YAY! Girls Like Robots is finally out!!!!!!! I saw this at PAX East 2012's Indie Booth and LOVED it. Been waiting and waiting and FINALLY got an email yesterday saying it was available. So I went to download it immediately and...

I was 3 cents short on my iTunes account. THREE CENTS!

COME ON APPLE! Gimme 3 cents, you know I'm good for it! No, of course, I had to charge 3 cents to my card to get it. *facepalm*.

It was worth it though, played for 40 minute last night and had a lot of fun trying to keep the girls, robots, and nerds happy.

I love that the nerd goes "SQUEE!" when you sit him next to a girl LOL! If you've got 99 cents and an iPhone/iPad, I say get it. :) Support Indie games! (Android is coming soon, they say)

In other geeky news, Her Universe is doing free shipping this month on orders of $50 or more and I'm debating what to get to wear on Halloween since I work that day. I don't think my Dragon*Con corset is really appropriate for the library since it shows a bit of skin, even with the RenFest shirt under it. So I'm debating if I should get the Princess Leia hoodie or the Uhura shirt...or both. I dunno. I want to get the Halloween bag because it is adorbs. (I'd love to get the TARDIS dress but I have a bad feeling it will not fit me since it's Hot Topic Tiny.)

I WILL wear my corset this Sunday when we go to RenFest...need to dive in to my closet and find my undershirt. Won't be historically accurate but it's a start. :) [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat will have to tie me in to the thing as he is the only one who was there when I bought it and knows the trick to it -- what? I was super busy and never did my Dragon*Con post?? YES I FINALLY BOUGHT A CORSET! I tried on a few and I ended up getting the silk one instead of leather. I got it from Ms. Martha's Corset Shoppe. Ms. Martha was there and she tied me in to the get-up. It was like something out of a cartoon, I could feel her tugging and pullng. She asked me "are your boobs where you want them?" I was like "uuuh, I guess" and she said "cuz I can put them anywhere you want" LOL! Yeah. I do like it though, I'm glad I got the solid blue. I had picked out a checkered one but it was not as flattering. And I went with the over-the-bust because the others just didn't look comfortable to me. So, yeah, I have a corset now after years of wanting one. :)

Speaking of D*C, I did not manage to book a room before EVERY HOTEL was booked...but maybe it's a sign to try something new this year. I did manage to get tickets to PAX East, but that's nowhere near as expensive since we crash with [livejournal.com profile] bittertwee while we are up there. It's the hotel fee that gets ya!

YES - FINALLY - I know you have been on the edge of your frakkin SEAT waiting for this post! Now you can read about my super fabulous awesome weekend at Dragon*Con!!!

In bullet point format to keep it from being too TL;DR.

-- I found the billboards on 75 to be the perfect representation of the evolution of a relationship. There are signs for kinky "adult" stores and then two miles down, there is a whole "bring the kids to the peach farm" signs, and also a nice selection of antique store signs. That about covers it haha.

-- Made it to Atlanta safe and sound, gave the car to the valet. While unloading my axe, they accidentally snapped it in two. I almost cried, but [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly packed duct tape and saved the day...and the valet had an accident in the garage and busted [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat's taillight!!!!! ARGH!!!! Luckily, we didn't get the message until later that day so it didn't ruin our Thursday night. Just our Friday morning.

-- Went to the Hard Rock Cafe for dinner on Thursday. When I went with [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly back in 2009, this is where we ate and we found out about the collectible pins. I bought a set and we split them so she has one dragon and I have the other. I wanted to do something similar, but this year I was not just attending with her, but also with [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat. But, as luck would have it, since it was the 25th Anniversary of D*C, they had a special 3-pin boxed set!!! Totally a sign. I bought it and gave two of the pins to my friends -- the set is only complete when we are together!

-- Texting [livejournal.com profile] jellibean as we wandered the floor in the Marriott and being told that she was "near the Dalek" -- I knew I was at Dragon*Con when that text was totally logical.

-- Also, it was SO FRAKKIN AWESOME TO STAY IN THE MARRIOTT!! THANK YOU [livejournal.com profile] jellibean!!!!!!

-- Friday, made a b-line for the Her Universe booth and snagged the Cylon necklace and Yoda t-shirt.

-- Went to the first Buffy panel which included Eliza Dushku, Nicholas Brendan, Mercedes McNab, Felicia Day, Julie Benz, and Clare Kramer. It was a little awkward, they really needed a moderator. Felicia did a good job of trying to keep it moving. Eliza is clearly a sweetheart. Julie Benz and Clare Kramer are adorable and I would be happy just to listen to the two of them babble all day about whatever. Mercedes seemed really shy, Nicholas seemed sort of disinterested. Still, it was fun.

