From [community profile] thefridayfive:

1. Have you ever made corned beef and cabbage?
I usually skip the cabbage. I've never done it the traditional way, I tend to throw it in the slow cooker with some potatoes (this is happening right now actually). I LOVE corned beef, but I'm also a very "salty" person, where husband is on the "sweet" side of things so he is not as much into the cured meats. Probably best for my blood pressure to only eat it once a year.

2. Will you be tipping back a decent pint of Guinness this weekend?
No, thank you. I may have Irish roots but I'm not a Guinness fan. I always say I prefer beer I don't have to chew. But I've got plenty of other adult beverages in the fridge. I'd rather have an Irish Coffee to finish off my day.

3. Do you own an Irish wool sweater?
I do not...which kind of surprises me but I'm betting they are not machine washable and I don't buy anything that is not machine washable. Though if I DID go to Ireland, I'd probably be tempted to buy one just because I'd know it was authentic.

4. Have you ever ‘met’ the Tart with a cart (i.e. have you been to Dublin)?
NOT YET! It's on my list. I figure hopping over to Ireland would be one of the easier destination vacations since people speak English so it is high up on my to-go list.

5. Do you know what tractors, submarines and ejector seat all have in common?
I'm tempted to Google this, but I will be honest and just say NOPE!

[personal profile] trepkos asked "If you could only listen to five bands for the rest of your life, who would they be?"

I don't think this question was as hard to figure out as I thought it was going to be! While I enjoy listening to Spotify and finding new music, I definitely have a lot of go-to artists for days when I just need a certain something. My personal tastes lean towards bands that I can sing along with. I'm all about singer/songwriter and lean pretty heavy on the indie/folk/alternative styles.

So, here are my top 5:

5. "Weird Al" Yankovic

I've been listening to "Weird Al" since I was a kid and he always makes me laugh. If I'm going to be limited to 5 musical experiences, then having "Weird Al" in the mix guarantees I get laughs and also a wide range of musical genres. Because I wouldn't want to live the rest of my life without the occasional accordion solo during a polka based on overplayed top 40 hits.

4. Sting

I had a habit of stealing my Mom's music and Sting was definitely her guy first. But it is hard to deny his talent and ability to write catchy songs with smart lyrics. Always lots of good allusions in Sting songs. I could probably survive just on Ten Summoner's Tales for awhile, that whole album is perfect. Love songs, story songs and everything in between. If you have never heard it, hop over to Spotify now and make sure you listen past the "singles" tracks and get to those deeper cuts - the one about the seven brothers that save the town, the other about the nerdy guy trying to best the muscle-bound suitor, and the kinda creepy 'St. Augustine in Hell'.

3. Bastille

Another band that both my Mom and I like, though I think I found them first! Maybe? At any rate, we found them on our own and then both realized we liked them. Even saw them in concert!

It only makes sense that I would be a fan after being raised on music like Sting's. Bastille's lyrics tend to tell stories and also are full of references to other works, everything from 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' to 'Twin Peaks'. And I feel like they do work with an ALBUM mindset, which I also appreciate from bands nowadays. We are so used to streaming singles and thus a lot of groups just make albums of singles, but I feel like both 'Bad Blood' and 'Wild World' have a flow to the songs when you listen to them from start to finish. With only TWO albums out and neither of them new, Bastille was still my top band of 2018, so clearly I like going back to them when I need to rock out.

2. Paramore

Another band that I keep going back to. Hayley Williams' voice is so unique. And I love how they keep trying to grow and change with each album. If you listen to their very early stuff and then to the newest songs, you can see that they are progressing as musicians and writers. It's a scary thing for a band to do but it gives them a lasting power that I don't think a lot of their peers will have. The latest album, After Laughter, had this fun retro vibe, with hints of the 80s and 90s music that I'm sure they listened to while growing up, but it was still Paramore through and through. And, again, the stories in the songs keep maturing too. Hayley even pointed this out at the last concert we went to, prefacing 'Misery Business' by saying that it really isn't a healthy attitude and she has grown as a person since then...but damn it is fun to sing along.

AND NOW, MY NUMBER ONE CHOICE
----- !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DRUM ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!! ---------

1. The Beatles

I fell in love with The Beatles back in Middle School and it is a love that lasts forever. In fact, I just had them on this morning because I needed something to start the day off right. There is a Beatles album for every mood, every time of day. They are always there for me. They were my first music based fandom. I don't think I've ever hit the same level of obsession as I did with them for any other band. I learned so much about life, love and music from these four lads from Liverpool. If you told me I could only listen to one band for the rest of my life, I'd have all of their albums in my arms before you could finish the sentence.

