dress up!

Okay, so I've decided that I really want to dress up as Melaka Fray for Comic Con next year (and possibly Halloween...though no one would know who I was...okay back to Comic Con).

Anyway, the basics of the outfit seems pretty easy to find - cargo pants, tank top, paint on a tattoo and her scar. Build myself a raygun and a slayer scythe...

But her hair. It's 2 different colors - either black/dark blue and a purple/ pink at the end.

So...I don't think it's wise for me to actually dye my hair that many colors. (Probably an expensive dye job too.) So, do any of my costume making buddies have any suggestions for what to do about all that? Suggestions? I am such a n00b at this. But I really want to have a cool costume!

(I googled "Fray" to see if anyone had done it before and I didn't get a million pictures so I might even be sorta unique, which makes me want to do it even more!)

There are a lot of spray on colors that wash out and can be found at any beauty/wig store. If you need a base color, you could do temp dye. The problem with spray on color, is avoiding getting it on your face and fingers. I managed to get bright purple all over my telephone...it rang while I was spraying.

You could also google rainbow wigs.

While I'm otherwise an expert on semi-permanent. hair coloring, I can't say I know anything about temporary dying :( But srsly? Semi-perm is sooo cheap, Special Effects is the way to go for sure, but it'll last a good long while... which... isn't what you're looking for XD

The person above me mentioned spray on dyes which is probably more of what you need. But, alas, I know nothing about them.

Curious: what is your hair color right now? If it's light, then you could just do koolaid, it ends up being pretty "faded", but if you just need it for one night, and do it the day before, it should be fine. But with each washing it fades and fades. But it makes it easy to just re-dye your hair back to what it was (if you dye your hair to begin with, that is) At beauty supplies there's lots of "color-out" packages you can buy individually, you use it like a shampoo and it will get rid of what's left.

But, whatever you do, it's toootally worth the effort. When you cosplay characters, the hair is what makes the costume (in my opinion). And I'm the same way: whatever I dress as for Halloween? No one ever gets/recognizes it XD But it makes it even better, because it's like an inside joke ;P

I'm a dirty blonde, though it's a bit lighter now from driving around in my convertible in the sun. I've only ever had my hair dyed once, which is why I'm such a n00b about this stuff. (and that one dye job was done professionally).

I bought some of the spray on stuff to try to make my hair pink for Tonks on monday. We'll see how that goes. If it works well, they had black and purple at the party store, so I could probably create Mel's hair with that. If it doesn't go well...well I'll post pictures of me freaking out haha.

You're right though, the hair does make the costume! If i can figure all this stuff out by October, maybe I will go as Fray for Halloween. Wonder if I can wear the outfit to work...

I suggest buying a blond wig, and dyeing it. And I think it would be awesome for you to dress up as Fray!

Dyeing wigs has to be done with different marterals than you would use to dye your hair.

Check the cosplay.com forums under the wigs section for more information on this.

I will definitely take a look at that site. I bought some spray on color tonight to play around with for the program on Monday. We'll see how that works out.
