President Obama Speaks on results of Election "We Are Americans First"

I am going to miss him so much. His eloquence and his voice and his sense of humor.

Reading his speech makes me feel sad and hopeful at the same time. There were so many things said during the campaign to just win votes, things that Trump and the Republicans can't really do, at least not as quickly as they claim. At least the full on apocalypse won't start for at least 6 months, right?

Everyone at work is very quiet. It is a rainy day in Maryland and you can feel the gloom hanging over us. I can't say that I'm not scared; I feel like the kind of people that support Trump probably don't value the public library and the services we offer. Because we help everyone and want to give everyone access to information. I think they would call us socialists.

But anyway, wanted to share. Clearly I am having a hard time focusing on actual work today. And I'm here until 9pm, so I will probably continue to spam you with random thoughts as the day goes on.

I wish it made me hopeful. It almost made me angrier. I wish I could be as graceful and hopeful as Obama and Hillary were in their speeches, but I'm too sad and angry.

You make a really good point about the libraries. I feel his supporters are the types who would rather us not have independent thought. :\

I'm quite sure you're right about libraries, and social services in general, where they're concerned. I forget where I saw it but someone was issuing a call for people to surround the White House in January and not letting the Obamas leave ;)

I am going to miss Obama. He's been a rock even though his "co-workers" fought him every step of the way. They're the people that should be losing their jobs. It's disgusting the way this election went instead.

I hope that point about libraries sticks in the craw of the woman I helped print out a ticket to a Trump rally last month. And everyone else like her. Without us, they don't get to do that shit anymore.

It's important to remember, not just that Trump supporters aren't actually everywhere. It wasn't every state, or even in states that did go red, every county that supported Trump. In this state, where we apportion our electoral college votes instead of making them winner take all, Trump got one but not both. The value of your public library wasn't determined solely by Trump supporters before the election, and it isn't now. While our governor is a big supporter of Trump, the people of this state passed not one or two but five ballot questions he opposed. We might not have stopped Trump from getting elected, but we can still take care of each other and make good choices for ourselves.

I think a lot of what Trump said he just can't do so his voters are going to quickly see that voting him in didn't change the system in the way that he said it would.

That said I think some dark times are coming. Be safe! I just want everyone I know in the US to make it through the next four years!

Most of my community is Trump supporters, but love the library. We're a small town though and the library is very involved in local events so that may help.

And yeah, I couldn't concentrate on work at all the 9th. Mom was surprisingly understanding about my lack of output (though she was upset about the results too, so that probably helped)
