Nope, just historical non-fiction, though I guess I would categorize it as "American Studies" since it's not just a straight up history text. Vowell tends to interject with modern scenarios that have a connection to the events going on and make history come alive.
I'm still miffed I can't find the quote about George Washington having a swearing fit. IT REALLY HAPPENED! Wish that had been in the text books.
But, yes, I highly recommend anything by Sarah Vowell. My personal favorite is "Assassination Vacation", where she talks about American's obsession with murdered presidents, their assassins and their corpses. It's hilarious and informative.
I think far too many of my history teachers were either coaches who needed a full time job or just so pressured to "get through the history" they didn't have time to make it come alive.
