Wow - prior to my last post/link to my website, the last time I had posted to Dreamwidth was May 2021? I can't believe it. I used to live here.

I definitely got caught up in the other social media out there. It's hard to deny the quick photo posts and tiktok videos make for easy engagement, especially when you find a niche group - mine was board game nerds. It's such a small, tight knit group on those sites that it was easy to slip in and become part of the conversation. And, of course, Discord and the real time chat. Twitter was fun...now it's just a hot mess that I peek in on.

And I have been spending a lot of time either playing board games online or on the table. I have a premium account on Board Game Arena and I average about 100 games a month, playing them asynchronously and in real time (I'm playing a real-time game of Castles of Burgundy right now, typing in between turns).

But why did I leave? I think I know why which was...guilt. I was having a hard time keeping up with posts on here. My job has become more time consuming - I was a branch manager at a small library in May 2021 and about two months later, I became the branch manager of the big library I used to work in before that promotion in 2019. And my inbox kept filling up with all of your entries and I could not find the time to read them and then I felt posting knowing that I had not read your entries, but here I was posting my own, asking you to read and respond even though I had not made that time for you.

Anyway, am I back? Maybe? I'm going to make an effort to at least post links here to my other sites and posts. But apologies in advance if I go quiet again. If you're wondering what game I'm playing or book I'm reading, I'm orangerful all over the internet haha. I'm even having fun on TikTok!

I hope you are all well and that 2023 is off to a decent start! I feel like January was a false start so let's just move forward into February!

Challenge #3: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why?

I would love to get coffee with Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. They seem like a hoot. I have adored Kristen since Veronica Mars and I watched every episode of ‘The Good Place’ and I am sad she is not on my TV every week anymore. The two of them are #relationshipgoals and I think it would just be fun to hang out and chat with her about whatever. She has a beautiful way of looking at the world.

Next up, I would to meet up with Rian Johnson in a bar for drinks, because I’d want to loosen his tongue a bit and then get him to explain his vision for the final movie in the sequel trilogy. I’m sure I would have to sign a NDA afterwards, but it would be worth it to just know. I would even pay for the drinks. Something tells me Johnson would just be a fun person to talk to.

Last but not least, I would want to host a HUGE dinner for the Oxtra and Dicebreaker teams. I love watching them interact on streams and even if I was running around filling drinks and serving food and didn’t get to talk, I would love to just listen to them all laughing and talking. Maybe we could even find time for a game together! They are all so down to Earth, I just feel like listening to their opinions on life, the universe and everything would make for a lovely evening.

Oddly enough, I’m struggling to think of an fictional characters I want to hang out with right now. The only one that comes to mind is I would want to get a burger of the day at Bob’s Burgers. But I would sit in a booth and just observe the shenanigans LOL.

Star Wars and The Beatles. It’s weird to lump these two together. To an outsider, they have very little in common, apart from being major forces in shaping popular culture forever. But you probably wouldn’t think of the two in the same moment unless you were taking part in some kind of quiz show.

But for me, they are two of the BIGGEST obsessions I ever had in my youth. I memorized actor’s names in Star Wars and I knew the stories behind every Beatles song. And every time I think I’m done with them, that maybe I’m over them. They PULL ME BACK IN!

Case in point, this “not a trailer” released by Disney and Peter Jackson two weeks ago (that I am just seeing now??):

At first I was like “Huh, okay, Beatles thing, I guess I will watch this, it’s only 5 minutes.”

But then the images of the four of them, so clear, in color…the audio as clean as if it was recorded today…I could feel my heart swell and the 13 year old fangirl inside me began to jump up and down and slowly freak out with every new sequence – every snarky comment from John, every smile from Paul, George’s quiet presence (yet somehow judging us all) and Ringo’s antics.

If all 56 hours were remastered, I would watch all 56 hours so it is probably for the best that Jackson is going through and editing this down to a more reasonable amount of time.

It was the same feeling I had when the ‘Force Awakens’ trailer dropped. The cynic in me sat down to watch, but when it ended, I was fully on board with it. I will probably listen to The Beatles in my car tomorrow and hang on to that energy that they bring me.

I have a bootleg copy of ‘Let It Be’, the 1969 film that most of this footage originated from. I watched it once and I don’t think I can ever watch it again. It was painful to see these four friendships crumble under the pressure of the past ten years. So what did Jackson find in that “lost” footage that compelled them to create this new documentary? Will he manage to craft a happier story? Or at least a more realistic picture of what was going on inside and outside the studio at the time?