YOUR TURN! What are your top 5 bands/artists?

[livejournal.com profile] elizalavelle asked: Where would you love to travel if money and time weren't a factor?

Short answer: EVERYWHERE!

I do love to travel, I love to explore. I've never been one to take a vacation and sit still. If I'm going to sit still, I stay home and do that. But if I'm going away, I want to get out and do things. I want it to be an adventure!

I think a lot of it comes from being a Navy brat when I was little and moving place to place never bothered me. And my family never lived close so we were always taking car trips, so long plane rides don't feel so bad, especially when I'm excited about the destination.

That being said, if someone showed up with a transporter and said I could go anywhere I wanted and stay as long as I wanted (because they would cover the costs), I would definitely take a trip back to Australia.

When I was 17, I went with a travel group called "People to People" that took high schoolers with good grades on trips around the world. We stayed for 18 days and I love it. But it was a tour group, I was a kid, so it was all very pre-planned. I would LOVE to go back now and just explore on my own.

(just looked through my Flickr and of course I don't have scans of my Australia photos...I really need to just take a day off and sit and scan EVERYTHING I have for backup)

HA! Wait, I knew I had a newspaper clipping:
Untitled

Second place goes to Japan. I've always wanted to go there. I always joke that it will be the closest I could get to visiting another planet. I just know it will all be so different, even the things that will seem familiar with all a Japanese flair to them.

Right now, I'm living vicariously through [livejournal.com profile] twissie's journal. BUT it sounds like my brother will be heading West as part of his first assignment with the Navy. I want to save up and try to get out there while he is stationed there, which I think gives me three years. Looking at airplane tickets, I'm hoping that will be enough time to save up LOL.

What about you? Where would you go if there were no limits?

If you were wondering - Today is the day! Thank you all for the lovely birthday wishes!

birthday

FYI, the Google Photo Scan app...not as great as I was hoping. I think I'll just bite the bullet and scan them the old fashioned way. But I was too lazy tonight so you get this weird photo that looks like it was run through too many filters of me contemplating getting older and what looks to be maybe 8 years old? (I can't see all the candles and the photo is stuck down in the old album and I'm scared to peel it off).

I had a wonderful day. I always take my birthday off because it is the holiday of me. Yes, I am the center of attention today. At least, for myself, if that makes sense. I tend to "treat myself" for all of March because we should all celebrate our birthday all month long.

I slept until a little after 9am, rolled out of bed and had a cup of hot chocolate and then Tim appeared behind me with a card and a bag of goodies.

He got me two video games - Dishonored 2, which I have wanted to play since it came out but it kept getting bumped down my list, and Monster Boy for Switch, which is brand new was the biggest surprise!!

He also bought me HOTPOP microwave popcorn popper but unfortunately, our microwave gave up on it's mechanical little life on Friday so now we need to buy a new microwave so I can use my new popcorn popper! I am contemplating taking it to work with me to test it out.

My parents got me the new iPhone XR, which is great because my poor 6 was dying. This upgrade made a HUGE difference. I got the shiny red one and I love it. And then they bought us dinner, delicious gyros.

Bonus, the universe also decided it was a good time to celebrate and I won a giveaway on Entertainment Earth for a Legend of Zelda prize pack!

Now it's time to curl up with my Switch and see if I can at least get past the Monster Boy tutorial before bedtime!

[livejournal.com profile] rogueslayer452 asked "Has there been anything in media (book, television show, movie, etc) that you initially hated or didn't care for but after revisiting it much later you found yourself liking? If so, what was it that changed your perspective on it?

Parks and Recreation, for sure. I remember trying to watch the first season and just giving up because I didn't like anyone on the show and it felt like it wanted to be The Office which I was already done with. A few years later, people online were talking about it and raving about it and I think that is when it appeared on Netflix. And I was like "What is the deal? That show was terrible?" but everyone assured me I just needed to get past that first season.

Whoa nelly, were they RIGHT! The first season was just a mess, it was trying to be something it wasn't. I found out later they had an extended break between Season 1 and 2 because of the writer's strike and Amy Poehler's pregnancy, but it worked in their favor, giving the showrunners time to think about what they really wanted the show to be.

