think most of it is committed to memory LOL.

Anyway, I had a thought last night while watching a certain scene:

SPOILERS for TFA if you haven't seen it !! )

In short, ADAM DRIVER'S FAAAAAAAAAAAACE. LOL. He really is a good actor, I really have liked him in everything I have seen him in.
orangerful: (star wars figures // spitefairy)
What a week, talk about hitting the ground running! I'm sorry I haven't been commenting much, but I pretty much overbooked myself this week when it came to work and I have been exhausted in the evenings.

That and I'm addicted to Stardew Valley so I've been unwinding by playing that in the evenings before dinner.

BUT I did manage to pick up some Star Wars TFA figures, finally!

Finally found Rey (and couldn't resist grabbing Han and Finn) #starwars #toys #collection

Usually, I am an opener, but I really love the box art for the Rey figure and I haven't been able to bring myself to free her from the packaging. (this is probably my Daisy Ridley girl!crush talking, you can't see it in the picture, but she's in her final movie moments outfit and looking badass. The face sculpt is actually *really good* for a kid's toy too!)

I got my copy of the TFA blu-ray on Tuesday from Amazon. I opted to just keep it easy and pre-ordered from Amazon rather than messing with Target's "exclusives". From my club members, I have heard the packaging left something to be desired and since the extras are just streaming on Disney Movies Anywhere, I'm wondering how long until they just let anyone buy them.

And then the Rogue One trailer dropped yesterday and WOW. I really hadn't been paying much attention to this movie. I was worried that Disney was going to kill my love of the franchise by cranking out movies too quickly, flooding the market like they did with the Marvel stuff. But the trailer just blew me away and now I'm really curious about it!

And now [livejournal.com profile] jediknightmuse alerted me to the Build-A-Bear Wicket exclusive so I may need to find the closest store and make a trip in the next few weeks.

LOL when I started this point there was going to be some substance but...yeah, my brain is tired and everything is STAR WARS and that's pretty great. :)

(I also impulse purchased The Fugitive with Harrison Ford because when we drove through Chicago, I was talking to Tim about the scene where the cops hear the train on the phone and know he is in Chicago and that's all I know about Chicago and then it was $7 so WHY NOT!)

(oh and I also kinda sorta pre-ordered X-Men: First Class so I can have all the X-Men movies. X-Men, X2, First Class and Days of Future Past. THAT IS ALL THERE IS! Until Apocalypse comes out...which better not suck, these last two were so good)

(Clearly I should delete the Amazon app from my phone...all of these orders were made during the drive back from Wisconsin)

(I'm just abusing parenthesis now...I need to get to bed because I'm visiting a school tomorrow morning for a parent brunch to tell them about all the awesome the library has to offer)

(goodnight)

Saga, Volume 5Saga, Volume 5 by Brian K. Vaughan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Oh Saga, you are so messed up, I just can't even. But as you have been so wrong/right since the first issue, it is almost comforting in twisted way. As usual, I couldn't put down this volume until I finished it and then I was sad it was over again. Lots of twists and turns I did not see coming!

I can't wait for this series to be over so I can sit and read it all the way through as I am sure I miss so much when it comes to the story/foreshadowing etc but only picking these up every few months.

Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure (Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens)Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure by Cecil Castellucci

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fun middle-grade read that fills in the story between ESB and RotJ for Princess Leia. The "tie-in" to Force Awakens is pretty slim (the prologue/epilogue, only a few pages, make the connection). I thought Castelluccci and Fry captured the voice of characters we already know and did a good job adventuring around the galaxy far far away.

Definitely recommended for Star Wars fans. I hope there are more Princess Leia adventures some day! I would love to see some stories that take place prior to A New Hope (though I know the 'Rebels' TV series is using a lot of that time period and Leia makes at least one cameo)

The Bazaar of Bad DreamsThe Bazaar of Bad Dreams by Stephen King

3.5 stars

FINALLY finished this today. I had it as an audiobook and my commute is fairly short now, plus with the week of snow I didn't get to listen. I'm happy I listened to it rather than continued to read, I think the voices really brought some of the stories to life. The collection gathered stories that had been previously published elsewhere. They weren't perfect, but it was a great variety and showed King's range and that he's still got it.

Descender, Vol. 1: Tin StarsDescender, Vol. 1: Tin Stars by Jeff Lemire

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I picked this up because of Jeff Lemire, but it was Dustin Nguyen's artwork that really made this book perfect. In a story about a strange attack by gigantic robots, Nguyen's gorgeous style (reminiscent of watercolor paintings) keeps the story grounded. I loved this first book and cannot wait to see where the story goes! I already adore Tim-21 and I want to see him save the galaxy!

Ms. Marvel, Vol. 4: Last DaysMs. Marvel, Vol. 4: Last Days by G. Willow Wilson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This may be my favorite volume since the first one, lots of forward momentum with the story and the characters, especially Kamala. I can't wait to see what happens in Volume 5! Honestly, the weakest thing was the "bonus" comic which was a team up with Spider-Man. It was cute but after the awesome that was the rest of the book, it felt a little out of place.