-- Went back to the hotel room later that day and [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly began the process of turning me into FRAY. Phase one, spray painting my hair BLACK. We made quite a mess. [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat documented it for me.

-- Took FRAY to the streets for the Buffy sing-along. Actually had one person identify my character which made me happy. :)

-- Buffy Sing-a-Long was a lot of fun, but I always like singing those songs with a whole crowd of fans. Doctor Horrible was better though, the stage show was tighter and the actors seemed to be more confident. Hilarious thing was the lady sitting next to me. She started chatting with me as they set up the Doctor Horrible show. She was babbling about meeting someone in line and then was like "I'm commemorating this show with some Firefly tea! Do you know what that is?" And I was all innocent and was like "what is it?" and she revealed she was sipping some sort of alcoholic beverage while we were sitting there LOL! Just cracked me up! She did compliment my singing though...so she must have been pretty tipsy ;-)

-- Wandered back to the hotel, going up the escalator we reach the top and I see King Arthur come galloping by, and hearing the faint sound of coconuts being banged together I watched in pure geek joy as he rode by along with Sir Galahad, Patsy, some ladies from Castle Anthrax, and a monk carrying the holy hand grenade.

okay so maybe it's a little tl:dr...still...you know you want to look! )

Fray costume Protecting people from the undead

Went with [livejournal.com profile] andy_wolverton to the Balitmore Comic Con yesterday. It's a little con, pretty much 100% comics fandom but a fun way to spend the day -- and a great place to test run a costume!

I actually wasn't planning on going as Fray because my hairspray estimated delivery date was for this coming Tuesday, but the USPS surprised me and got the box to my desk on Friday! So I came home and did a test spray one one spot of my hair just to see and it took pretty well. So I hastily (perhaps too hastily?) started slashing at my purple tank top to make it look more like Fray's outfit and put the finishing touches on my slayer scythe. When I woke up, I tied my hair back in a ponytail, threw a towel over my shoulders and held a washcloth over my face, then attempted to spray my hair black. Then I tried to stick the purple hair extensions in there and voila - Fray!

(It will be SO much easier to do when I've got [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly and [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat there to find the spots I missed (like the entire back of my head UNDER the ponytail...whoops!)

Considering this is my first costume that didn't just come out of a box, I was really happy with how it turned out and even happier with the response from people at the Con! I mean, people ACTUALLY ASKED TO TAKE PICTURES WITH ME! So crazy, I mean, WOW! The scythe got so many comments, even one from a guy at a booth who said he used to work for Palisades and helped with the official prop replica version. :-D

My favorite moment of the day was stumbling upon Laura Lee Gulledge, an artist from NYC who just published a graphic novel for young adults that I happened to read a few weeks before and LOVED! She was so nice! And she recognized my outfit and asked to take a picture with me!!! And, only a moment afterwards, a lady tapped me on the shoulder wearing her Sunnydale High t-shirt and asked to take a picture with me!!!!

(I went back to Laura Lee's booth and bought an original piece of art by her. This has me thinking that [livejournal.com profile] jackieocean needs to start going to Cons and setting up a table because her art is just as amazing and I think more people need to see it! Maybe we shoudl kidnap her for next year's Dragon*Con...)

I was very good and set a monetary limit on the day since I know I will be spending oodles of $$$ at Dragon*Con in a couple weeks. But I could not resist a Super Girl glass! And, of course, I went and fangirled at Jo Chen because I just ADORE her art style. I had her sign my Buffy hardcover season 1 collection, and I will probably take it with me to D*C and get Georges Jeanty to sign it as well.

So - things I need/have to tweak before Dragon*Con:
- small hoop earrings [livejournal.com profile] simontrueheart said he would let me borrow a pair
- purple/black lipstick
- purple nail polish
- modify my tank top so the shirt is higher up and the sides not so baggy and figure out a way to keep the hole I cut in the front from falling open and showing a bit more than I ever would want to!
- see if [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly would be willing to draw the hazmat tattoo on my arm that I just noticed Fray has!!!
orangerful: (vm o rly? // orangerful)
So I've convinced [livejournal.com profile] andy_wolverton that he has to come with me to Dragon*Con next year so we were brainstorming costume ideas because that is half the fun (plus, I figure if I start planning now I might see some random stuff between now and then and make some costumes). Anyway, here are some outfits I'd like to have for next year:

Wichita from Zombieland ([livejournal.com profile] andy_wolverton said he'll try to get a Talahassee outfit together, [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly you could be Little Rock...or just a zombie LOL!)

