I love this fandom.

I hate it here.

JK Rowling toasts ‘TERF VE Day’ and confirms donation to group behind Supreme Court case

Someone said that she's basically our Musk (meaning that HP is like Tesla) and alas they are right. :( The billionaire to Bond villain pipeline is definitely a thing.

Here is a link to all current gov.uk Trans petitions.

Also, let's remember that some people are wonderful. From 2020:

Daniel Radcliffe declares ‘trans women are women’ in response to JK Rowling’s anti-trans tirade

And via Owls (behind paywall for me, but might work for others):

Trans people like me will still be protected by law, no matter what opponents think

ETA: Via Kerk:

A brief summary of the Transgender/Equality Act court case

And from that post, a change.org petition:

Overturn the UK's New Legal Definition of a Woman

~

Also since I am here, a post about the benefits changes, also with many links.

Would you believe it, but Crystal has a lot of unresolved issues...

The recent half-marathon with robot competitors got me thinking. There will come a time soon when people are looked after in their old age, in their own home, by robots.

Imagine their kids' annoyance to find that the person has left their dwelling to their robot carer!

Radio Times: The Stolen Girl review: Denise Gough and Holliday Grainger show how thrillers should be done
Yes it's shlocky and full of twists and bonkers cliffhangers - but we wouldn't have it any other way.

^The reason I highlight this show is that my middle daughter* has a minor part. :)

The show premiers today on Disney+

(I am completely unspoiled, like COMPLETELY. I know nothing about the plot, all I have seen is that headline.)

*Impish Girl, who is now 23 years old! Since graduating she has done a play and a musical, but this is her first TV role.)

ETA: We have watched 3 episodes so far. It's a very typical sort of mystery thriller, and so far Impish Girl's role has been about 10 seconds long. *g*

It's not a 'omg watch this' kinda show, but if you're into that genre - go for it. Plenty of twists.

Figuring It Out

1) Nothing like returning from the post office having mailed our tax returns to get an email saying "Your corrected tax form is now available."

2) Got some really nice pics of the moon this week, posted over at common_nature

3) New watch, the Brokenwood Mysteries, saw 3 episodes. They were alright, I liked them mostly for the New Zealand angle. Figured out both of the first two mysteries well in advance, and in fact figured out why we were having various elements introduced in E2 and how they fit into the resolution.

4) Speaking of music, Name That Tune has passed the exercise test. I do often recognize a song but will then generally struggle to remember the name (or exact name). What I notice I do better on is looking at them as a trivia question. For example they had 2 TV theme clues in the last episode I watched and I got them both immediately.

5) Don't know when or if a Tumblr collapse will happen, but there have been some good explainers for new-ish people over at [community profile] newcomers.

When it's your birthday and you have some free time to make some icons. :)

I made these icons for Round 70 over @ [community profile] monthlyinspo

The theme was TEXT.

I don't normally do any text. I'm just not very good at it and never can make it look good. With the help of the provided text textures, I had a lot of fun playing with them and actually making some icons. I did some stock icons of quotes which was fun, also did some from various tv shows and you guessed it a made a couple of my football guys. :)

They're still not great so please be kind. ♥

Here are some teasers:

David Tennant Does a Podcast With… Georgia Tennant
^This is actually a misnomer, because it's Georgia interviewing David. Just the loveliest people, it's difficult to overstate.

And then I recently came across this Will Young song, and it's my new favourite:

(It's a cover of a Bats for Lashes song, original here)

The song is from the album 'Crying on the Bathroom Floor', which is an album where he covered songs from female artists. "This is not a covers album as such, well certainly not in the standard way. I wanted to bring songs from female artists who I admire into a new arena."

I have some more poems and still need to catch up on a whole bunch of RL stuff, but I figured it was about time for a public post, so all that's going to wait a bit.

Everyone has surely seen it by now, but: Murderbot trailer has dropped. Murderbot looks nothing like my mental image, in or out of the suit, but the voiceover is fun, and I like the Preservation team -- they (collectively) do match my mental image pretty well. So, this seems like it could be fun. Oh, and I love how terrible the acting on Sanctuary Moon is.

*

Taskmaster series 19 has an air date: May 1.

Taskmaster Oz s4e03 -- I like Emma's little hair buns in this ep! Spoilers from here )

The other Taskmaster thing is, there's a new "Transformative Taskmaster" podcast (by fans, about fandom/fanworks). I'm not caught up, but I listened to a couple. Well, on April 1 they announced that their next guest would be Alex, and there was speculation whether it was an April Fool's thing or not. It was not a joke XD Highlights of the 45-min interview with Alex include: a) the fan interviewer explaining the AO3 tagging system to Alex, from which his take-away is, so I can use the "Alex Horne Don't Read This" tag to search for fic? b) Alex being asked for prompts, and he mentions Pancake Day, and so many fics about Pancake Day got written instantaneously, and someone made this, and now there's a collection, c) Alex played a game where he had to guess whether an occupation was something he did in a fic or not -- he was not very good at this, and guessed yes for "painter" when that was false, but somebody went ahead and wrote a fic where he is. I have never before encountered a fandom with so permeable a fourth wall XD

*

Hugo nominees have been announced (and also I totally missed that the Nebulas had been as well): thoughts on nominees )

Looking At It Another Way

1) The thing that quickly struck me with all these seesaws Trump is doing with tariff declarations is that if you know what's going to be announced the coming day or even in the coming hours, it's quite possible to game the market in your favor. Nothing like buying low when you know you're going to crash things and then selling high when you know the market will reverse course. And unlike previous presidents, Trump does not have his assets in a blind trust.

2) Our local NPR station has, like many no doubt, an all-classical channel. The morning show is hosted by a chatty host with more of a soothing approach than just a soothing voice. I noticed in the past that he always said the date and the day of the week during his sign-ins. Now that I'm retired I notice how useful this is when your don't have your workweek keeping you up at night. And given the age of the average NPR listener, this may be the start of the day for a lot of people.

By contrast I began my day with Enter Aretha playing through my head. First heard it via Luminosity's SPN vid, Bricks.

3) At the same time, there's something very soothing about listening to a dryer going in a quiet apartment.

4) In more tales from phone automation hell, I was trying to schedule a Covid booster. I had gotten the flu vaccine from this location in September, but I remembered that I'd been unable to schedule it online because I had to set up a new profile and it wasn't letting me verify it. I mentioned it to the pharmacy when I went in and they said that it would definitely be set up given the appointment. Read more... )

I heard via Late Show that social security signups (and probably a lot of other stuff) will be discontinued via phone, and to boot a number of offices will be closing. Sounds like the ability to talk to anyone will soon be a thing of the past.

5) I can't fathom why, when hitting voice mail, people can't just leave a message. Had 3 calls in a row from our leasing office and by the time we got to the phone they hung up each time. Even people with cell phones may not have them in their hands or might be in the middle of something when called! If you say what you're calling about you can get a quicker response.

I'm late with this one...
Finding Hope And Spring On Transgender Day Of Visibility
The past three months have been brutal for transgender people—but if there’s one thing our community knows, it’s how to travel through darkness to find spring.

Useful:
Tracking the rise of anti-trans bills in the U.S.
The United States has experienced a long rise in anti-trans legislation. Now it's surging.

Know hope:
‘Just plain old Larry’: A Wisconsin man’s testimony about gender-affirming care went viral. Here’s his story.
Milwaukee retiree Larry Jones, 85, came to a legislative hearing supporting a ban. He changed his mind after hearing from transgender youth.
