Poor Pillowfort AGAIN. They apparently had an "incident" yesterday with someone spamming child porn/sexually explicit content so they have to quickly update their ToS to be a little clearer on what can and cannot be posted. And now the comments are full of people attempting to justify their child porn/eerily underage porn collection and it is just weird. Or people saying that they are going to be attacked for shipping certain people.

Is that what Tumblr had become? A bunch of people fighting over fandom rather than enjoying it?

And, it's like, do they even READ what they are posting? They are like "oh but there are plenty of teen protags in anime and so much porn about them everywhere else!" yeah, well then go everywhere else if you know you can post your creepy child anime porn artwork there. That is fine. Just not on Pillowfort.

I dunno, I consider myself a pretty liberal person, relatively progressive, but reading people's comments that the Harry Potter characters are 14 in a book and they just HAVE to make artwork of these 14 year olds making out and they MUST be allowed to share it online...then make your own website?

At this point, I'm just really annoyed with the Tumblr people and don't want them on PF if that is how they are going to behave. I know it isn't everyone that uses Tumblr, but wow, it does make it FEEL like everyone, doesn't it?

16: Rant about anything book related

Two trends that I cannot stand right now in publishing:
1. Making books into comic books. Just to cash in. GUESS WHAT - Percy Jackson sold FINE in book form! They made a movie out of it! We don't need THE EXACT SAME STORY told in comic book form. I mean, if it was like the WARRIORS series where the comics were separate stories, I could deal with it, but just taking books and making them comics, with no real style, just an obvious cash-in, blah.

2. "Young Reader Editions" that are the same damn size as the adult book. Look, if you're in middle/high school and want to read 'Unbroken', just read 'Unbroken'. If you're interested in Malala, read her autobiography, not the "sanitized" version that is the "young reader's edition". Either your kid is ready for this, interested in this, or they are not.

The ABSOLUTE WORST is when they make a young reader's edition, a picture book edition and then a comic book. (okay that last one hasn't happened yet, but give it time!)

Anyone else have any book/publishing trends that are pet peeves at the moment?

After sitting and cooling down a bit, I was about to post a redaction of the "this makes me rage" post because of the issue with the quotes being taken out of context in the magazine, the images itself out of context from the magazine, the issue of public shaming etc..

Then my friend pointed out that the clips were from J-14 Magazine and I changed my mind. Because I didn't really care if they were from a magazine for adults, adults who have already made up their minds about feminism so who cares, but the fact that the "I'm not a feminist" quotes were from a magazine targeted towards 14 year old girls makes me upset. Unless there is a page opposite that says "I am a feminist" and has out of context quotes from Emma Watson and Taylor Swift. I mean, maybe this was a full spread on the issues...in J-14...yeah I'm doubting that but MAYBE!

Equal opportunity labeling.
orangerful: (lara pwned bitch // orangerful)
Does anyone else fly into a rage when they see comments like this from female celebrities saying they are not feminists because of [insert reason that makes no sense] here?

Like, to the point that you can't listen to their music or watch them on screen again because it makes you feel a little sick?

And not in a million years would I have guessed that Taylor Swift would be SO smart and well spoken. I'm glad that she is using her power for good. I will be deleting all of these other women from my life and adding more Taylor Swift because she is not just entertaining me but fighting for me too!

As I think everyone on the internet knows, the big news this week was the Star Wars VII casting.

Honestly, I'm having a hard time getting excited about any new Star Wars movies. My expectations are pretty low, thanks to the prequels.

I'm also not excited about seeing "the gang" back together. I love and adore the original trilogy. It was what I grew up watching, every day. I read the Timothy Zahn novels and more so I've already been on adventures with the older group so that desire has long since vanished.

And I've seen enough reunion specials to know that it's usually not a good idea to get the gang back together 30+ years later. I already have an idea in my mind of what old Luke, Han, and Leia look like and it doesn't necessarily jive with how Mark Hamil, Harrison Ford, or Carrie Fisher aged in this galaxy. I'm worried it's going to be Crystal Skull all over again, more embarrassing than enjoyable.

What worries me even more is that Harrison Ford has always been disappointed they didn't bump off Han Solo at the end of Return of the Jedi. And it sounds like this is a one-last-adventure kind of movie and I would not put it past Ford to try to get his death scene in.

