Rally To Restore Sanity
Oct. 31st, 2010 02:13 pmSo, Perri, Alan, Stephanie, and myself went together down to the Rally To Restore Sanity and/or Fear yesterday. We meant to get on the road a lot earlier, but Alan and I may or may not have rocked too hard the night before on RB3 and then watched Fantastic Mr Fox...but anyway, we made it to the Greenbelt Metro Station and there was a HUGE line. Like nothing I have seen before. We joined the crowd and slowly inched forward for the next hour. You could see the first few silly signs. A guy dressed as a pilgrim with a sign that said "Burn Thee Witches!" and a girl with an "I'm Not Sure!" sign.
We made it down to D.C. and it was a kind of controlled chaos. You could hear the music of The Roots bouncing off the buildings as soon as you exited. We entered into a sea of people and moved around, looking at more great signs and costumes. Eventually we weaved our way out of the big crowd and began moving to the end of the clump. We must have been halfway down the Mall. The Daily Show crew were at the Capital end of the Mall and we were further down than the Smithsonian castle, if that gives any of you natives an idea of how far away we were.
I think the initial estimate was 200,000+ people. Haven't had a chance to search around today for the real numbers. You could tell they were just as surprised as we were. You could make out the voices coming from the stage as Jon and Stephen but it was too difficult to figure out what they were saying.
But we were there! We were counted! We had a great time! Everyone was so polite!
Quite the adventure. My mom called today and I told her how good it felt just to be around sane people, people who, like most of us, casually follow the politics but don't take it all so damn seriously. She told me that Jon gave a great speech at the end of the day, so I Googled around and found the video. It is well done and sums up how I felt about the entire gathering.