River Song from not sure which episode yet. Sort of tempted to pick "Silence in the Library so I have an excuse to buy her Sonic Screwdriver but something tells me I could probably find the camo-suit she wore in 'Flesh & Stone' pretty easily ([livejournal.com profile] andy_wolverton said he would be The Doctor and [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly can perfect her Amy outfit)

Jesse from Toy Story - I don't think this would be too hard to pull off, she's just a cowgirl. Maybe make a wig from some red yarn...

Starbuck - because the outfit is pretty much there already

I'd love to do a Splicer or Little Sister outfit. Seems like they would just require getting a dress from a pawn shop and messing it up a bit. Then making a mask. Maybe there will be more screenshots from BioShock Infinite and I can make someone from that game...

So many ideas!!!! Wish I knew how to sew (or had the patience/attention span to sew). Maybe I could get a really simple pattern and set up the machine in front of the TV...keep my brain occupied.

So, AD & I went to the Shore Leave Convention this weekend. It's a tiny little Con held in Hunt Valley, MD. We had never been before, but this year they had both Katee Sackhoff AND Edward James Olmos on the guest list, so we HAD to make the trip! It's about a 40 minute drive from our apartment and the doors opened at 9am, so we got up pretty early for a Saturday and rolled up there. We managed to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] destertale and a few other friends when we got there so we had some help getting the lay of the land.

We signed up to get photos with Katee. While waiting for our photo op time, we wandered the hall. I had dressed in my BSG outfit (the top I picked up at Dragon*Con, the dog tags AD got my for Christmas, and the pants from Kohls that I've yet to replace). AD decided that I needed to get a sidearm and holster. So we found a vendor with some pretty good prop replicas and I snagged a BSG gun before the shoot (no pun intended).

It was so worth it:

total fangirl moment )

We got to hear both EJO and Katee talk. EJO was very serious at times. I swear every other thing he mentioned was the "most something-or-other in the United States". He did make a great comment about the fans, and how having the Internet to interact with fans took the show to a whole new level because the writers/directors/actors could SEE what we were all thinking about the show and it inspired them. Katee was adorable. I just wanted to snuggle her and her cuteness. She is SO TINY! I had no idea. She talked about her tomboy childhood and how she pretty much needs to have a gun in every role she plays. LOL. We got both of their autographs for the BSG Wall Of Fame in our apartment, then we went back and got our photo-op photos signed for free.

Long day but fun. We also snagged a photo of Jeffery "Michael Weston" Donovan because he looked hot, and I grabbed a photo of Kahlan and Cara from Legend of the Seeker just in case some day I run into them! Plus, they both looked hot and there was a 3 for $15 deal. AD also bought the BSG "Last Supper" photo because it's awesome. And I got a "Sunnydale High School" sticker for the back of my car, which I've wanted for awhile.

And now the full schedule for Comic-Con has been posted. It's going to be a WILD weekend. Just 9 more days now...

Did some work on my True Blood outfit today - by day we can be Merlotte's waitresses, and by night we'll be the vampires that chug Tru Blood at the bar.

Now I understand why all the vamps hang around with their mouths open, it's very awkward.

I just need to practice saying "Hello, this is the library information desk, how can I help you" with less of a lisp and I'll be ready for Halloween!

Click through for more photos of me being silly! (and OMG I applied make-up - I think that took longer than the fangs)

Hm...where can I put my teeth so that the kitties don't find them...

AD thinks he can make me a waitress belt thingy to wear around so I can be in full on waitress mode. Wonder if I could find an image of the True Blood label and make a few bottles to carry around...

And, yes, I literally slapped some make-up on right before I took this picture. Those Merlotte's waitresses usually have it caked on good.

oh noes!

I bought a pair of yoga pants from Victoria's Secret because they were on clearance and Amy told me they were uber-comfortable, so my "Dollhouse" costume is halfway there!

BUT the True Blood "Merlotte's Bar" t-shirt is GONE!!!!!!!! :(

Part of me really wants to get a Star Trek female officer uniform, ala Uhura. Though I think I like the classic style rather than the new J.J. Abrams version. Unfortunately, it looks like I would have to learn how to sew. And the one site that every single place I Google tells me to buy the pattern from is sold out!