Star Wars: Princess LeiaStar Wars: Princess Leia by Mark Waid

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this comic, far more than I expected. Mark Waid does a wonderful job keeping the action and adventure of the films in this comic, along with creating a good side mission for Princess Leia. I liked that it didn't depend too much on inside jokes and winks to the rest of the Star Wars universe, which I find can sometimes derail this kinds of collections.

A pleasant surprise! I hope we get more stories of Leia's solo missions (NOT Solo missions...that's the realm of fanfic!)

A New Hope: The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy (Star Wars: Episode IV)A New Hope: The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy by Alexandra Bracken

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

While not as strong as Angleberger's RotJ novelization (and that may have more to do with the source material than anything else) Bracken's take on ANH was a really fun read. This would also be a great book for kids to read and then discuss the different ways to tell a story, especially when it comes to film versus writing.

Bracken's approach was to break down the story of Star Wars to each of the main trio's point of view. The first part is all told from Princess Leia's side, with her getting the quest to take the Death Star plans to General Kenobi and being captured by the Empire. Bracken pulls from not just the film, but the previous novelzations and the radio drama to imagine scenes of what happened to Leia before Luke and Han arrived.

The second part is from Han's point of view, picking up where we meet him in the movie, in the cantina on Tatooine. The third is Luke's story, starting right after the escape from the Death Star.

Well written and unique, definitely a must-read for Star Wars fans.

Lafayette in the Somewhat United StatesLafayette in the Somewhat United States by Sarah Vowell

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I'm really glad I listened to this book rather than reading it. Even though it is only 268 pages, it isn't a quick read, with so many names and dates being thrown at you. It has been a long time since I revisited American history and even longer since I thought about the Revolutionary War. This book taught me more than I ever knew about MY OWN COUNTRY'S HISTORY! It was a little depressing to realize how little I knew.

But I loved the audiobook because Sarah Vowell reads it, with her own unique voice, and has a cast of famous actors that lend their voices and help you keep some of the "characters" straight. (Nick Offerman as George Washington is now my official voice for Washington.)

So if you feel like being reminded of how much history you have forgotten (or maybe you were never taught) this is a great listen for your commute (especially if you are like me and live on the east coast and regularly drive past some of the Revolutionary war battle fields)

So You Want to Be a Jedi? (Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back)So You Want to Be a Jedi? by Adam Gidwitz

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I cannot say enough about these Star Wars books written by some of my favorite children's authors. Adam Gidwitz's take on 'Empire Strikes Back' not only puts YOU in the role of Luke Skywalker, telling his story from first person, it also provides lessons on how to be a Jedi, teaching the reader ways to calm their mind, meditate, think before acting, and focus.

If you know a kid/were a kid who loves Star Wars, this series is a great way to explore the many ways a story can be told.

Spent Saturday cleaning up and then went to my parent's today and got more stuff LOL. I think Tim was horrified when my Mom gave me three bags/boxes of Star Wars toys (which I had asked for because nostalgia)

Reclaimed some of my #toys today, time for a stroll down memory lane. @starwars #starwars #jurassicpark

So I spent about two hours tonight going through one of the bags, wiping off the dust, and them playing with the toys.

Possibly one of my most favorite toys of all time #starwars #rancor @starwars

Possibly my favorite Star Wars toy. My Rancor got a lot of playtime because RotJ was my favorite of the movies when I was a kid (probably because of the super-mega-happy-ending) and I would drag my toy box out and play with my figure while I was watching.

Sidenote: I was digging through my parent's DVDs and found out my brother bought the Special Edition Limited Release of the Original Trilogy that has the ORIGINAL THEATRICAL RELEASES on the bonus discs!!!!!!! I totally "borrowed" them because I want to watch RotJ again but I know the one on my blu-ray copy will make me rage (GIVE ME MY YUB NUB DAMMIT! And don't get me started on the awful song added to Jabba's palace...)

Fun with my slo-mo camera mode under the cut )

Only sad thing was opening up my Tie Fighter and seeing that the batteries had exploded in the back (well, they were probably 30 years old LOL). That is the only real damage I have seen so far that I am sad about.

I'll probably post more photos as I go through the bag. There's some Jurassic Park stuff in there too which makes me happy. I HAVE A T-REX! :D

Speaking of Adam Driver, Star Wars + SNL is a good mix:

and I can't remember if I posted this one so I am doing it again because it makes me laugh EVERY. DAMN. TIME. (I totally know collector's like this. I love them but...they can be such nerds LOL)

Just wanted to link these two blog posts about Rey because they made me both cry tears of rage and joy at the same time.

Rey is not a role model for little girls (spoilers ahead) EDIT: this article title is misleading, click through and read it, it's not what you think)

Rey from 'Force Awakens' is NOT a Mary Sue!

I have some other thoughts to post as well, mostly reflections on my reaction to Rey and Finn, both things that I wish I didn't have to react to. But I should probably not type those up while on the desk at work because it will require me to think a lot LOL.