I also think the one two punch of Disney/Abrams telling the fandom that they were ignoring the EU, therefore making Mara Jade, Jaina Solo and other female characters no longer part of the story of this world and THEN having the single new female cast member in the line-up was probably unwise. There was going to be outrage anyway, but that bonus was just a bit hurtful. Even if the one female cast member is the lead of the show, it's still very unbalanced. (And also very white and European looking, though I don't feel like I've seen as much outrage about that? What gives? The IMDB page is almost laughable with the entirely white male cast and then the one black guy and one white chick at the very bottoms.).

I'm going to assume the inclusion of Andy Serkis means there will be another 100% CGI character.

Oh, and I trust J.J. Abrams about as far as I can throw him. He lied to me about LOST, he lied to me about Star Trek:Into Darkness -- I just don't trust him.

It's weird, and kind of sad, to not be excited about Star Wars. I still love the original trilogy and Luke, Han, and Leia are my childhood heroes. But I don't think we can recapture that magic again in 2015. Star Wars was a cultural phenomenon, it CHANGED the movies. But these movies will not change anything.

Oh how I would love to be proven wrong.

So, this has been bugging me for awhile. I blame Tumblr. There are way too many SUPER SRS gifs of Harry Potter on tumblr and they annoy me because, and I know this will probably get my burned in effegy, but:

The Harry Potter series is not that great.

I blame the movies for creating the illusion of character growth and development. I want to find a group of people somewhere and use them as a control group because I think that, while the first 3 books are good, the series as a whole is pretty weak. BUT since we started watching the movies before the books were done, and since we got to see the principle cast (Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint) grow from little kids into adults as each film went on, it made us believe that the characters were growing. They were not - the actors were growing and maturing and becoming better at their craft, but really Harry and Co. don't do much in the way of character development for the whole series.

One of the biggest problems is that each book is actually the same and I felt this was made even more obvious with the movies. I can only rewatch the first three in the series because after that the books and movies just get unbearably LONG and DULL because Rowling felt it was necessary to follow the school year pattern in EVERY BOOK. Even if the plot would have moved better without it. Any action and discovery has to wait until the end of the school year because they can't solve the mystery or have a showdown mid-term. This isn't as big of an issue in the first three books because they are short and the stories movie a lot quicker. But I felt like the stories in 4-7 have a lot of moments where Rowling is treading water, trying to just get us to summer time so that Harry can discover the villain and win the day. Again.

(Every HP book/movie: End of summer blues/back to hogwarts yay life is so much better/new random professor introduced, snape looks mad/go to classes for first semester, odd things happen/weird things happen but then it's Xmas so break!/Xmas Break, Harry explores alone, discovers something/Classes resume, Harry tells Ron & Hermione his discovery/talk to Hagrid/QUIDDITCH MATCH/Ignore Dumbledore's advice and/or warning/Exams coming up, panic/Malfoy does something dickish/passed exams/quick solve the mystery/BATTLE!/Dumbledore lecture/back to abusive foster family.)

and then I start to ramble... )

OMG DRAGON*CON SO SOOON!!!!!!!!!

16 days!!!!!!!!!

After searching and failing to find a wig that met my needs, I ordered 3 cans of black hair spray last night plus some purple hair clips in the hopes of being able to pull off Fray hair on D*C. I paid for ground shipping so hopefully they will arrive BEFORE the event. Shipping was more than the damn spray but none of the party city stores near me had it in stock so I figured the $6 shipping was probably equivalent to the amount of gas money that would have been spent driving all over to find spray.

On an unrelated note - tumblr is sort of annoying me. I think the issue is that so many of the tumblr's I follow are fandom related so it's like fandom with no filter of blogging or comments, just statements and they just annoy me. I'm growing tired of Harry Potter/Pottermore posting to the point that, while I was sort of "meh" about HP before, I'm beginning to HATE HP. I know it's not HP's fault, but still...gah, the books were just okay people. The first three were fun and then JK's editor apparently died because after that they get long and ridiculous and that seventh book? Blah.

And the Doctor Who wank?? Jeebus, people do understand that the ACTORS who played the Doctors left because they wanted to go and do other things, they were not forced off at gun point. I'm so frakkin sick of the Rose this Rose that Moffat sucks blah blah blah. Why are you watching if you don't like it??? Gah, like I said, it's because people just post images and statements, it's not like on here when actual thought is put into explaining their problems with the show.

Ummmmmmmm yes I had a couple beers when I got home, played some WoW with [livejournal.com profile] simontrueheart (yes, I'm back on the WoW...it will probably last until the Star Wars MMORPG comes out and who the hell knows when that will be! Even BIOWARE won't say, WTF?)....I think I'm going to put on a DVD now and play in photoshop because I haven't made any graphics in AGES and it's just sad. Need to use that side of my brain...

