Mississippi's Confederate Heritage Month proclamation prompts outcry

Seriously, how could they not think this was going to cause issues? They did it to CAUSE issues. What is wrong with the U.S. right now? Why are these states going insane?

All they had to do was create a "Civil War Rememberance" Month or something like that, honor everyone who fought, talk about the issues. No, instead they specifically focus on the Confederates.

**sigh** between this and the anti-LGBT laws that are getting pushed through left and right, I'm starting to be pro-wall, but I'd like that wall built across the Mason-Dixon line.

I...can't. I literally cannot. History is repeating itself right now, and it's like, has nobody learned anything?

just let me out first!

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-05 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Of course!

They're still fighting the war, laboring under the delusion they are going to win. I used to live in the South. Every day I am so grateful that I no longer do.

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-05 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
My friend is from the South and he is the one who always says to me that the Civil War never really ended down there. He just shakes his head at the ignorance. It's just so sad, how can we expect to move forward with so many holding us back?

What the sweet Joan of Ark?!!!

That stuff is just appalling DX

[identity profile] brunettepet.livejournal.com 2016-04-04 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This ridiculousness is getting completely out of hand.

I am grateful I don't live in the South.

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLL DAFUQ?!

[identity profile] domluver.livejournal.com 2016-04-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I second the wall below the Mason-Dixon line, but I need to move back up first.

I just still can't believe people walk around with that fucking flag and stuff.

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-05 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, definitely need to get you away from that crazy. This strange obsession with the Confederate flag is just gross.

[identity profile] domluver.livejournal.com 2016-04-05 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
yes! If I could I would. It does, there's a truck that drives occasionally by my work with a big ass flag flying on the back of their truck it's despicable.

[identity profile] teaandfailure.livejournal.com 2016-04-05 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there was a big ass truck flying it in my neighborhood back during the bullshit when they took it down after the church shootings. I was super embarrassed.

I have considered flying the Union Jack if we're going to play that, but like I told my mom WAAAAAY back in the day when she asked me if I wanted a Bill Clinton sticker for my car, "Are you trying to get my car keyed?"

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-05 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, how come they never worry about people keying their cars??

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts. - Bertrand Russell

[identity profile] teaandfailure.livejournal.com 2016-04-05 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
HA, they never worry about getting their cars keyed because most of the vehicles that would fly that particular flag are already beat-up mud-covered behemoths.

My mom always uses the quote "Avoid zealots, as they are generally humorless." She used to have it taped to her mirror.

I've been bouncing the thought around to move to the south east area of the country. But as of a few weeks ago I'm not so sure that's a thing I would be able to do anymore. Which is a shame. I hate winter.

[identity profile] nienna42.livejournal.com 2016-04-05 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who moved out of the South to get away from this crap, my opinion is that those states have BEEN insane. Especially in the more rural areas (where I was living in TN, for example), racism and homophobia and sexism and xenophobia and Confederate pride and all-around bigotry were generally accepted parts of everyday life. All sorts of horrible bills have been introduced into the TN state legislature in the last 20 years, but they usually didn't quite pass, so they usually didn't make national news. I think there's probably been just enough of a conservative shift in the state governments, possibly coupled with the visible (and disgustingly popular) hatred of Trump's campaign, to allow these things to get officially approved.

I'm starting to be pro-wall, but I'd like that wall built across the Mason-Dixon line.

HA! I could totally get behind the idea of that wall! And of the wall itself...

Why are these states going insane?

Going insane? I'm afraid some of them never stopped being insane to begin with.

[identity profile] 1-rhiannon-1.livejournal.com 2016-04-05 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm stuck on the wrong side of that proposed wall.
Believe me, we're not all asshats like that :(

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-07 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, it's more fun for the media to focus on the crazy...though right now, a lot of that crazy seems to have high political positions. *sigh* I promise that if I build the wall, I will get you onto the other side first!

[identity profile] 1-rhiannon-1.livejournal.com 2016-04-07 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Bless <3 Don't leave me here with these people!

[identity profile] a-phoenixdragon.livejournal.com 2016-04-06 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. This is getting old. I'm in Kentucky, so we have the asshats here. I'm wishing I was somewhere up north right about now. Because being painted with this brush is getting infuriating right now...ugh.

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-07 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know people like you exist down there, trying to make it a better place. It's just too bad the people in power and in the spotlight are such total asshats. :(

[identity profile] night-owl-9.livejournal.com 2016-04-06 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus Christ.

[identity profile] kseenaa.livejournal.com 2016-04-12 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
And in Sweden we look at the US and wonder WTF you are doing... and if you've not read and learned ANYTHING from history??? :-P No offense meant.

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-12 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
None taken! A lot of us in the US look at our own country and think the same thing. We are called the "United States" but sometimes we feel like 2 different countries...or maybe 4. North, South, East, West...I dunno. I think a lot of the problem comes from how BIG we are. Everyone in the world has a different experience, based on where they live, but within our own country, the experiences feel so vast...it's why we have such a hard time seeing eye to eye.

[identity profile] kseenaa.livejournal.com 2016-04-12 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you are on to something there. Which makes it interesting, history and geek wise, that the US is still one country...
