Challenge #3: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why?

I would love to get coffee with Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. They seem like a hoot. I have adored Kristen since Veronica Mars and I watched every episode of ‘The Good Place’ and I am sad she is not on my TV every week anymore. The two of them are #relationshipgoals and I think it would just be fun to hang out and chat with her about whatever. She has a beautiful way of looking at the world.

Next up, I would to meet up with Rian Johnson in a bar for drinks, because I’d want to loosen his tongue a bit and then get him to explain his vision for the final movie in the sequel trilogy. I’m sure I would have to sign a NDA afterwards, but it would be worth it to just know. I would even pay for the drinks. Something tells me Johnson would just be a fun person to talk to.

Last but not least, I would want to host a HUGE dinner for the Oxtra and Dicebreaker teams. I love watching them interact on streams and even if I was running around filling drinks and serving food and didn’t get to talk, I would love to just listen to them all laughing and talking. Maybe we could even find time for a game together! They are all so down to Earth, I just feel like listening to their opinions on life, the universe and everything would make for a lovely evening.

Oddly enough, I’m struggling to think of an fictional characters I want to hang out with right now. The only one that comes to mind is I would want to get a burger of the day at Bob’s Burgers. But I would sit in a booth and just observe the shenanigans LOL.

comments

In an effort to use this blog more, I'm going to participate in the annual 'Snowflake Challenge' so I post on a regular basis. Hopefully, eventually, I will just make some time for blogging and enjoy the process of getting some of the thoughts constantly rolling around in my head committed to the digital page.

Enter, the Snowflake Challenge (details here)

Challenge #1 In your own space, introduce yourself!

I'm orangerful aka Sam. I devoted so much to that show in the early years. So many Friday nights at home in high school because I couldn't miss an episode. Wrote my first fan-fic, got into the fandom community. But the mythology was a mess and promises were broken over and over. And I may still be bitter.

Honorable mention goes to Game of Thrones. And everyone knows why.

The old flame you don't see very often any more but whom you still really enjoy getting together with for a few drinks and maybe a pleasant nostalgic romp:
Whedonverse, but specifically Buffy. When I broke up with X-Files, Buffy was there to show me what a series where the writers actually tracked the mythology and stories looked like. I see them every day, in the sense that I have all the DVDs, figures, and books on display but I watched it SO MUCH at the start that I don't even need to rewatch them anymore, I can just close my eyes and see the scenes LOL. But every now and then, I need to watch Buffy, Angel, or Firefly and remember when these were shows on regular TV.

The mysterious dark one whom you used to sit up with talking until 3 AM at weird coffee houses and with whom you were quite smitten until you realized they really were fucking creepy:
Riverdale. That first season was so much fun. It was self-aware and turned the squeaky clean comic world of Archie upside down. The mystery was twisty enough to keep me guessing. And the characters were just quirky enough to pull me in. But the second and third season got into a zone of ridiculous I could no longer take. It was never realistic, but you can only push it so far before it becomes unwatchable for me.

The one you spent a whole weekend in bed with and who drank up all your liquor and whom you'd still really like to get with again, although you're relieved they don't actually live in town:
"Dark", the German Netflix sci-fi show. I binged that second season hard and I want to know what happens next but I'm okay waiting because it has time travel and I'm so confused about who was where when what how now?

The steady:
I debated between my two big fandoms here, but in the end, it's gotta be Star Wars. I've been a fan since birth and it is the happy place I go back to when I need to escape all reality.

The alluring stranger whom you've flirted with at parties but have never gotten really serious with:
American Gods. We've watched the show but I'm not compelled to go beyond it in any way.

The one you hang out with and have vague fantasies about maybe having a thing with, but ultimately you're just good buddies:
Attack on Titan. I watch the show but I'm not hardcore enough to read the manga. But when it is on, I'm ready to talk about it and rewatch the whole series, until we are caught up and another show takes its place.

The one your friends keep introducing you to and who seems like a hell of a cool person except it's never really gone anywhere:
Star Trek Discovery. I keep meaning to watch it, I see little conversations about it all over the place on blogs but I've never made the time for it, mostly because the only way for me to watch is DVD from the library. CBS All Access is a stupid business model.

The one who's slept with all your friends, and you keep looking at them and thinking, "How the hell did they land all these cool people?"
Marvel stuff. I mean, I get it, I was there at the start and saw the movies but at this point, I'm amazed how many people are still there for it all.

thenewbuzzwuzz mentioned Supernatural in hers and I agree with that too.

The one who gave you the best damned summer of your life and against whom you measure all other potential partners:
Hannibal. I can't even remember how I ended up watching this show, a series that should not have appealed to me - its crime, its gore. But it was also REALLY clever and smart and kept me guessing. I hadn't been so enraptured with a show in such a long time when I stumbled into this one.

The one you recently met at a party and would like to get to know better:
Mindhunter. I watched the first season when it came out and loved it, just finished the second and LOVED IT. But they were both binges and I need to go back and really give each episode the attention it deserves.

