if i had kids, this would be cool
Oct. 29th, 2006 01:08 pmJust found this site while clicking around netflix - common sense media. It's a ratings/review site that tries to help parents pick out age appropriate material for their children. The nice thing is, it's not a scary conservative group and it doesnt' talk down to parents and pretend that every child is the same.
dstntp1lgr1m will be happy to see that they fully endorse 'Nightmare Before Christmas' as family viewing! They put a few disclaimers in but it's nice to see that they don't say "NEVER WATCH IT". Instead, they offer a constructive way to watch - if the movie is scaring little Timmy, pause the film and talk about reality vs. fantasy, or see if they can explain what's scaring them.
I also like how their ratings system aknowledges that films that are being marketed to young kids are not for them. They also have a great explaination of their "age appropriatness" system.
This is actually pretty cool. They also cover video games, books, music, and internet! I'm thinking I might suggest this site be added to our AACPL Reccomended Sites list. I have so many parents who ask me for reccomendations for their tween and I'm horrible with that. I'm always afraid I'm going to give the most sex/drugged crazed book to some poor kid because the cover looked fun!
I'm going to keep playing with this a bit more....
