Did HIMYM Earn Its Ending? | Idea Channel | PBS Digital Studios (+playlist)

I know some of you are/were HIMYM fans and I thought you might enjoy this examination of the ending. Mike does a very good job of being objective and raises some good points!

I am personally a big fan of shows/ books/whatever that are true to the characters. I was not deeply invested in HIMYM the last few years, and while I did like Barney/Robin I do think that Ted/Robin is a logical and sensical ending because that is just how things go sometimes. I don't believe that fans are owed ANYTHING by media. I see media as something you opt into and can opt out of at any time. You opting in doesn't give you a share in anything- you take what you can get from the showrunners.

Arguably my most fervent "current" fandom is Sherlock, and I find the fandom's insistance that they are owed more episodes or more frequent seasons to be nonsensical. Would I like more sherlock? Yes, but since I'm not footing the bill or dealing with logistics I'll take what I can get when it comes.

But the best part of the entire above episode in my mind? his delivery of the Legend- I'm not going to make you wait for it- dary line.

I've read the Sherlock rants on people's tumblrs and it's like they don't UNDERSTAND how TV is made. I don't mind waiting if it means getting the best team together.

Best example I would point to for those people would be X-Men 3 (or the X-Men movie I pretend never happened). Bryan Singer was off making Superman Returns and instead of waiting, the studio rushed this movie and gave it to another director. And what did we get? SHITE! So, yeah, I will wait for Sherlock and Doctor Who and get quality television vs being forced to churn out 24 episodes for a mediocre season.