Does the world need another Beatles documentary? Probably not. Am I going to enjoy this and get emotional about four men I have never met? Without a doubt.

Jackson – don’t let me down.

In an effort to use this blog more, I'm going to participate in the annual 'Snowflake Challenge' so I post on a regular basis. Hopefully, eventually, I will just make some time for blogging and enjoy the process of getting some of the thoughts constantly rolling around in my head committed to the digital page.

Enter, the Snowflake Challenge (details here)

Challenge #1 In your own space, introduce yourself!

I'm orangerful aka Sam. Librarian by day, nerd 24/7.

If I listed every fandom/obsession I have, we would be here all day, so let's just hit the big ones that will probably give you a pretty well rounded view of who I am:

Happy New Year! It's 2021 - let's do better this year!
orangerful: (Default)
I haven't done a real post in awhile! I've been trying to get back into the work groove and it has not been easy. But everything will change on Monday when we open the doors to the patrons. Ugh.

ANYWAY - here is June in 30 seconds :)

orangerful: (Default)
First week of work went really well. It is hard wearing the mask all day but we all found time to kind of sneak away and breath. We're a small group so it wasn't too hard to social distance and we were all wearing masks so even if we did get a bit closer than we should have, we weren't breathing on each other.

The good news is that we are not opening to the public until July 6th (initially it was June 15). We are starting curbside and phone service tomorrow. Curbside is a BRAND NEW service so we have no idea what to expect from our patrons. We have SO MANY BOOKS on the hold shelf right now, hopefully they do not all show up tomorrow LOL.

The world is on fire and I have swung back and forth all week, looking at the news, then hiding from it. I've donated money to several organizations and I can't really think of what else to do besides social media support, emailing representatives etc. I am not brave enough to go to a protest. Just looking at the images of all the people gives me anxiety and you all know I dealt with crowds at PAX and what not. But I will try my best to be better, do better.

So, yeah, still playing Animal Crossing every day for a moment of mindless fun. My crokinole board arrived last week also and I LOVE it. I wish Tim liked it LOL. He just doesn't like games he can't win? I still love him though...I guess. :P Sylvia played with me and she enjoyed it. I'm thinking about visiting my parents, maybe wearing our masks and playing outside, if it is a nice day. That would probably be safest.

I'm wondering if I could visit them before July 6th. We've been pretty safe, and I feel like my staff has also been following the rules so I doubt any of us have the virus. But once we start working with patrons, all bets will be off. So maybe...I dunno. It's a thing in my brain.

I also did a bit of retail therapy and ordered some tabletop games from a local store to support them. And I had a coupon for an online store so I ordered some more miniatures to paint. Of course no one will play with me right now but whatever. I also backed a few games on Kickstarter because I HAVE A PROBLEM! But those won't show up any time soon.

Okay, need to get to bed and read for a bit. I started Accused! The Trials of the Scottsboro Boys: Lies, Prejudice and the Fourteenth amendment because I had it in my pile at work and this felt like the right time. The saddest part is, if I tweeted the headlines in this book, you wouldn't be able to tell they were from 1931...you'd think they were from yesterday. And people don't believe there is a problem.

Everyone stay safe, stay healthy, and support change. We won't fix things by tomorrow, but we can get things moving in the right direction.
orangerful: (donuts)
Well, if this whole pandemic has taught (or retaught?) me anything, it is that I am a creature of habit to the nth degree.

There was a reason that I had perfect attendance all through elementary, middle and high school. There was a reason I never get any better at my instrument.
There was a reason I went to every single class, lecture and lab in college.

If I’m not in a work environment, I am awful at doing work.

I am the kind of person that keeps their home life and work life as separate as I can. I mean, yes, most of my friends are from work, but I never bring work home with me and I rarely let it bleed into my every day life. I’m lucky like that, it is what attracted me to my job. I work 9-5 (and once a week 1-9) and then I am done. When I go on vacation, I will look at my work email and scan it for any emergencies (now that I’m a manager) but my staff knows to text me if there is something urgent because otherwise I am not working when I’m off.

So being at home and trying to work from home has been a challenge. Especially since when the library first shut down, we were just stuck in a holding pattern, with very little we needed to do apart from updating the signage when our closing dates were extended. And now that the date is finally feeling tangible, I’m starting to panic? Because I know there are things I need to do and get done and suddenly it feels like I need to get everything done right now even though I have a month but the way April flew by, a month seems like nothing.

When I’m at work, I am more self-motivated but apparently at home, I have little to no motivation because I have programmed myself to feel like being at home means time to relax. And I really don’t want to throw that off?

