Jun. 2nd, 2006 12:26 ami forgot how much I loved Pearl Jam. I'm watching the 'Touring Band 2000' dvd now. I meant to just watch the 'Do the Evolution' video because someone had an icon of death dancing in one of the pj comms I was perusing. But then I wanted to see 'Given to Fly' with the sign language interpreter. Now I'm watching 'Evenflow' because that was taped at my first PJ concert...ah the memories
There was a good chunk of 1999/2000 that I spent researching Pearl Jam. That's what I did with bands back then. I hardly ever get into older music because of the music...I had to be lured in my some story. (I got into The Beatles because of the anthology documentary, and most of the other 60s band because they were mentioned in that documentary). And I had missed Pearl Jam back in their hey-day. I was anti-anything cool, I think I was still listening to my moms 80s cds. I just lumped them in with all the other "yelling" bands and I had no idea what they were about. Honestly, I don't think I could have appreciated them then, my understanding of the world wasn't there yet.
I can't remember what got me into Pearl Jam now that I think abou it. Might have been the whole Ticketmaster battle. I wish I could remember. I know that I felt the need to listen to all their music. I have a vague memory of reading a least on biography on the group...which is why my knowledge of underground bands from that time even exists. I remember getting annoyed with the book when I read that the author didn't like the band and that halfway thru it turned into a bashing thing...I also remember going to a lot of pearl jam websites and reading the stories behind the songs, especially 'Alive'.
and I remember trading a dave matthews band show for pearl jam show and then meeting up with
sideflip1 in Philly that random day in 2000 to watch the concert and being totally blown away. I spent the entire concert on my toes, bouncing to the music, knowing every word by heart. And at the end of the concert,
sideflip1's cousin told me I was "cool"! And then I went and sat in my car alone for 30 minutes waiting for the parking lot to empty out enough for me to leave so I could drive the 2 hours home to Maryland. I think I bought all the pearl jam albums right after that.
there really wasn't a point to this post.
dstntp1lgr1m and I were discussing our passion for music and musical groups last night and how we felt bad for people who didn't have that kind of passion in their lives. Who don't let themselves taste all the different kinds of music out there. Who can't look beyond the sounds and see the meanings. I think that's why I like Pearl Jam so much - their music has meaning. They don't just pump out pop tunes or angsty love songs (though they have a few), they write songs that say something, some put it out there, others you have to read between the lines but the meanings are there. I guess I had forgotten about that. The concert on Tuesday reminded me.
sideflip1, I cannot thank you enough for that extra ticket back in 2000.
