book thoughts: Subtle Knife

I'm a little over halfway through 'Subtle Knife' now. I popped in disc 5 this afternoon, and there are only 8 discs. So I wanted to post my thoughts.
At first, I didn't like Will very much. I'm not sure if it was the voice actor or just how he's older than Lyra so he can come off as a bit bossy sometimes. Plus, for that first bit of the book, you're not quite sure if he's all there. Anyway, I like him now. He just helped Lyra get the alethiometer back, so he's only got 8 fingers, but still a lot of attitude. When I left them, they were inside the house in Ci'gazze (omg, that is so not how i would have spelled that...it's very different listening to this book, thank goodness for Wikipedia) and Angelica, Paulo, and the other kids were starting to come out of hiding to beat them up.
Oh, and Sir Charles. Grrr, what a bastard! There's an actor in the Golden Compass trailer and I'm wondering if he will be the one playing Sir Charles. If you watch the trailer, he is with Miss Coulter when she gets into her car. I think he would be a perfect Sir Charles.
There is just SO much going on in 'Subtle Knife'. So many different stories, it's hard to keep track. And I get caught up in one, and then it switches to another, and for a few moments I'm disappointed, but then I get caught up in the new story! Lee Scoresby has finally found John Perry and they are traveling, and Lee just made John promise to get Lyra the protection of the knife!
Oh, and what a SCENE that was with Serafina Pekelah making herself unnoticable and then watching the witch get tortured! And when she appears and stabs her right in the heart! WHOA! And she gets away too! Frakkin' amazing! I was on the edge of my car seat during that. So sad!
I read the blurb in the latest Entertainment Weekly, and they are saying that all the anti-religious stuff has been removed. But how can they really tell from Golden Compass? It hardly had anything blatant until the last few chapters. 'Subtle Knife' has had a few other things so far, but nothing that insane. They call the church the "Magisterium" most of the time, and said that Asriel was going to kill the "Authority". The actual use of the word "God" or "Church" has been pretty low. Though I assume the 3rd book is where the metaphysical dust hits the fan?
And now I really want to read 'Navigating the Golden Compass', the Smart Pop books collection of essays. There's even a free preview online, but I know if I look, there will be spoilers! Can't have that! I've already been spoiled too much!