Why do I even watch the frakkin' Golden Globes? I mean seriously. At least "UP" won.

I hadn't seen very many of the movies nominated but I knew one simple thing - I did not want Avatar to win anything. It's just a special effects movie and not something meant to win a "best picture" award. When they gave Cameron the "Best Director" I was hoping that was it, but then Best Picture? Really? It's only going to encourage the hype machines and hollywood will continue to churn out movies that are based more on FX than actual story/writing/acting etc..

Just...GRRRR!

whatever, at least we know that Ricky Gervais was wrong - apparently you can buy a Golden Globe award if you have a billion dollar box office (btw, that only grossed that much because the damn IMAX tickets are 3x what a normal ticket costs...)

unobtainium....seriously?

*sigh* At least Kristen Bell looked cute in her dress. Sometimes she's hit or miss.

I've also decided the reason that I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt is cool is because my brother looks a lot like him. And my brother is cool. It makes sense. (Hm...I wonder if that's why my brother loves (500) Days of Summer...?)

Paul McCartney came out on stage and I joked that he was my little man whore but then he went and plugged the re-re-release of 'Yellow Submarine' and made my statement true so I LOL'd.

AD and I spent a good portion of the show making boob jokes because you could see a LOT of them.

I don't think I knew Amy Adams was preggers. She's still adorable. She picked a very nice dress to wear too, none of that belly-hanging-out stuff.

Robert Downey Jr. is the man for being such a goof ball. Made for a nice break but once you've been in the business that long, I guess it's probably easy to do.

I need to frakkin start watching GLEE! It's on my Netflix list and the season 1 dvd just came out so I'll have to get that.

after I get Hurt Locker which I want to see sooooooooo bad. The damn trailer gives me goosebumps.

Yay Jeff Bridges. He's the man. Or the dude.

Yeah, I'm going to bed now. Yay for MLK day - I get to sleep in!

So, I woke up this morning and gave the Dollhouse order another go and it worked!!!

Or so I thought.

On my way home from work, I checked my voicemail, and it's my credit card saying their fraud detection has an issue with my card and to call back ASAP.

So I call back and explain that YES I was ordering the DVD this time and YES It should actually have charged the card. Okay, they say, we'll let it go through, but call and confirm with Fox Store.

I call Fox Store and THEY say it was declined and I should try again. So I try again and GUESS WHAT THE SITE SAYS? "This person already has an order in" *headdesk* She says she will forward it on to corporate.

I call my credit card again, juuuuust in case I misunderstood. They explain that after I called, they let the order go through so it should be alright.

So I call Fox Store again, to see if maybe it shows up in the system now as okay. And here is the issue - SINCE the item is a pre-order, Fox Store does a Pre-Auth on the card to check for funds...BUT since this is a special Comic Con thing, they also need to charge my card right then to...so what do the computers at my credit card see? 2 CHARGES in the space of a minute.

She tried to clear my account with Fox Store yet again, to see if I could try again, but no dice. She said she will try to call me back, but she was leaving soon, and to maybe try again in an hour to re-purchase it. She's sent all of my info on to their "corporate" office so hopefully it will get fixed. UGH!

THANK YOU SHANTELL AT FOX STORE'S HELP LINE! YOU WERE AWESOME!

Fox, on the other hand, needs to stop underestimating the power of Whedon fans and prepare for these things. You put a limited quantity of anything online, people will go for it.

I will update you more on the continuing saga of me trying to give Fox money and them refusing (because I know you're on the edge of your seat!)
orangerful: (natalie exclamation // orangerful)
For those of you that don't follow me on Twitter (and for those of you that do, I'm sorry, but while I was watching the site crash, there wasn't much else for me to do but tweet about it) let me tell you about the Dollhouse pre-order.

See, I really had no intention of buying Dollhouse on DVD, let alone Blu-Ray. I was going to see if it survived a second season or not. But then the announcement came out that they were doing a cool exclusive for Comic Con and one of my Star Wars buddies said he would pick it up for me if I managed to order one. So I was like "Cool".

I sat here at my computer, watching the clock count down. I'd never really done anything like this before, except for the Flight of the Conchords tickets (which I waited 10 minutes on and they were all sold out immediately). Eventually it was at 30 seconds, then 20, then 10....then OMG no seconds...then wait...WTF? 10 sec, 30 sec - AAAH! Where is the pre-order button?

I flailed around for about 15 minutes, trying to figure out if I was on the wrong page, checking the Fox Store site, googling like a fool. Eventually I called and was put on hold for at least another 10 minutes and when I finally got to a rep they said that there was a problem with the site, it wasn't actually up yet, and just to wait.