By season 2, the characters that everyone would grow to love appeared. Instead of being incompetent and ditzy, Leslie Knope became dedicated to her town, her job and her coworkers and the comedy came from her passion going to far sometimes, but not to the point of feeling like she was incompetent or ridiculous. Leslie and Ann's friendship became a powerful force at the center of the show. Ron, Tom, Andy and April went beyond the caricatures they started as and become fully fleshed out characters that felt like real people. And with the addition of Chris Traeger (Rob Lowe) and Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott), the show just clicked.

The show managed to balance comedy and social commentary and character arcs over the next six seasons.

It is a rare comedy show that lets its characters learn and change and grow, but Parks and Recreation did just that, and by the series finale, they had all helped each other become better people.

I should have known - it seems that shows that have rough starts tend to have the strongest finishes, while series that have amazing first seasons tend to falter, or at least, not be able to reach the high bar they set from the get go every again.

And to think a show that I switched off in the middle of the first season became one of my top ten shows of all time!

(Hm...I need some Leslie icons)

[identity profile] xlovebecomesher.livejournal.com asked me "What is your favorite memory from UMBC?"

Random fact about me - I have a crap memory. Like, I forget EVERYTHING unless it is somehow tied into a fandom, I swear it is embarrassing. Tim will remember lovely little relationship things and ask me if I remember them and I usually have to strain to think if I do.

ANYWAY, so what do I remember about college?

Well, I didn't go away to school, I stayed at home and commuted. I was being frugal and I also wasn't ready to be on my own and I knew it. The idea of having to do everything by myself did not sound like fun and having to share a room with a stranger? Yeah, no. I had my own room at home, my own computer, TV and parents that were happy to keep me. So I don't have any wild nights at college stories.

That being said, I have two favorite things I remember from college. First, my radio show! Yes, UMBC had a radio station, WMBC, and the best thing about it was that it was streaming before streaming was a thing. Which was good because the radio signal itself did not go beyond the dining room that the station was situated next to. So I told all my IRL friends and online friends to tune in (this was pre-LJ for me, so online friends were AOL IM friends from high school and people I had met on Dave Matthews Band message boards).

I took an evening shift, I think it was 9pm on a Monday or something random like that, because it meant I could play whatever I wanted. It's not like anything I was playing would be controversial, but it was probably too mundane for the afternoon crowd. Sometimes I would walk through the dining area and they would be blaring some heavy metal scream-o. And then I'd roll in at 9pm and the place would be empty and I would do a themed show that included The Beatles and up and coming artists like John Mayer before he was John Mayer. I was really into the "little guy" music scene but I was also into chill singer/songwriters and also a big fan of NPR's Songs for Aging Children, which would always do shows where all the songs fit a theme.

One of my high school friends came by the station one night to hang out with me. He took these photos of me in the studio:

Sam @ WMBC Sam @ WMBC

Damn, I was skinny!

My second favorite memory was finding out one of my professor's new Joss Whedon back in the day and I got to do that six degrees of separation. He was my favorite professor too. Let me write a paper on how having shows like 'Angel' set in Los Angeles shows that American culture still sees the West as a wild and crazy place to set out and find your dreams, manifest destiny and what not.

Anyone else have any college memories they are brave enough to share? Comment here or post on your own DW/LJ if you plan to ramble on as long as I did and include photos! :D
orangerful: (avasarala)
Yeah, remember how I had a grand plan to post every day this month? LOL, yeah I was off today and forgot it was March 1st.

SO - RANDOM SAM FACTOID FOR YOU!

I'm a FISH! Well, two FISH!

I'm a Pisces.

I don't actually put much stock in Horoscopes. It's funny, when I was a tween/teen, I felt like Pisces fit me perfectly, saying I was shy and introverted etc. but I'm not so sure anyone would say that about me now.

The thing is though, while I might appear extroverted, I keep a lot of things to myself. I try to be sociable and chatty with people but they only get to know so much about me. I'm very private when it comes to my personal life, but very open about my fandoms so people tend to know those things really well.

It's one of those things about my personality that I recognize now and kind of wish I had worked on more when I was younger. I never bonded with my high school friends the way I feel other people did. I never really made those connections in college either. I did make a lot of online friends in college and afterwards because of LJ and being just totally open with my fandom love, finding people to talk about shows with etc. but I didn't really have that in real life.

And it is weird, I am introverted but at the same time, I feel like I draw power from crowds. I'm so excited about PAX East at the end of this month. I love helping out with the library's Comic Con program. I mean, I'm exhausted afterwards, but in the moment I'm just feeding off of everyone else's excitement, if that makes any sense?

