orangerful: (totally wicked // orangerful)

Just got home from the Guster concert at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore (part of [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy's birthday presents). It was a good show. I convinced [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy that we should go there early. We found out yesterday that Guster didn't actually go on stage until 9pm but the other act, Ray LaMontagne, sounded like someone I might like. So we got down there around 7:30, which is when LaMontagne went on stage. I have to say, I was sorta let down. He was really hairy (he had long hair and a crazy beard!) but otherwise unimpressive in his musical stylings. Sounded a lot like Ryan Adams to me. And I enjoy Ryan Adams' music, but I don't need another Ryan Adams.

This is a problem I have a lot of times I ask for music or book suggestions. People suggest other bands or authors that write exactly the same way as ones I enjoy. But I'd prefer something new. For example. I enjoy John Mayer's music. There are several male artists out right now that sound a lot like John Mayer vocally. And people keep saying "oh well if you like him, you'll like this guy too". But the slot of "people who sing like John Mayer" has already been filled in my book, but Mr Mayer himself. I don't need another one! Same with books - I was always trying to find an author who could amuse me as much as Douglas Adams, and everyone kept reccomending Terry Pratchett, but his style was sort of close to Adams, to the point where I was like "well, I'd rather just re-read Hitchhiker's than start this series". Now I've stumbled upon Christopher Moore and I'm adoring his style, which is different than Adams' but at the same time, has a similar soul to it. If that makes any sense?

Anyway - yes, the concert was great! Guster came on and played tunes from all of their albums. The stuff off of 'Ganging Up on the Sun' sounded really good live. 'One Man Wrecking Machine' has really grown on me. I didn't care for it much the first time I heard it and now I just love it. (this might have been the music videos fault, the little creatures that star in the video are a little odd looking, I had to listen to it on the album before I started to like it). Ryan also had a beard, but his was more under control. He said LaMontagne's beard was so crazy, that he is shaving the beard after tonight, because there's just no point in even trying with that beard around. He also poked fun at the people who had pulled their boats up next to the venue (it is actually built on Pier 6) and who were watching the concert for free.

Okay, I'm going to go rip all my Guster CDs and load up my iPod!