I was hoping I could find a "good enough" pattern, you know a McCall's "Space Adventure" thing, that's not quite Star Trek but just close enough for a n00b like me to handle sewing. But alas, I cannot find anything but this one store! It says "back ordered" gives no hint about when they might arrive. (and all the pre-made ones I found were just...yeah, no...plus they only go up to "medium" which means my "not medium" self will have issues).

hm hm hm....

I'M GOING TO DRAGON*CON!!!!!!!!!!

I got my leave approved this afternoon and I just put in a reservation for a hotel room AND bought my membership badge.

OMGOMG SO EXCITED!

Not only will I get to go to this fun convention of geekiness, but I will FINALLY get to meet [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly and [livejournal.com profile] jellibean, two lovely ladies that I've been chatting with via LJ for so many years now.

**SQUEE**

So, now I'm brainstorming low-tech costumes that I could handle with my lack of skillz and my lack of budget. First, I thought of Dr. Saunders & an Active. All we would need is a white lab coat and some scar make-up for Dr. Saunders and for the Active, a tank top and yoga pants. VOILA! Then I just say "I want to be my best" and I'm totally cosplaying like a pro. (and I think Dr. Saunders should carry a clipboard that allows her to keep track of any "Man Reactions" in the area LOL!)

I was also pondering buying a Merlotte's t-shirt and then just wearing black shorts and tennis shoes - I'm a waitress! Maybe we could put little bite marks on our necks and be total fang-bangers haha.

Ah what else...I have 105 days so I could probably track down a Starbuck-esque tank top and have her off duty uniform...that can't be too hard to make, yes?

I still have all the parts to my really lame ESB Luke Skywalker outfit which was just some brown boots, loose khaki pants, green tank top and my Yoda backpack. Oh, and I had my lightsaber but I don't think I'll drag that down to GA.

la la la...yes, I will be spazzing over this between now and September. I apologize in advance.

So, the Harry Potter program last night was a success! Everyone got into it! [livejournal.com profile] heiland_coo and I went all out with our costumes, some brought graduation robes and ties, others just got a swatch of colored hairspray in their hair. Either way, we had fun and the kids were amused!

We had two volunteers outside with the Sorting hat (that I borrowed from Crofton). They kids reached into the hat and pulled out a house name, which was then shouted and cheered by my two volunteers. They got a house badge and went inside the library.

Inside the meeting room, we had lots of different crafts - you could get your face painted, make a snitch, make a broom out of a pencil, decorate Quidditch goggles, build your Hogwarts satchel, make an Owl out of a paper plate and then build a Howler for him to deliver. We had an Herbology lesson in the back with mandrakes and a Defense Against the Dark Arts Pop Quiz matching game on the chalk board.

Out in the branch, we had a scavenger hunt and a 30 question trivia challenge.

Everything went so very very well! Lots of adorable moments (the kids doing the scavenger hunt made my day when I saw them clumped together, reading the clues out loud and then scuttering off to the next clue).

[livejournal.com profile] heiland_coo's husband was there with his camera and I know he took more pictures and I'm hoping she will share them with me! It was such a good time and I'm hoping we can do another Harry Potter themed program next year!

Click on the picture to see a few more shots of my pink hair, the library, and the kids.

Now, what else shall I get for my Tonks outfit...I've noticed a LOT of the images have her wearing 'Weird Sisters' t-shirts. So I think I'm going to go over to Target tomorrow and look for a plain black t-shirt and get some craft puffy paint and create a "tour" shirt.

(if you click through, there is one more picture of me, with a wand, looking silly, you have been warned)

dress up!

Aug. 3rd, 2007 12:19 am
orangerful: (Buffy Comic // orangerful)
Okay, so I've decided that I really want to dress up as Melaka Fray for Comic Con next year (and possibly Halloween...though no one would know who I was...okay back to Comic Con).

Anyway, the basics of the outfit seems pretty easy to find - cargo pants, tank top, paint on a tattoo and her scar. Build myself a raygun and a slayer scythe...

But her hair. It's 2 different colors - either black/dark blue and a purple/ pink at the end.

So...I don't think it's wise for me to actually dye my hair that many colors. (Probably an expensive dye job too.) So, do any of my costume making buddies have any suggestions for what to do about all that? Suggestions? I am such a n00b at this. But I really want to have a cool costume!

(I googled "Fray" to see if anyone had done it before and I didn't get a million pictures so I might even be sorta unique, which makes me want to do it even more!)
