I'm visiting Stardew Valley...

So, this is where I've been spending most of my time the past few days:

That's my new farm, inherited from my late grandfather. I've been learning how to plant crops, cut grass, and mine! OH HOW I LOVE TO MINE! And scavenge. OOH LOOK, A SPICE BERRY!

Seriously though, I'm sorry/not sorry if any of you are friends with me AND [livejournal.com profile] thistle_chaser AND [livejournal.com profile] teaandfailure because it is pretty much all we have been talking about the past few weeks.

Well, I haven't been talking about it as much, but I've been sending lots of Snapchats of quests that amuse me etc. LOL.

It's funny that I was playing The Witcher before this, a game with so much story and shiny graphics (okay, well, not the one I was playing, but I was trying to work my way through them all to get to Witcher 3) and now I'm having way too much fun with this adorable pixelated farming sim to worry about Geralt.

Fun fact: both games have hoes! AY-OOOOOOOOOH!

Sorry sorry, that was inappropriate.

Though there was a fetch quest in Stardew Valley marked as "FOR GIRLS ONLY" and asked me to find a very large cucumber for personal reasons. LOL! I sent a snap of that to Tim and he was like "Wait, WHAT IS THIS GAME RATED?!?" I pointed out that only *our* dirty minds would interpret it that way, a kind might just think they are making a very fancy salad...or something.

Of course, the Mayor is asking me to find his "shorts" now. I don't know why "shorts" is in quotations, but I can't find them, quotations or not! I'm trying to be good and not cheat and peek at the Wiki but I'm so tempted! I mean, his shorts could be ANYWHERE and he wants me to be discreet so I can't walk up to him and be like "HEY MAYOR WHERE DID YOU LAST SEE YOUR SHORTS?" because that would not be so subtle.

I also totally dropped the ball at the big Spring harvest festival. I didn't realize I was supposed to bring something I grew. I showed up and there was a big pot for stew and the game wouldn't let me run back home. So I just sucked it up and dealt with it, the Governor said our soup was lame, and the Mayor was like "WHY SAMMIE WHY!!!!!!!" and now my farmer chick is just sad.

At least she has her dog. And chicken (that it took me about 10 days to figure out how to feed, oops)

So my bro was showing me this the other day and I was trying to figure it out. So it's basically like minecraft? Like you collect resources and build things from it? I LOVE OLD GAMES/OLD LOOKING GAMES. Seriously the newest games with shiny graphics just make me super dizzy and nauseous (sadly because I really love Fallout but after 20 mins and changing settings I'm still like ugh, too much stimulation). BUT THIS LOOKS REALLY FUN. HOW DO I PLAY??

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-10 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It has a little more direction than Minecraft (which I can't play because the lack of story pretty much stalls me and I'm overwhelmed by having ALL THE CHOICES LOL).

You get a farm, you move into town, you grow crops for money, you can explore the local mine, townsfolk send you on quests, there are little special events, random things happen...it's like a very chill game, with no evil creatures trying to kill you (well, there is the local JoJa Mart, a Wal-Mart kind of store that is trying to wipe out the local business...I feel like more will come of this later)

It's on STEAM right now, it's $15 but definitely worth it, you will sink hours and hours into this game, for sure!

[identity profile] skyling.livejournal.com 2016-04-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
This sounds awesome! Okay I'm definitely trying this out. I have the same thoughts about Minecraft. Sometimes too much open world is a bad thing. I'll never be able to play Skyrim. IT'S TOO BIG. But this sounds just up my alley. YAY THANKS!

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2016-04-10 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
The shorts thing is SO FUNNY! I won't spoil anything for you, but I bet you'll be amused once you find where they are...

Glad you're enjoying playing with your hoes! :DDD

SECONDED. WAIT UNTIL YOU FIND THE SHORTS. JUST WAIT.

What a sweet little farm! XD

I just went, "awwwwww, I wanna try!" Then hit up Steam and discover that apparently it's already on my wishlist.

I was a Bad Dog. And now my entire afternoon has been gobbled up. Cannot get the hang of fishing, though.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2016-04-10 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Depending on how you feel about mods/"cheats", there's an addon that makes fishing a lot easier/clearer -- basically turns it into one click to cast, one click to catch. It's a game-changer for me.

