What's up with GoodReads? I saw people posting about leaving the site.
Did something else go down beyond their purchase by Amazon?

I dunno, I really doubt I will leave but I also never got into any groups,
I just use the site for straight up tracking my books and posting reviews
to help with Reader's Advisory stuff at work.

I only quickly read one announcement so I may be interpreting it wrong, but it seems to me like there's a new policy where reviews can get deleted if certain things are said. Basically the review has to relate to the book and the book alone and not say anything too negative about the author, unless it is in context.

To me it means if you criticize the way the book is written/the author's style (eg: "The author's use of the first person made the story less enjoyable") it would be okay, but if you directly slated the author, it wouldn't.

There's also something about deleting shelves if they fit into the same category.

As I said, I might be wrong, but if that's all they're doing I don't see the problem.

I saw something brief on Twitter the other day about them deleting shelves? But I haven't heard much else.

I would guess the author/reviewer cold war that's been brewing oh, since people figured out they could actually talk to their favorite writers on the internet gained a new battlefield or something. That's usually what it is. Me? I only use GR to track what I'm reading and what my friends are reading, and very occasionally to post reviews, and rarely warnings about books that threw me for a loop for whatever reason.

I haven't really heard anything but from the comments it sounds likes something stupid. People using reviews to get popular and those are often negative. I only post reviews for books I review for my Historical Romance review blog that I'm apart of. It's mostly to keep track of my books and find new ones so I'll never leave.

(posted in wrong place--deleted original comment)

That doesn't sound too bad to me, but then my criticisms are always about the writing, not the authors.

I use my Goodreads basically the way you do, [livejournal.com profile] orangerful. I've joined a few groups but never been very active in them (and at least 2 have gone inactive.)

I'll be fine with the changes too, if they are as nickeldreams describes them. I see no use in badmouthing authors, myself, but then I don't have a flamer's personality.

I haven't read anything about people reading GoodReads so I am no help. I just use it the same way you do minus the posting reviews. The groups don't appeal to me at all for some reason.

There's Goodreads drama now? I just use that site to help track what I'm reading and to keep my LJ book posts more accurate... Oh well, I'm still there and reading away :)