When I checked back it appeared to have a pre-order page, though it was taking awhile to load. I went and typed in all my info but while I was typing, it refreshed the whole page and I had to type it out AGAIN. I hit "ORDER" and it thought about it and said there was an error processing my card. I was like "wtf?" so I tried it again, this time entering my address with the Apt # on the second line. ERROR! WTF! I took a shower, tried again. ERROR. I put away the dishes, took out the trash, tried again - ERROR!

So I gave up, went to the post office, grabbed some lunch, drove home and suddenly my phone starts to ring (current ringtone: A-Ha - Take On Me intro). I answer it and it's the FRAUD DEPARTMENT! "If you purchased $$$ for a fast food rest., press 1" oh yes, I did do that just now "If you purchased $69.99 from 'Misc Merchant'" press 1" UM WTF "If not, press 2" TWO!!!!!!!!

Fraud dept. says I have FIVE instances of $69.99 PENDING on my account from Fox Store. I have absolutely NO emails from Fox Store saying it went through. They should all be gone by tomorrow, I assume.

Now, the Dollhouse site is just a string of text: "We are addressing some glitches that you may be experiencing, will be back up for pre-order soon. "

HA! Looks like everyone else had the same issue. From what I can tell, less than 400 orders were processed before the site crashed.

I really don't think I care anymore. Too much of a headache. If it comes back up and I happen to get one, big whoop. If not, oh well.

It's just ridiculous - this is a MAJOR company, they should have known people were going to jump on this. God FOX, is there anything you don't suck at???? Seriously????

On Campus, Vampires Are Besting the Beats - washingtonpost.com

I don't know how I feel about this article. Yeah, when you're in college you're supposed to be all "experimental" (whatever that means) but I feel the author is just downright snobby! I mean, I'm not a huge fan of the 'Twilight' series by a long-shot, but I wouldn't insult people the way this article does. How about these people want to read for ESCAPE and ENJOYMENT and not suffer through texts that they will be forced to read in class later anyway?

I really have a problem with people that talk like everyone should read the "classics" or they are bad people. Out of context, some of them are damn near unreadable. Others are just depressing. I see enough of the miserable world on the news, why would I want to read a book about it? And as for the more controversial books mentioned...perhaps they are getting their more controversial/political discussion in other formats (TV, the Internet) and when they go to read print books, they choose something a bit lighter. I think it has less to do with their political views and more to do with reading for pleasure (omg what a novel idea! get it-NOVEL!)

PLUS people discover that stuff when they are ready to discover it. I wouldn't have gotten Hunter Thompson's whacked out views when I was 18, heck, he still scares me! I barely had time to read for FUN in college, and when I did I would pick up something random at the library that looked like it would be less technical than the essays Westward Expansion I had to read for my AMST courses....And the comment that 13 year old girls like it is just being harsh. The book was intended for high schoolers - yes 13 year old girls have latched on to it but so have many adults. It's about community and reading what your friends/peers are reading so you can discuss...I just...BLURGH!!!!!!

Lost is just getting ridiculously frustrating. The writing is just ridiculous. At the start of this episode, I thought I saw a glimmer of hope, but no, it was just a cruel cruel joke...

Clearly, I am no longer watching these shows in the right mind-set. I just can't take them seriously because the writing has been so "meh" this season. You can see they have a grand plan for ONE episode, so they spend 3-4 trying to GET to that episode. Next week's better be good!!!!

Just got back from the Sara Bareilles show at the Ramshead Tavern in Annapolis. Her set was fantastic. She played a few new songs, lots of stuff from her album Little Voice, a older song and did a cover of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". She has a great stage presence and lots of banter which made the whole show feel very intimate. Lots of cute little stories about writing songs and a really funny one about going to the Grammys. The entire set was acoustic, so she got to play with the style of each song. Very solid hour of music.

BUT, I gotta complain a little. Ramshead Tavern is a weird venue and I don't really like it. Sadly, they are the only place in Maryland that books performers I like. But the whole set up is awkward. It's a big dining room, and you book seats so if you've only booked two seats, you end up sitting with some random person. And our random person tonight appeared to either be drunk or on drugs or perhaps just a complete freak. Ugh, and I don't want to be mean, but he was FAT. He was HUGE. He was so big that the other couple that was supposed to sit at the table behind him left to go complain that they couldn't fit (and must have gotten a refund or been moved because we never saw them again).

