Toy Story of Terror
I'm a sucker for Toy Story and this short is no exception. I loved seeing all my favorite characters together again and on an adventure with their new owner. Since it was only 22 minutes, it didn't have time for as many jokes as the movies, but I still found myself giggling, especially during the "vintage toy commercials". Just the right amount of "scary" for little kids but enough fun for the older ones to enjoy.
Lots of fun and a solid addition to the Toy Story series.
UHF
Anyone who knows me knows I love me some Weird Al! And this movie is totally a cult classic. I quote it all the time (SUPPLIES!). Some of the jokes are dated (especially since UHF doesn't even exist anymore...though YouTube is pretty much a modern day version of UHF) but at least most of the movies that were spoofed became classics in their own right.
Plus, how can I resist "Conan the Librarian"?
Dallas Buyers Club
I can't deny that this movie was well acted, well directed, and well written for a biopic. But, honestly, it didn't do a whole lot for me. I doubt I would ever watch it again. I think perhaps the build up was too much as the story itself is a bit cliche (I know it was loosely based on this guy's life, but I think they ran it through the Hollywood filter a few too many times). Anyway, happy that the main actors got awards for their respective performances.
Ernest and Celestine
I'm not even sure how I found out about this! It just appeared on my desk at work one day. I think it might have been nominated for an Academy Award and that put it on my radar.
Beautiful animation, like a living watercolor painting, and a quirky little story make this movie a lot of fun to watch. I can see this becoming a favorite for many families out there who want something a little different for their movie collection.
A Young Doctor's Notebook and other stories
Stumbled upon this while browsing the "new on Netflix" list this afternoon and accidentally watched the whole thing (it's only 4 episodes, about 22 minutes each but still). When I saw the "cover" I thought it was going to be a serious film but it's actually very odd and quirky. It has some VERY dark moments, especially near the end, but it was an enjoyable watch. Plus how could I resist Radcliffe AND Hamm???
Into the Woods
One of my favorite Broadway musicals, I watched this version over and over, committing all the songs to memory. I hadn't actually watched it in years so it was interesting to see how the live performance difference from the cast recording CD I've been listening to non-stop since the trailer for Disney's version came out a few months ago.
It is just a straight up recording of the stage play, nothing fancy, but it does the trick.
I adore Bernadette Peters, but I really loved Joanna Gleason and her portrayal of the Baker's wife.
I wish they still did this with Broadway musicals, I would have loved to have watched WICKED this way, just to see the spectacle.
Did you watch anything good this month?