The old flame that you wouldn't totally object to hooking up with again for a one night romp if only they'd clean up a bit:
If it hadn't been for the lousy 4th season, I would say Veronica Mars.

Maybe I will say Stranger Things here. I didn't hate the latest season, I was just unimpressed with most of it. I'd be there for another season IF things get tightened up a bit and the characters are less obnoxious.

Your hot new flame:
The EXPANSE!!!!!!!! Three seasons and I still feel like we're in the honeymoon phase.

and Schitt's Creek, which I also randomly show up and tell people to watch without them asking. Right now that show is perfect to me.

The one who stole your significant other:
Tim really isn't in to TV shows, but I know when he likes one because he will ask for it after it airs. Right now, it is 'Killjoys'. But beyond tv and movies, he's hardcore into Star Citizen, a game that is still in testing. Pretty sure he was up until 2am flying his ship around last night.

comments

My Star Wars club had their meeting on Sunday! It was a great turnout, a post Celebration run down. I haven't been to a Star Wars Celebration since CIII and I'm fine with that - I prefer my conventions to be multi-fandom where possible because I love too many things. But I did enjoy listening to everyone talk about their weekend. It's a great group of nerds and we have fun.

Couple of highlights - I picked up this little lady for $1

I am calling myself an Expanse Evangelist now. Every time someone starts to talk to me about tv shows, I immediately bring it up. One of my Star Wars buddies was chatting with me about Firefly, which I was also praising like crazy back in the day, telling everyone to go see 'Serenity' and he did and he loved it and now he was the one telling me that there were Firefly books out. So of course I had to ask if he had watched Expanse LOL. I really feel like it is a perfect fit for Firefly fans.

Hope everyone else had a good weekend!

Sidenote: I realized that I never posted about my PAX East adventures!!! I will do something soon because I had a lot of fun and there were a bunch of game I think many of you would enjoy!

But now, TO BED! Because Monday was a Monday. Why did I schedule a program the first day of the week????

comments

According to my inbox, I'm 72 entries behind on LJ/DW...oops.

BUT ANYWAY!

While I LOVED the first season, I wasn't actually thrilled with the second and third season of Veronica Mars. The second season has too much "retconning" of what "really" happened in season 1 and Season 3 was better but just didn't have the same level of intrigue.

I funded the Kickstarter for the movie but only watched it once when I hosted a release party at my house. I can't remember much about it, so maybe I should watch it again.

One of my main problems is that I never shipped Veronica/Logan so I was perturbed that show creator Rob Thomas was all about them as a couple.

Yet, I'm oddly excited about the new season on Hulu.

Maybe it is just because I adore Kristen Bell and I'm happy to see her on my TV AGAIN. I always liked Veronica as a character, and the whole cast was always wonderful so I'm really hoping they capture that season 1 magic again with a mystery that has plenty of twists and turn but also some good character moments.

So, yeah, I'm totally going to watch Season 4 on Hulu in July because even the bad episodes of Veronica Mars were so damn watchable.

comments

I'm the only person in the world who is not interested in Avengers:Endgame, but I'm happy for all of you.

I just hope you're ready for all of my fangirling and squealing when December comes around and Rise of Skywalker comes out. I understand your feelings, MCU fans, and I will have similar feelings once RoS premieres.

I had 14 people come to my photo program! For an adult program on a gorgeous spring day, I'm counting that as a success!

I'm low-key freaking out right now because TWO branch managers (one of them being MY manager) have announced their retirements on June 30th. Which means there will be TWO openings I can apply for. I feel good about it, I just have to not flub the interview like I did last time (though I don't think that was meant to be, so maybe it was the universe holding me back). No idea when the interviews will be, kinda hoping they will happen sooner rather than later, mostly because I don't want my poor branch to be floating without a manager for the whole summer.

I'll be high-key freaking out once a date is announced. Good news is that my resume is pretty much ready to go! Just need to tweak the cover letter and then review my notes like crazy.

comments

Poor Pillowfort AGAIN. They apparently had an "incident" yesterday with someone spamming child porn/sexually explicit content so they have to quickly update their ToS to be a little clearer on what can and cannot be posted. And now the comments are full of people attempting to justify their child porn/eerily underage porn collection and it is just weird. Or people saying that they are going to be attacked for shipping certain people.

Is that what Tumblr had become? A bunch of people fighting over fandom rather than enjoying it?

And, it's like, do they even READ what they are posting? They are like "oh but there are plenty of teen protags in anime and so much porn about them everywhere else!" yeah, well then go everywhere else if you know you can post your creepy child anime porn artwork there. That is fine. Just not on Pillowfort.

I dunno, I consider myself a pretty liberal person, relatively progressive, but reading people's comments that the Harry Potter characters are 14 in a book and they just HAVE to make artwork of these 14 year olds making out and they MUST be allowed to share it online...then make your own website?