I may attempt to create some kind of schedule for next week, force myself to get up, do work. Because here is the thing, I think I am most productive from 9am-11am when I’m at work but when I am at home and have nowhere to be, I naturally sleep until 10:30am so therefore, though I feel well rested, I have missed my productive hours and tend to not want to do anything. (normal workday usually has me in my office from 9-1, eating lunch from 1-2, and then usually working on the desk or mingling with staff from 2-5 so you can see how my internal clock is set up already).

Anyway, how are you all holding up? Hope you’ve had better luck finding your work-from-home groove. Or, at the very least, reading this post makes you feel less alone in your struggle. ❤

I leave you with the tweet that inspired this introspective post:

You know, some people might not like their Mom to follow them on Twitter but it comes in handy when you have a crap memory and there is some kind of cute meme going around. Today the question on Twitter was "What was the first movie you cried at?" so I retweeted @ my Mom and got this this answer:

you're welcome.
orangerful: (Default)
(this is going around twitter and I wracked my brain to think of something so I'm posting it here too dangit!)

- my undergrad is in American Studies

- I interned/worked as an "on air personality" at a local radio station at the end of college

- I write with my left hand but my right hand is dominant in everything else. Teachers would give me left handed scissors in school and it was rough because I would put them in my right hand!

- I've been blogging in some form or another for 18 years. You can read my current rambles at http://orangerful.com (shameless self promotion is a skill)

- Two of my college professors thank me in their books (wish I could remember what brilliant things I said to them!) <-- I was running out of things to put so I got bored and Googled my name and found this out LOL
orangerful: (donuts)
Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] meathiel and [livejournal.com profile] doomdays, here is my One Second Every Day for the month of December.

Kinda sorta already dropped the ball on January LOL so I will try again in February!
orangerful: (Default)
I know I am an adult and I have my own money and I can buy what I want, whenever I want (I mean, within reason) but there is is still this part of me that was so well trained as a child...

...you see, around this time of year, maybe even the start of November, my Mom would not let me get any new toys or games or movies. From November onward, it was time for Christmas prep so I couldn't get anything because Santa/Mom/Grandparents etc. needed to have a list of things to pick from.

So even now, I just can't bring myself to buy anything for myself. If I do, I tend to feel really guilty, like I'm taking a chance that someone else might buy it for me.

Which is silly because I don't have a lot of people buying me gifts anymore so I'm just setting myself up for disappointment and binge shopping on December 26.

And, the flip side, is that when Tim buys himself something around this time of year, I get a little annoyed because it is one less thing I could have bought him for a gift.

Anyone else like this?
orangerful: (weeee)
My goodness this is a LONG list of questions LOL. But we are all having fun, right? I feel like we've had some great conversations with this meme. Booknerds are awesome.

21. Have you ever read a book series because you were pressured? requested by [livejournal.com profile] ragnarok_08
A whole series? I don't think so. I've had books suggested to me and tried them, but I can't think of any that I read because I felt pressured to. (the thing is I know I am guilty of pressuring people into reading books LOL)

23. Who is your favourite author of all time? requested by [livejournal.com profile] chocolate_frapp
SO HARD TO PICK ONE! My default answer has been Douglas Adams and Michael Crichton for a long time, but I feel like I should probably mention Jeff Lemire now as I have read almost everything he has done (there are a couple brand new books I haven't picked up yet). OH! And A.S. King. Yeah, she is on the list now for sure. Even if her last few books were just so damn surreal I could barely understand them.

24. How many bookshelves do you own? requested by [livejournal.com profile] rogueslayer452
Oddly enough, not very many and most are filled with action figures. There's the star wars shelves, the whedon shelves, the movie shelves, and then the shelf in the guest room that actually does have books on it. We have a bookshelf in our bedroom too though that is mostly Tim's books. I'm a librarian, so I rarely buy books until I feel the need to collect them for fandom reasons. So what was that? 4? 5? Yeah, not an impressive number.

26. What is your favourite non-fiction book? requested by [livejournal.com profile] brunettepet
ANOTHER HARD ONE! OMG! To pick just one!!! I will say that Stephen King's On Writing is a book I refer back to a lot. Part autobiography and part how-to, King is honest and to the point. I listened to the audio too and he reads it so it was like driving around with him in my passenger seat, listening to him ramble about writing.

BUT right now I would pick The Faithful Spy by John Hendrix, a beautifully illustrated book about Deitrich Bonhoeffer and the plot to assassinate Hitler.