I may go that way in the future. Generally it feels a little like giving up to me, so I'll be spending some more time trying to work it out. I kind of like that there's a bit of challenge to it and a catch is not a given, but it just might be a little too difficult for me. It's not very forgiving.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2016-04-10 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm told that when you upgrade your rod, it gets easier. So if you do want to keep trying it, a better rod might give you the balance on effort/catch that works better for you.

[personal profile] angrboda 2016-04-11 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh cool! I'll have to keep an eye out for that, then. Too soon for me to do it now, though. It's not a priority at the moment anyway.

[identity profile] teaandfailure.livejournal.com 2016-04-12 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
It gets MUCH easier once you level up fishing a bit and get a new rod. I'd recommend using crab pots up until you hit around fishing level 3, then get the fiberglass rod and see if you still hate it. I absolutely HATED it the first few times I tried it, and was terrible at it, and now I actually have fun with it. You also get tackle later to put on your rods that makes it easier.

I reached level 5 fishing earlier today, and you're right, it's MUCH easier now. I still can't catch all the fish, but I get most, I think. Quite enjoy fishing now. :)

Hadn't even figured the crab pots out until afterwards, so I stubbornly struggled on with the mini-game. Feel a bit silly now. :p

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-18 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
There are some fish that are just a pain in the butt the first time...like salmon, oh my gosh. Finally caught one! :)

I caught my first halibut the other day, only to discover my inventory was full. I didn't quite understand what the game was trying to get me to do, so I lost the fish. It was only afterwards I realised I had been offered the opportunity to discard something and keep the fish. Oh well.

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-18 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL yeah I am the queen of the full inventory. I bought the upgraded backpack and have two chests + the fridge in my house now. And all of them are getting pretty full!!! At least the food doesn't seem to go bad, ala Sims.

Hm...I need to make a Stardew Valley icon if I'm going to keep ranting about the game like this.

[personal profile] angrboda 2016-04-18 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the same space that I have. The fridge is packed full, but the chests aren't completely. I actually only made the second chest because I hadn't yet figured out that I could store things in the fridge. I love that the game knows what's in your fridge as well as your inventory when cooking, so you don't have to go searching for the ingredients first. I have now made one chest full of random things and the other chest with things to do with farming. Seeds, acorns, fertiliser, that sort of thing. Notoriously bad at actually using fertiliser and such, me.

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-18 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
YES I love that it knows what you already have, nothing like searching for an item for ages.

I've gotten into the habit of making fertilizer because I have SO MUCH SAP in my chests, but then I forget there are other options, like the stuff that speeds up growth, which would have been good for some of the "i need X plant" quests that I've been sitting on.

[personal profile] angrboda 2016-04-18 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I was quite disappointed when I discovered I couldn't fertilise AND treat the soil to hold moisture at the same time. I thought I had it made there. :p

OMG...reading this was a riot!! *CACKLES*

[identity profile] brunettepet.livejournal.com 2016-04-10 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks like addictive fun.

[identity profile] snogged.livejournal.com 2016-04-10 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad you're having fun.

OH MY GOD WHY DOES THIS SOUND SO FAMILIAR?! This strongly reminds me of Harvest Moon, but now that I'm thinking about it... I might actually have this game lmao. I'm dying. I remember going to a festival of some sort and bringing veggies that I grew to put in the stew.

[identity profile] kseenaa.livejournal.com 2016-04-12 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, a game does need a hoe. ;-D *is actually playing one at a yearly LARP*

[identity profile] hermionesparkle.livejournal.com 2016-04-14 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I had downloaded this game but I could not figure out how to play it. I am used to time management games where it tells me what to do. So I just deleted it. It sounds like a hoot though!

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-14 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm, you sure it was the same game? I feel like if you had paid $15 for it, you would be more upset LOL.

[identity profile] doomcookie99.livejournal.com 2016-04-18 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam, how do you get this game? It looks interesting. :-)

[identity profile] orangerful.livejournal.com 2016-04-18 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You can buy it from lots of places (http://stardewvalley.net/stardew-valley-is-now-available/). :)

pI am buying a new laptop soon so I might buy a copy.
