So, I finally watched the first two episodes of
Mad Men today. Like
Gilmore Girls, I find myself sucked in to the atmosphere of the show in a way that I cannot explain and doesn't quite gel with my other tv viewing. It's relationship drama, it's historical drama -- a period piece.
I have to say, I love that it is on AMC which means I'm not forced to watch a lot of random sex or swearing (sorry
True Blood, I still haven't finished that first episode). And the whole fifties attitude towards the world, especially in light of our current issues and situations, is both amusing and horrifying. I'm still learning the characters' names, but I find the male lead (Don Draper?) to be quiet a construction...he's not really a "hero", he just happens to be the center of the story. I like the "new girl" as well, though I'm not quite sure what she is going to do. I'm amused by
Connor Vincent Kartheiser's role, just because Amy and I are halfway through Angel s4 and we were complaining about his character on that show. He's slimy in a whole different way on
Mad Men.
And, as many have said, the costumes are gorgeous. With any luck, designers will start putting out adorable 50s/60s style dresses. I could totally get into wearing those every now and then. So cute and lots of fun colors.
Also, random, but I posted on Twitter that I was watching the show and I get a note that "
bettydraper" is now following me on Twitter. I guess it's just someone role-playing the character. Still, weird.
One episode left on the first disc then I am totally getting disc two from Netflix. Does Season 2 start soon? I might want to set up the DVR to tape it while I'm catching up with Season 1 (what the heck channel is AMC anyhow??)