Hm, this post got ramble-y. This is why you should submit questions LOL. I'm still glad to take some!
orangerful: (weeee)
My birthday is next month and I haven't done a "question of the day" in awhile and I've got a few new friends on here so I've decided it will be a month ALL ABOUT ME!

ASK ME ANYTHING!

I've got 31 days to fill! Silly questions, serious questions, deep questions, not-so-deep, top ten lists, past, present, future, photo requests - WHATEVER YOU WANT TO KNOW!

Let's have some fun!
orangerful: (one girl // orangerful)
So these got lost in the shuffle of the spring break trip! I know you've all been waiting on the edge of your seats LOL!

Oh and I also wanted to say, it's been a month or so now since the MEGA FRIENDING of 2016. If we're not clicking, feel free to unfriend me, no worries. I know my flist is very active and I'm having a hard time keeping up. So, yeah, no hard feelings if you want to take my off your list.

ANYWAY! On to the final 3:

29. [livejournal.com profile] eowyn asked: What's your all-time favourite R and R activity?
Hm, I guess snuggling up on the couch with a good movie and some popcorn, maybe a classic Disney/Pixar or Star Wars, something with a happy ending. (I'm realizing how little I actually R and R haha)

30. [livejournal.com profile] rogueslayer452 asked: What is the most obscure thing you own?
I have a Yoda backpack that was only made in the UK and my ex bought it for me off of eBay. I love it because it was a very limited run and it's just a damn cool backpack. (I'm trying to find a photo of me wearing him, but it was clearly before I knew how to tag stuff on Flickr...you can kinda see him here) I like him more than the Yoda backpacks that are out now because he is actually *in* a backpack, just like he is on Luke's back, not just Yoda hanging on like a monkey.

And then there is my Buffy academic books, which are pretty obscure because who the heck reads that stuff but us hardcore nerds? :)

31. [livejournal.com profile] icecoldrain asked: Do you have any tattoos? If you don't, have you ever considered getting one? NOPE! NOPE! I am a wuss. I have commitment issues. There is no way I would get a tattoo because I know I would immediately change my mind about it seconds later. Plus, I'm always afraid the moment I get a tattoo, the thing I tattooed will suddenly go evil. Like, if I did a Joss Whedon thing, Joss would turn into a crazy person and then I'd be stuck with it forever!

The only thing I think I could ever get tattooed on me would be "orangerful" because it's my other name. I've had it since 1999 so I guess I'm sticking with it?
orangerful: (Default)
We went hiking today. I actually felt pretty good when I woke up. I'm in the super-fun drainage portion of this cold so my nose was running and I kept hacking up yellow gunk BUT I FEEL NORMALISH!

Anyway, we hiked for most of the afternoon in beautiful Rocks Park (clever name...there are rocks there). Saw a lovely waterfall and a really cool rock formation that was apparently featured in 'Tuck Everlasting' for anyone who has seen that.

Only bad part is that I appear to be very sunburnt on my face. *FAIL*

anyway, on to some questions! Going to do a few ahead since we are driving to Wisconsin on Monday and I won't be able to post (well, I could post via my phone but we all know how fun THAT app is!)

25. [livejournal.com profile] stydia asked: What book would you like to see turned into a movie/television show?
I'm still waiting on my Y: The Last Man tv series! I know it has been optioned a few times now, but nothing has come of it. Right now, FX has it "in development" but there are no details. It would need to be a series though, there is FAR too much story to cram into a movie. It would be hilarious if they could do 'Transmetropolitan' as a TV show but I'm not sure they can legally show that stuff on tv...then again, there is a Preacher show that is supposed to come out later this year and that comic was banned (and not because of the weird scene where that guys has sex with an armadillo...).

26. [livejournal.com profile] rachg82 asked: What would you consider to be your spirit animal?
If I had to go with an actual animal I'd probably go with a dog (and now all I can think of is the Parks & Rec episode where they pick spirit dogs for everyone). I had an Australian Sheep Dog when I was a kid (well she was part that and something else, mutts 4 life). She was the best dog, so sweet and loving and fun. I think Australian sheep dog would be my spirit animal.

27. [livejournal.com profile] verdande_mi Favourite fandom-memory/happening?
All of my adventures at Dragon*Con, but especially getting to meet and hang out with [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly and [livejournal.com profile] jellibean for the first time after being LJ friends for so many years. And meeting up as the wild party that is D*C made it even more fun.