At this point, I'm just really annoyed with the Tumblr people and don't want them on PF if that is how they are going to behave. I know it isn't everyone that uses Tumblr, but wow, it does make it FEEL like everyone, doesn't it?

comments

I haven't listened to Jason Mraz in years. I loved his first album when it came out (waaaaay back when I was in college and had my own radio show. You could *stream* it ONLINE! So high-tech for the early 2000s!) I even got to meet him when he stopped by the radio station I interned at my last year of college (as you can see from this photo, I clearly wasn't interested). I wasn't as into the second album and I don't think I've bothered to listen to the ones after that.

But then we were listening to NPR's Ask Me Another on the way to Wisconsin and Mraz was on to promote the musical Waitress, which he apparently assisted Sara Bareilles in writing and now she has convinced him to take on the role of the doctor. And then he talked about how he was putting out his last album because he is done with the spot light and just wants to go back to his farm and grow avocados. And it was so endearing, so I went on Spotify and downloaded the new singles and they sound like Jason Mraz and it turns out I apparently needed that bouncy fun music in my life.

And since this seems to be a music post, I've also discovered (a few months ago) the band Jukebox the Ghost and I love their new album. Also, lots of bouncy songs though the lyrics can get snarky at times, which crack me up. I've always a singer/songwriter person and I pay very close attention to lyrics.

Last but not least, I am freakin' obsessed with Bastille's new single "Quarter Past Midnight". Like, I went online and found the lyrics so I could memorize them faster. I love cranking up the volume when I'm driving home from work at night.

The thing that really hit me about this song too was how it is sort of the opposite of The Wombats' "Lethal Combination" from their new album.

Like, I feel a bit more melancholy from the wild behavior happening in the Bastille song. They are out drinking and partying but they know that deep down they are trying to escape from something. The song is about trying to outrun the next day but knowing it will come and the escape will come to an end and they will be back to reality. And the song is kind of asking why do we do this to ourselves? Where as The Wombats are partying hard and seem to have just made it a lifestyle and getting blind drunk and waking up in the bathtub in your clothes is normal and I don't feel like that relationship is supportive in a good way?

I really like The Wombats album btw, I'm just amused by how both songs seem to almost parallel each other?

And poor Hayley Williams, hiding in the dark, trying to just get through the night so she can go back home...I feel like these are three short stories about the same night with very different POVs.

Or maybe it's just late and I should get to bed and i'm overthinking it all? GOODNIGHT FOLKS!

comments

These two clips are so freakin' adorable I can't even.

The first is a clip of Jimmy Fallon and Lin-Manuel Miranda listening to Weird Al's new Hamilton polka and reacting. Lin's face KILLS ME. He is FANBOYING SO HARD!!!!!!! I mean, can you blame him? Your musical hero singing YOUR MUSIC but in HIS STYLE?

And then to top it off, Weird Al came on the show and they lip synced together and, as Weird Al put it in his Instagram post, "Pure nerd joy".
Well, I've been so caught up in the house stuff and other things, that I have fallen woefully behind on my friends list/reading list/social media. So instead of staying up until 2am trying to skim your posts, I'm just starting from today. Sorry about that. I still haven't found a balance between my new home on DW and keeping up with LJ people who didn't switch over and apparently I've just stopped checking everything because of it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This Friday we're going to see The Aquabats which is a band I wish I had known about sooner because they are just so geeky and fun. Their TV show is on Netflix now and we binge watched the first season and while we were doing that, they announced a tour so we thought WHY NOT? I mean, Weird Al makes an appearance in their show, they are clearly meant for me.

Also this Friday the contractor is coming out to rip up the wood floor in the kitchen and see if they can dry out everything enough to install new floor soon. We're going to go with porcelain tile. We figured for a room with three water sources, tile was better than wood. And really the only downside to porcelain is if you drop something on it, that thing will break. But I'd rather replace a mug than a floor.

Tim got me hooked on Gwent again. I hadn't played since it was in closed beta, but now it is free to play, open beta. I feel like I'm getting the hang of it but we will see how long that lasts LOL. It's like Hearthstone but a little bit more complicated? I still need to finish the first Witcher game. I really like the story, but it's sooooo clunky because it is soooo old. I could just jump into the second game, but I've got to be close to the end now so why give up?

We finished season 1 of The Expanse but Season 2 isn't on Prime yet and OMG THE CLIFF HANGER!!! I'm hoping one of the nearby libraries gets the set soon so I can request it. Or that Prime gets the second season...but I doubt that will happen until Season 3 starts up :(

I'm about halfway through BBC's Victoria because the library DVD finally had no requests on it so I could keep it for longer than 7 days. I'm enjoying it but I think part of that is my fondness for Rufus Sewell. I do like Jenna Coleman, even if I wasn't a huge Clara fan. She is working for me as Victoria.

OH and I finally watched a few episodes of Gravity Falls and I ADORE IT SO MUCH! Why was I not watching this before??

hmmmm...this makes it sound like I've just been watching a lot of TV instead of reading your posts...not entirely true but I suppose not entirely false either. Sorry about that.

Okay, I should probably sleep now...

comments