On the lighter side of things, I typed up an incredibly long post about standing in line for 'Star Wars', how this was the last time I would probably do that just because the "art" of waiting in line has gone away.
orangerful: (star wars figures // spitefairy)
So now that I have seen Force Awakens (twice!) and loved it, the collecting bug is biting me. I'm going to try to stay as calm as I can, maybe just focus on the main 3, mostly on Rey, but I did like Finn and Poe too...maybe a few BB-8 items (I got my Her Universe pin which was "free" with a purchase on black friday)

Just paid for my first collectible. Disney Movie Rewards has a deal that if you link your account to Fandango, you can get a "free" poster of Rey + the option to get a 3 poster set for 19.77 (I see what they did there).

It said limited quantities and I'm a sucker for limited quantities so I ordered them.

They are a nice size too, 11x17, which should look cool on the wall if I can arrange them right. Don't ask me where though as I have used up a lot of wall space already...maybe the guest bedroom? I dunno.

After going to the mall and movies for 3 days in a row, I managed to catch a bug. I stayed home sick yesterday because I did NOT want to get blamed for spreading a bug around the week of Christmas. Today was my comp day for Friday (since we will be off for Christmas and I would have been off anyway because I work Saturday) so I got to recover the rest of the way. Tomorrow I work 1-9 though and that is going to suuuuuuuuuck. Though the kids do get out of school so I'm hoping we will have some business as families look for things to take on the road with them. Maybe.

Sylvia and I attempted to try jamberry nail things today and we were AWFUL at them. I was doing pretty well with my dominant hand, though the stickers didn't cover my nail right, but once I had to switch, it was all down hill. They look so cool, in theory, but I clearly don't have the skills or patience to put them on. It was like applying decals to a Barbie Dream House only worse because now they are stuck to my hands and look stupid.

Christmas/holiday cards and mix CDs have been delayed until next week as the CDs were delivered to work the day I stayed home sick. Sorry! I'm really happy with the mix though! I had the test copy in the car last week and really liked it, let it cycle through a few times before going back to my book.

I can't believe Christmas is only a few days away! I wrapped all the presents this afternoon, the tree looks glorious with the piles of gifts underneath. We are going to host Christmas morning at our house with Sylvia and Cynthia since they have hosted the past few years. Tim's already got plans to make pancakes. Should be nice.
orangerful: (star wars vii girl // orangerful)
Well, I've had about 24 hours to gather my thoughts about the movie last night. I know it was a good movie because I can't stop thinking about it. Not in nit-picky ways, but in wondering about things that happened, what they mean in the grand scheme of things, and how it will all play out in the end.

My non-spoilery thoughts are that it was good. Not amazing or perfect or the best, but really good. Very enjoyable. Nothing too surprising, and, in fact, it did what I wanted it to do. Really, much of the applause should go to the editors of the trailers, who did a fantastic job of teasing us but not giving things away.

So, obviously this review is going to have spoilers, but I will hide them under the cut. DO NOT READ IT UNTIL YOU'VE SEEN THE MOVIE! I don't want to ruin it for anyone.

Okay, here we go:

Me working through my thoughts, obviously TFA Spoilers - don't say I didn't warn you!!!!!!! )
orangerful: (star wars vii cautious // orangerful)
oh this week. it has worn me down! Sorry to disappear, especially after adding a bunch of new people LOL! With the Thanksgiving prep and other stuff, I just haven't had a chance to sit at my computer and read blogs.

I did go see Mockingjay Part 2 on Sunday with Sylvia. About a third of the way through, I was like "I've read the books, I know how this goes...why did I want to see this again?". The movie was well done and it did stay very true to the story, which means it was hella depressing. Tim said it was the lowest box office of any Hunger Games. Someone online attributed this to Jennifer Lawrence's fame (that she is bigger than Katniss so people can't believe she is Katniss, which I call bullshit on), but I think that with all the recent turmoil in Paris and Syria being seen every day, the idea of watching a movie like Mockingjay really isn't appealing.

Despite my best efforts at remaining distant, Star Wars fever is kicking in:

Less than a month!!!! Getting excited!!! #starwars #forceawakens #movies

I saw an article going around on Facebook about Lucas disowning the new franchise and I actually felt a bit relieved but if anyone doesn't get Star Wars, it's Lucas. I didn't even click through, just sorta laughed and kept scrolling.

I'm doing my best to avoid spoilers, but as we get closer they are EVERYWHERE! I'm just not going to go on tumblr now until next year, I swear.

This should be an easy year for friends and family when it comes to buying me presents because Star Wars is EVERYWHERE! I pretty much want Star Wars and Torrid LOL.

The turkey was not as thawed as I had anticipated but I went ahead and dumped salt all over it to get a dry brine going. I'm hoping by Thursday it's ready to go because...well it's gotta go!

Anyway, need to get to bed. Library is open 9-5 tomorrow for the holiday so I can't sleep in like I usually do on Wednesdays (normally I'm 1-9).

Toodle pip!
