I want to love this show, I really do, but I find it SO beyond frustrating.

I just finished up the first season, and while it has some great moments (like this song) it just lets the main character make the same mistake way too many times for it to be enjoyable. I felt like the second half of the season was much better than the first, when they finally started to move away from the Josh storyline and into her friendships, but then it got weird again as her obsession with Josh once again turned toxic. I had actually given up on the show until I saw that the new season was up on Netflix and thought I would give it another chance while looking for something to watch with breakfast.

But...yeah, I really like all the actors, some of the songs are hilarious and there are ideas about friendship and relationships that I wish they would explore more but I felt like the season 1 finale was a HUGE slide backwards that I really did not want to happen and now I'm trying to decide if I even want to watch Season 2.

Anyone? Thoughts?

I know how you feel... Unfortunately season 2 can be even more frustrating at part but toward the second half of the season gets so much better and the finale is AMAZING! I love Rachel Bloom and I thing the idea of the show it's pretty unique and it makes me laugh that it's on the CW ... I think you should give it a second chance! :D

I've heard that show was very frustrating, and that's why I've been avoiding it.

I absolutely love the show so I feel like I'm biased.

Her friendship with Paula is the most spectacular part of the show and I love some of the themes they explored with that in season 2.

I really like the last few episodes (except for the finale) dealing with Paula and her finding something else to bond over. I might give Season 2 a try to see if there is more of that, but I'm just done with the Josh storyline.

I think this show would have been stronger with a 10 episode run. I do find it unique, I love musicals, and I think Bloom hits upon some really great issues but in a funny, smart way. It's just sometimes the jokes fall flat or they regress her character so they can do a certain scene and it is so frustrating. But at least it is on Netflix so I can binge it and wander off when I get annoyed.

I really loved the song about being the villain of her own story, I felt like that song kind of righted a lot of the mistakes of the first season, making her realize that her quest wasn't noble but selfish and I was ready for her to move on with Greg. Or anyone really. LOL.

I just wish it was better! So much potential and sometimes it just feels like they are floundering. I think it would have been stronger with either a limited run or just a shorter season.

If you think about it it makes sense that she gets back into this Josh thing over and over again... It's like when you have a friend and she/he is in a toxic relationship and you want to help, but no matter what you do she/he doesn't listen... You get so frustrated... That's the same with Rebecca... But to a crazy extreme... As Paula... Paula (which I love) is the real life crazy shipper, that wants to see her ship have an happy ending and does everything in her power and beyond to get them there (like when shippers online send angry tweets to a writer, or go on tumblr and do what they do on tumblr,... but this is all amplified!

I agree, a shorter run would be better for this show (season 2 is shorter) but I think every show that is not a procedural should have a shorter run (sometimes even procedurals actually)... too many fillers... I think the UK with his shows got it right (and Netflix, with its original shows too) rarely go over 12 episodes for season and don't take breaks... You have to wait longer for a new season, but at least you get to see a good show, maybe two at that point and you don't waste any time on fillers!

Hang in there!!! The season finale will worth all your sorrows :D

I love the show - I adore Santino Fontana, so there was never a chance I wasn't going to watch. I'm behind, though - and decided to rewatch season one before going to season two (if only to prolong the inevitable thing I know happens in S2 I don't want to happen). There are so many things about the show I like (the cast, so much of the writing is SO smart and funny, the musical aspects), but there are also so many of the problematic things you mention too.

Er, I'm also watching but only partway through S1 and I think this would be best behind a spoiler cut?

THIS SHOW DRIVES ME CRAZY. I keep watching and then giving up and then watching more and then giving up because I CANNOT with Rebecca.

Like. I am maybe halfway through season one and I can only watch one episode at a time because REBECCA IS THE WORST most of the time. I am SO SO SO uncomfortable with her STILL pursuing Josh despite his relationship because I have weird fidelity feelings and it's GROSS to me that Paula used to be the voice of reason and is now a HUGE enabler.

YES. I binge watched the last half of Season 1 because I just wanted to get it over with, sorta had it on while I was cleaning because focusing on it too much made me angry.

And it was like the writers couldn't decide how they felt either! I mean, it's SO typical to have the girlfriend be "not right for him" so that the other character can feel justified in breaking up the relationship, but then we would have episodes where they did work as a couple and Josh would talk about his love for Valencia and it's like WTF DO YOU WANT US TO FEEL WRITERS?!?!

And, yeah, Paula. That also go really weird and VERY sad with her marital issues and pretty much the only joy in her life being Rebecca's pursuit of Josh? Ech.