I've also decided that I do not like it when people eat around me, especially when I'm not eating and ESPECIALLY people I do not know at all. Like, I don't mind AD eating, but this guy was like NOMNOMSLURPNOMNACHOSFINGERLICKINGGOODNOMNOM and my stomach was doing flips. Just yeck!

And to top it off, after he spazzed several times during the show, which scared me a bit, he had the nerve to complain after the show that Sara wasn't going to sign autographs (probably because of creepy-ass people like him ruining it for those of us that spaz more quietly). He actually said "I think we've earned it". DUDE, she just played a concert for you! Ugh.

BUT there is no "No Morons" rule for ticket sales so it's just the luck of the draw and sometimes you're stuck with people like that.

So, the short version: Sara Bareilles - YES! Ramshead Tavern - If I have to. Creepy Fat Guy - GO AWAY!

Look, I think it's cool that Universal and Fox have allowed different companies to make some unique Firefly/Serenity merchandise but I have one teensy weensy little request:
CAN YOU PLEASE COMPLETE THE CREW IN AT LEAST ONE FORMAT BEFORE MAKING A NEW ONE!!!!!!!!

I mean, Little Damn Heroes anime Kaylee is adorable and all but I don't want to buy her and have that be it for the set. The PVC figure set with Mal, Jayne, and River was awesome -- how about you make me a Kaylee, Zoe, Wash, Simon, and Book in that size/shape/quality? Or, I dunno, finish the action figure line that came out when Serenity was released! Those toys sold out pretty quickly, you cannot deny that people want them! (the $80 fugly statues do NOT count as part of this line as they are over-priced and not as cool because I cannot play with them)

Who the hell sculpted the Series 2 wave of BSG figures??? They look HORRIBLE! The only one I would want from this set is Starbuck and she just looks so SO awful. I mean, wtf is up with her MOUTH! Ugh UGH! She's my favorite character and they screwed her up!!!!!

I may have to email DST and tell them that this line looks horrible and I would never order a figure that looked that bad and that I hope this is a the pre-pre-preview figure, because if that is the final product, I will pass.

Also - WTF do we need ANOTHER Helo figure for! You haven't even done the whole crew yet and your giving me alternate figures??? And if you're going to make an alternate, how about Apollo with his towel in his flight suit!

Sorry for the wank, but these toy companies drive me crazy! How do they expect a line to get any interest if they only do characters like this?

The Cylon is badass though. I will buy him and have him do my bidding...

Please PLEASE stop making these stupid, "Unrated" editions of perfectly good comedies!!! I just went to go look for a widescreen version of 'Knocked Up' on Amazon to put it on my wishlist, and of course, the "Collector's Edition" is the stupid unrated version.

Ugh, they did this with '40 Year Old Virgin' and 'Anchorman' too. And I like having all the extra features on my DVDs, I enjoy watching them. So I want the DVD that will give me the most extra features for later. But that DVD, it seems, will not actually contain the movie I viewed and enjoyed. It will contain a film that is very similar, but with jokes that were originally CUT inserted back into the show, thus messing up timing/speed/humor etc. -- all the things that make a comedy work.

I was just thinking about this because I lent a friend '40 Year Old Virgin' on DVD. I saw this movie in the theater, loved it, bought the collector's edition (aka Unrated) DVD. Which has nice bonus features but STUPID jokes that were not in the original movie. So now, I'm realizing why she probably didn't think it was as funny as I did - because we did not see the same movie.

And now, this can happen with 'Knocked Up'. And probably the same treatment will be given to 'Superbad' -- Look people, if Disney can make it so I can turn off the extra song on the 'Beauty and the Beast' DVD and watch the movie without it, then you can find a way to let me skip the "new scenes" when I just want to watch the regular movie.

*sigh* Maybe I'll just get the regular Widescreen edition...all I really want is the gag reel and commentary tracks...I supposed I can live without the deleted scenes and general goofiness that I'm sure they will create to fill a second disc.

*sigh* I wish I had a catchy comeback for when people go "She's not one of those types of feminists". All I said was "huh". What I should have said was "Oh, you mean the image perpetuated by the male dominated media portraying feminists as only butch lesbians and man haters? One of those kinds of feminists?"

It bothers me when people make comments like that. Especially when they are women, and mothers.

I had honestly forgot about it. I had a ton of stuff on my DVR, I was working through last season of 'House' (which I'm actually really enjoying!). I watched 'Lost' because we were going over to my parents on the 4th of July and I knew my mom wanted to talk about it.

Why does no one on that show answer questions? NO ONE! They all pull the same crap, they sound like parents of unruly children - "Do this because I said so" "because you're not supposed to" "because it's wrong". No actual explanation, just "do it".