27. What is your favourite children’s/middle-grade book? requested by [livejournal.com profile] teragramm
AAAAAAAAAH ANOTHER DIFFICULT ONE! I read a lot of middle grade fiction for fun so I have SO MANY to point to. I already mentioned 'Gregor', I LOVE the 'Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales' series. I was really impressed by Adam Gidwitz's 'The Inquisitor's Tale'. That book did NOT talk down to kids and covered some heavy topics but somehow managed to stay engaging and fun. And apparently if I had listened to the audio book, they got some medieval band to sing one of the songs that plays at the tavern.

32. What was the most expensive book you bought? requested by [personal profile] graveexcitement
This is tricky because the most expensive book I *own* I got as a present. This would be a book of all the songs The Beatles ever performed, transcribed into sheet music, every single part. I think it might have retailed for at least $100 when it came out and when I got it. But my parents got it for me as birthday present.

So personally...hm...probably one of my Buffy academia books because those are small presses and not cheap.

33. What is a book you read after seeing the movie/TV series? requested by [livejournal.com profile] rogueslayer452
SO MANY! Right now, I'm slowly reading THE EXPANSE book series. I actually don't want to catch up to the show because I'm enjoying watching it all unfold. I'm really impressed by how close the show and the books follow each other. Makes sense because I know the authors are heavily involved.

The worst was JAWS. That book is AWFUL! DO NOT READ! Throw it into the ocean and watch the movie. BLAH!

35. What three books are you most looking forward to reading this year? requested by [livejournal.com profile] meathiel
THE TOLL - book 3 in The Arc of the Scythe series by Neal Shusterman. NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!
Major Impossible - Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales #9 by Nathan Hale DECEMBER!!!!
Network Effect - Murderbot Diaries #5 - this one isn't out until 2020.

36. What is a book you love that has a terrible trope? (Love triangle, etc) requested by [livejournal.com profile] ragnarok_08
Probably most YA books LOL. I LOVE the Unwind series, but there is definitely some love triangle/teen angst tropes in there. Same with Scythe. But not enough to distract from the action.

37. Have you read a book in a different language? What was it? requested by [livejournal.com profile] doomdays
Estamos en un libro/We are in a book - (Elefante y Gordita/Elephant and Piggie) by Mo Willems. It's an easy reader book so about my level. I did a Spanish/English storytime at the library.

40. What is the weirdest book you have read? requested by [livejournal.com profile] qwentoozla
(I have six pages of books tagged as "weird" on my GoodReads)
The Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer was so very strange, I'm not sure I would have made it through if I hadn't seen the movie and just wanted to know more.
Demon by Jason Shiga is weird and WRONG.
Landscape with Invisible Hand by M.T. Anderson was so strange I couldn't figure out how to booktalk it.
Anything by A.S. King is weird in that magical realism kind of way. Strange things happen but they could just be tricks of the mind or metaphors or something. I don't even know sometimes.

43. What book did you buy because of its cover? requested by [livejournal.com profile] teragramm and [livejournal.com profile] rogueslayer452
I don't buy books BUT I do check out a LOT of books because they have cool covers. Most recently, I picked up 'Wilder Girls' off the return cart because look at this:

It's sitting on my desk at work now. Someday I might even read it!

I can barely read the books I check out from the library, buying books would be futile because they have no due date so why would I ever actually read them?

45. Do you own a poetry anthology? What is your favourite poem from it? requested by [livejournal.com profile] meathiel
My copy of Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends" is still at my parents' house. The two poems I remember from it as favorites is the one about if they make you wash the dishes, drop some of the floor so no one asks you to wash the dishes anymore. And another one about Captain Hook remembering to not pick his nose. HIGH ART PEOPLE!

As an aside, I really enjoy YA books written in verse. Solo by Alexander Kwame is REALLY GOOD.

47. Do you own any historical fiction? requested by [personal profile] author_by_night
I'm sure I do. I must! ...wait, do I? I'm trying to think of some historical fiction I have read recently but it was all from the library.

50. What book got you into reading? requested by [livejournal.com profile] doomdays
I'm going to say Jurassic Park is the one that brought me back to reading. I read as a kid but then all the damn books with dead dogs and dead children turned me off of reading for fun **glares at Bridge to Terabithia** But I was really excited about the Jurassic Park movie and my Mom made a comment that was sort of like "Books are always better than the movies" so I got the book and read it. Then I listened to it. Then I saw the movie. Then I made my aunt read the book with me. Then I put the audio on in the car and made my parents listen to it. And then I read all the other Michael Crichton books I could LOL.

