journey of jen
Jul. 12th, 2006 09:59 pmA little girl came up to the desk with the 'Dark Crystal' DVD in her hand and I convinced her to check it out. I told her that it was made by the Jim Henson company so everything in it is a puppet. (She pointed to the cover and I confirmed that, yes, even Jen is a puppet!) I also told her about the Skesis and how they were freaky looking - a mix of a hawk and lizard and that they made weird noises. (She then asked me if I could make one of the noises so I did the "MmMMMMmmmm" sound effect, which I think amused her.) I also told her that they had giant bugs that they send out to catch the hero. (I wish I had a camera at that moment because she made the best face - a combination of "ew gross!" and "oooh I can't wait to see that!").
I hope she enjoys it. Many of my friends who did not see it as kids and saw it later have told me it would have freaked them out as a child. I've always loved 'Dark Crystal. Another oft quoted film in our household, my mom was famous for saying Augra's "booshay booshay booshay" when she didn't feel like talking. haha.
Though I think my favorite quote from the movie would have to be the scene after they jump off the cliff and Kira reveals her wings so they float to safety.
Jen: (shocked) "Wings!? I don't have wings!"
Kira: (very matter of fact) "Of course not. You're a boy."
Freaky thing about the dvd are the extra "making of" clips where they show the rehearsal runs, and Frank Oz is obviously doing his Fozzie/Yoda voice for Augra and it's just sorta weird hearing those voices coming from her face!
For the longest time, my only copy of the movie was taped off of the TV (on BETA no less!) and it had some of the commercials still in place. It was right when McDonalds started up a clothing line in Sears and there was a commercial of Ronald, the Hamburglar, and co. running around the store at night setting up the merchandise. What a random thing to remember! I also remember that I always happened to "leave" the room when the Skesis emperor died in the first few minutes. He's just so darn freaky! It wasn't until I was an adult and bought the DVD that I actually watched that scene (actually, the same thing happend with the "Get HER!" scene in 'Ghostbusters'...yes, I was a wuss as a child!)
Okay, comment here with your favorite dark crystal quote or just a memory!
