Martian - Buffy connection

I forgot to mention this! I even fangirled a bit when I saw his name on the screen during the final credits because I had no idea - Whedonverse alum Drew Goddard was the writer/executive producer of 'The Martian'! No wonder that movie spoke my language (snark/sarcasm)!

I started the book last night and I am really enjoying it so far. I'm only 30 pages in to the paperback but I really like Mark's voice, really funny. Again, sarcasm. <3

I got the book for Christmas and have just started it. I've enjoyed it so far, but having a hard time making much progress as I tend to fall asleep too quickly.

Yes yes yes! I had the exact same moment last night! I get so excited when I see former Buffyverse writer names in things and my husband is always like, "Who? How do you know these people?"

I started reading the book and stopped. I want to go back to it. I can say already that I think the book's a teeny bit better. I wanted to see that level of detail in the movie. But I still loved the movie! Sarcasm is my spirit animal :)

We read it for book group awhile back, and I thought of it as a modern Robinson Crusoe. If you've ever read Defoe's actual book instead of a children's adaptation, like the one I had growing up, Crusoe spends a lot of time talking about every single thing he does to survive, including the things that don't work. I actually thought Mark might be someone I wouldn't like too much in real life -- in the book; he was more likable (to me) in the movie -- but I teach writing and literature to engineering students and I spent the whole book *and* movie rapt thinking about how he was making the tech and the gardening work to survive.

I might teach it in a summer class, and since it's a five-week intensive I'll probably do the movie. (Alas, films and short stories tend to fly better in summer classes, especially if the students are all working full-time . . . )

Guilty here, I was awful at reading anything that was assigned to me but odds were higher if they were shorter. I'm the same way even now, it's why I can't join book clubs.

I haven't seen the movie yet but I couldn't put the book down. It hooked me completely.