Other than that would be the time I met Joss Whedon, but I've blogged about that adventure a few times now because it makes me happy every time I think about it. :)

28. [livejournal.com profile] kaitydid33087 asked: If you could meet anyone, real or fictional, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Well, as I mentioned above, I met Joss so I'm good. :) I guess the next person on my list would be Steven Spielberg. I'd love to sit at a table with him and listen to him talk about film and directing and storytelling. I feel like he has a good grasp on where he came from and where he is going as a filmmaker.

Wait, no, Oscar Isaac. I want to sit and drool next to him. He so pretty.

(yes, I went from lofty fangirl to horny fangirl in the middle of writing that response, I blame the fact that I had tumblr open in the browser behind my LJ editor)

orangerful: (Default)
#20 [livejournal.com profile] dontjudgeme asked: What fictional animal would you want as your own pet if you could? Like...specific fictional: "Garfield" would fit here but just "unicorn" would not.
I'd say Buckbeak but there were far too many safety issues with that pet and I don't need the Malfoys sueing me! :P
Right now, because this is where my mind is, I would say Dogmeat from Fallout 4. He was a good companion, never judges you, goes and kills badguys for you and also brings me stuff. Also he is IMMORTAL!

I kept thinking of other creatures but they weren't really "pets". Like Falcor from Neverending Story. Or Jake from Adventure Time. Or R2-D2...they are companions more than pets.

#21 [livejournal.com profile] phenomenal asked: What do you do in your free time?
Well, if judging by today is anything to go by, nothing. But I was home sick with some kind of sinus thing so you can't blame me!

Freetime usually is spent goofing around online, watching tv or movies, and playing video games.

Oh and reading, though that is usually only at my work lunch break and before bedtime.

When the weather is nice, we do tend to plan weekend hikes or at least nice walks around the park. And if I can get the time off, I like to go on trips and other adventures that tend to leave me less rested than most other people's vacations LOL.
orangerful: (doctor who too normal // orangerful)
[livejournal.com profile] rogueslayer452 asked: In your opinion, which show (past or present) do you think was completely overhyped by the media (note: not horrible, but just overexposed)? What show do you think was completely overlooked?
The Walking Dead.

Happy Endings. This show cracked me UP almost every time, was far too clever for it's own good. It could have been so much more but the network didn't really give it a chance. I think some of this was because it wasn't streaming on Hulu or there was an odd delay or something. I remember trying to watch it on the network app while getting lunch before a meeting and just having an awful time streaming it.

[livejournal.com profile] dontjudgeme asked: You've been tasked with creating a fandom-related theme park. You get to choose the fandom, the location of the park, and the first 2 attractions. What are they?
I want to say Star Wars but Disney is already got that covered for me. I'm not sure a Buffy theme park would work LOL, it's kinda like Hunger Games, we'll all end up dead at the end!

OH How about a Doctor Who theme park? It could be fun and educational, travel to different time periods and explore, just like The Doctor and companion.

The main attraction would be a ride in the TARDIS! Marvel at how it is bigger on the inside! Feel it get wibbly-wobbley as you trave through space and time!

The second attraction...hm...I feel like this would be a good daring escape. Escape from Pompeii!...no wait, I think that is an actual ride at Busch Gardens...how about escape from the weeping angels? It will be a ride on rails that takes you through the underground lair where the angel Bob and his group are awaiting you. Don't BLINK! (seriously, don't, the cart will inch closer any time you blink)

[livejournal.com profile] night_owl_9 asked: What subjects were your favorite in school? Your least favorite?
Wow, you know what, I don't really remember? I enjoyed most of my classes in school. I know the class I had the worst time in was Geometry in 10th grade. That just did not click with me at all. And the last semester of Chemistry was rough. Otherwise, I had a good time. My very favorite semester was when my English and History/Social Studies classes actually lined up and were covering the same time period (yes, imagine that, reading Great Gatsby while studing the 1920s! And reading Grapes of Wrath while learning about the Great Depression, crazy!)

[livejournal.com profile] dontjudgeme asked: What are different ways that you categorize yourself? (i.e. sister, daughter, INFJ, star wars lover)
My profile on almost all of my social sites now reads "librarian. blogger. gamer. geek. girl." which probably sums me up the best.

I geek out about a lot of things, though Star Wars and Joss Whedon would probably be at the top. My facebook used to list my religion as Whedonist LOL (Whedon fans never had a cool nickname as far as I know...).

Oh, I like this quite from Mike Myers, which is "I am a site specific extrovert". I can be a total spaz but I choose my moments wisely. I'm definitely more extroverted than I was as a kid, but I think that just comes with being more comfortable in my own skin.