Second place goes to Douglas Adams because I had about given up on reading in Middle School when I found HHGTTG in the basement while working on homework. (I've told that story many times though)

AND THAT IS THE END! HUZZAH! Thanks for playing! And thanks for reading!

1. What was your favorite childhood vacation?
I have a horrible memory but I think I'd have to go with my trip with my Aunt and Grandma to Disney. It was just a "Girls Only" trip. I remember riding the "Tower of Terror" with my grandma because when your GRANDMA is okay with the scary ride, how can you not be?

I also remember a group of youths running through the park and bumping into my grandma, knocking her down. Disney scooped her up pretty quick and whisked her to their medical station, backstage. Her head was bleeding pretty bad and the doctor was telling her she needed stitches. My grandma grumbled about it and my Aunt said "I can see your skull! You want me to reach in there and knock on it!" and then she relented to a trip to the local hospital.

And then I was SWORN TO SECRECY when we called to check in with my parents and grandpa that night. Don't mention the stitches or they will freak out LOL. I'm sure they found out after we got back, though I don't remember the reveal.

2. What is your dream vacation?
Right now, at this moment, a trip to Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. I watched all the coverage last week and I am dying to visit. I know I should wait though - only 1 of the 2 rides are even open! - but I can't wait to experience it. I feel like I will probably cry. I'm not a huge Harry Potter fan but that park was overwhelming in its awesomeness so I feel like with my Star Wars fandom level as high as it is, I might cry.

3. If you could take a trip around the world, what locations would you be sure to include?
JAPAN, then I want to go back to Australia, for sure. New Zealand for some Lord of the Rings sightseeing, I'd take Tim back to Alaska because he spent his younger years there, I'd love to visit Spain and France, Italy, and it might be cool to pop in to Ireland and Lithuania for family roots reasons. If Russia wasn't such a mess, I would go there. I'm pretty open to going places, if it is safe. That is the biggest thing for me. I'd feel weird going to countries where people's lives are in turmoil and showing up as a tourist.

4. Do you prefer vacations to new destinations, to familiar destinations, or a mix?
A mix. I like to go exploring and I don't mind going to someplace I have been before but have not full explored. Or someplace like Universal or Disney parks because the magic just takes me over.

5. What activities would you plan for a two week staycation?
Mostly probably video games. LOL. I don't think I could do a two week staycation, that's a LONG TIME to stay at home. Maybe 1 week of being a homebody and then a week of daily excursions to local attractions like state and national parks. That is one of the things I love about Maryland - there's parks and historical sites just lying around.

It’s still a selfie if you can’t see my whole face, right? Twas my day off and I used the time to recharge mentally after yesterday’s full on drain. Played lots of video games and just chilled. Wanted to show off my P!atd shirt too! That’s my desk behind me, Leia says hi.

I picked up Horizon: Zero Dawn which, according to my most recent save file, I had not played since September of 2018. Oops. To be fair, the game made me mad. It is open world and I wandered into a zone and triggered a quest I was not prepared for yet. And I hadn't saved in awhile or something and I didn't want to go back at the time because I knew how much progress I had made. But after almost a year collecting dust on my shelf, I had forgotten pretty much everything, so rolling it back to a save that was the day before that last one wasn't as cringe inducing. And OMG I realized I had a bunch of really early quests I hadn't bothered to do that had equipment rewards/training and yeah...oops!

I was bad today and bought some stuff from Torrid...I mean, it was 40% off + another 5% because they own my soul I have their credit card so I got a deal! I bought Star Wars shorts. I couldn't resist!!! I've got Star Wars on the brain with every damn nerd site I follow going to Galaxy's Edge last week. And now OutsideXbox is back there AGAIN today because they are in California for E3 and the whole gang is there and they were Instagramming it all afternoon. JUST TORTURE! I'm thinking maybe we can go in 2021. By then, all the rides should be open and running. And they should have the whole line system worked out. Apparently you make an appointment for when you get to go into Galaxy's Edge so only a certain number of people are in there at a given time. And you have color coded wrist bands so that the park people can easily tell how much time you have left and let you know if you can or cannot do something.

Oh, and my Dad officially retired today! 25 years as a federal employee (and he had retired from the Navy before that so he has served his country well, yeah?) Anyway, my Mom said my Dad was home by 10:45 am and she emailed me around noon saying he had called her 3 times already. LOL. It's a good thing she is retiring too, though not for a few more weeks.

Anywayz, need to get to bed. Workin' tomorrow. Hoping it is chill, the weather is kind of blah - hot and cloudy, storms are lurking. TTFN
