Writer's Block: A Tip About Tipping

[Error: unknown template qotd]

I actually have a little card in my purse that has the approx amount already figured out. I live in fear of tipping poorly. My Dad was a pretty crap tipper back in the day so I keep trying to make up for it!

Plus, I would never want anyones daily pay to be dependant on my ability to do math!!!

also, the Turkey is out of the oven and I've had one glass of Boujolais and I'm a bit tipsy.

Just spent about...20 minutes looking at MySpace profiles with [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy's niece. Good times.

I can smell the food...mmmmMMMMMMM

Move the decimal point one place to the left and double what you get.

My thing about tipping is when is enough enough? Like I always tip waiters, and taxicab drivers. I always tip bartenders, although it's usually a dollar whether it's one drink or two, which probably is cheap (but drinks are so expensive as it is!). But what about all those other places that have tip jars out? I feel guilty overlooking them, but do I have to tip everyone? (what I usually do is drop in whatever change I get back if I'm a regular, and not tip if I'm not unless I feel like getting rid of my change). And what about huge bills? Like a big pizza order- do you give the delivery guy $16 for delivering $80 worth of pizza (I have. But if it's that much pizza, it's usually for an event and thus going on a work or school account, so it's less painful). And hair- oy.. When my haircuts were in the $40 range, I would tip my stylist $10 and leave a few dollars for the shampoo person. But hair expenses have suddenly gone up dramatically for reasons I won't get into here, and I find that if I stick to the 20% rule I end up paying out quite a chunk of change to my stylist, and then I feel cheesy leaving a just few bucks for the shampooer, so I've upped that too. So I guess what I'm asking is, when a bill gets big enough, when, if ever, is it ok to scale down the tip?

$40 for a haircut? My goodness, what do they do to you? I pay the $20-25 range at Hair Cuttery. I was never sure what the hair rule was. I just remember when I was a kid my mom would give me the money and i would run back to the stylist and give it to her. So now I am totally unsure. 20%, you say? I have been over-tipping. But they did cut my hair. Well.

Yeah, I think once I get to a more expensive dining area, I tend to get a bit more exact with my tip. When a waiter/tress spends more time with us even if we're just getting appetizers, I tip generously because they didn't really have to. But for more upscale places where my meal is gonna be a bit more, and therefore their tips will figure to be that much anyway, I tend to work the decimal point (though I hardly ever leave change unless i'm leaving the exact amount for the bill and tip)

You know what's funny? I will never forget, a couple years back, my sister and I went out to Remomo's with Vincent. I was trying to figure out the tip, and then he started talking about how you always take the calculator out, lol. It's possible he may have exaggerated judging by this entry though, lol. Oh Vincent. I miss him, how is he doing these days? Seems like I haven't talked to him in ages.

Oy! I never did that! At least...I don't think I did...no wait, I might have had one of those cheap calculators that comes free with purses sometimes...I didn't want to undertip, I had too many friends that were waitresses and would have killed me if they found out I tipped badly!!!

I should see V-man tomorrow, I will tell him you said Hey! :)
