pet peeve of the day

"Feminist" is not a bad word. "Feminism" is not a bad thing. Please do not roll your eyes when you're talking to me about a writer who is also a feminist.

*sigh* I wish I had a catchy comeback for when people go "She's not one of those types of feminists". All I said was "huh". What I should have said was "Oh, you mean the image perpetuated by the male dominated media portraying feminists as only butch lesbians and man haters? One of those kinds of feminists?"

It bothers me when people make comments like that. Especially when they are women, and mothers.

Equality NOW people. It's not embarrassing for you to be asked that you are treated equally and respected.

Sorry, had to vent.

I agree completely.

Recently, one of my friends was talking about the new Super Girl and how he thought it was kind-of ridiculous for women to be upset about the way she was being drawn when they announced her series or "look" or whatever. I was pretty shocked that he couldn't see why people would roll their eyes or complain about yet ANOTHER half-naked female superhero, especially if the storyline was resurrected to get more female readers. *rolls eyes*

On the other hand, I really hate the idea that you can't be a feminist and a stay-at-home mom. To me, feminism is about being able to choose what you want, and if you want to choose to raise a family, then you shouldn't be criticized or accused of setting back the women's movement by half a decade.

OH! And I love your "Ranty Mcranterson" tag. I've been tempted to create a "go cry emo kid" tag for my journal, but realized I didn't want all my emo entries grouped together for everyone (or for me) to read all at once. LOL.

Who says you can't? Where is that written? Again, I think that is the stereotype that was created during the hey-day of the movement to scare average woman from embracing the idea. You call yourself a feminist? Than you must HATE YOUR FAMILY! Not true. You can be a stay at home mom, nothing wrong with that. As long as you are doing it because it was your decision, not because your husband told you to get back in the kitchen and raise his spawn. I just don't roll with the women that say they should stay at home because they don't have any other purpose in life than to breed.

The whole point of equality is that all of us can live the life we want to lead without being told we are less than worthy. A woman can stay home, a man can stay home, a woman can go to work, a man can work and so on.

I'm enjoying the tag as well. [livejournal.com profile] spitefairy complained that I wasn't using it enough, so now I'm being very careful to label my rants. At least she will enjoy it haha.

I agree. However, in my limited experience with mainstream feminism, I haven't encountered any feminist who believes that making a career out of being a mother is feminist. It may have been some radical feminists, or evil evil men (hehe), etc. who started that idea, but the mainstream movement seems to have embraced it--or at least they won't refute it. I think that until they do, women are going to be divided about feminism.

That, and the MSM's focus on the crazy Feminazis doesn't help its image... Really, kids. You can be pro-life, heterosexual, be a "girly-girl," and STILL be a feminist. No combat boots necessary, really, I swear!
