Earlier this year, I read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and I loved it.  I'm talking 5 out of 5 stars, must tell everyone I know about this book LOVED it.  It had everything I wanted in a story - action, adventure, kick-ass heroine, well-developed side characters, and a hint of relationship stuff (but not so much that I started to gag).

Last month, the sequel was released - Catching Fire.

I am not going to post any spoilers because the thing that made reading Hunger Games and Catching Fire so great was how little I knew about them before I started.  But let's just say that Catching Fire has everything Hunger Games had, but kicked up a notch.  It picks up right where we left off...

That being said, I give Catching Fire 4 out of 5 stars because of the usual reasons with middle books - this book is more about setting things up for the grand finale than anything else so the ending is a lot rougher than Hunger Games, which felt like the first Star Wars movie - yeah, there was more to do, but it had a satisfying ending for the biggest story.

With Catching Fire, Suzanne Collins knows that she owns us, that we are invested in these characters, and that we'll be expecting that cliffhanger.  And she gives it to us.  I read the last page several times, trying to figure out exactly what it all meant because I know I have another year before I found out what happens.

Seriously, why are you reading this post?  You should be reading Hunger Games or Catching Fire RIGHT NOW!

Well, [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly will be very happy with me - I'm almost done with my [livejournal.com profile] whedon20in20 set! I think I have two left to create, then I just need to go through and tweak the images I already have cropped.

Watched the pilot episode of "COMMUNITY" tonight - that show was pretty frakkin' hilarious. I hope they can keep up that level of ridiculousness for the rest of the season. I'm worried it might be too smart for its own good. But I know we both laughed out loud quite a few times during that 20 minutes of show.

We switched over to Comcast yesterday because Broadstripe had gotten a bit too expensive. We'd been using them since we moved into our apartment so they had stopped giving us pricing deals, and then the Comcast guy happened to show up with a MUCH better deal. So we said yes. Only thing was, I forgot to write down all my TV shows that I set up to tape on the DVR! So now I have to catch things as they air so I can reprogram the DVR...but I haven't watched anything on live TV in so long, I'm not even SURE when things air anymore. So keep reminding me of premieres, flisters!

I had to go to court today though they never even asked me to say anything. I had to be there at 8:30, but they didn't get around to our guy until 10:30! So, I got to watch a lot of random stuff going on. My favorite exchange of the day was this:

State's Attorney: "Is [insert name here] in the room?"
(No answer)
State's Attorney: "Your Honor, it is 9:30 and [insert name here] has not arrived for their hearing..."
Judge: "It appears the defendant is deceased."
State's Attorney: "??????"
Judge: "I have a note here, it happened on Sunday so we don't have a death certificate yet."
State's Attorney: "Well, then I'd like request a postponement"

That pretty much sums up the whole day. You can lose your faith in people after sitting in that room for any extended period of time. That was the third (and hopefully FINAL) time I will have to do that. Most of the stuff we saw was driving violations. I love how they ask what grade you completed in school - apparently the ONE time your GPA and "permanent record" count are if you get busted. So stay in school kids!

For some reason the brand new Guitar Hero 5 controller we got for the library does not work. BLURGH! I'm going to test it again tomorrow and if it is still not responding, I'm calling Activision. Their GH support website told me that it should work because it's the Wii-mote that controls the guitar. But the Wii-mote turns on but as soon as you plug it into the guitar, it does weird things, like switches from player 2 to player 1 and the guitar doesn't respond. Stupid plastic piece of crap.

TGIF!!!!!!!!! So looking forward to the weekend - I get to see Helen Mirren on STAGE at the Shakespeare Theatre in D.C. on Saturday. :D Should be fun.
