I think the writer is a small filmmaker that caught Peter Jackson's eye awhile back. He had made a short film called "Alive in Joberg" with a very similar plot and Jackson loved it and told him he would give him the money to make it into a feature. The writer/director is from South Africa, so it is easy to see where the idea was born.
