[livejournal.com profile] twissie and a few others expressed interest in seeing more of my collection and I do love talking about my stuff so here goes:

Starting off with my first fandom and one of my first true rare collectibles (well, it felt rare to little pre-teen me!)

Star Wars Fan Club Micro Machines

I joined the Official Lucasfilm Fan Club around the time Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was just starting out (I think I found the sign-up form in the back of The Mata Hari Affair novelization that I picked up at a book fair). I was a proud card carrying member, as you can see:

But when I got these beauties in the mail, I felt so special. It was the mid-90s and I think the club was just beginning to switch over from the Lucasfilm Fan Club to the Star Wars Fan Club, prepping us for the big prequel announcement on the horizon. I had a lot of Star Wars toys that I was now taking better care of after years of play. I was also collecting the Micro Machine series. In fact, I had both of these ships and figures already.

BUT THESE WERE NUMBERED!

I knew that was important. I knew having that number on the box meant there were only a limited amount of us that received these toys. Even if I already had them sitting on a shelf in my room, THESE were better because they had a number. Oh the RUSH of knowing I had something so special in my hands. That I had earned it because of my loyalty. Yes, this was the gateway drug of collecting.

Look, the box even had special printing, TELLING me how these will be a VALUABLE addition to my collection.

I was hooked. And here I am twenty years later a proud member of the DC Star Wars Collecting Club.

Do you collect anything? What was the first collectible you remember being really excited about?

Was the box right? Are they worth much now?

When I was younger, I used to collect the GI Joe toys, but I was a bad collector and opened them/played with them. :P

That's cool! :D I love the old Star Wars toys, they're so... nostalgic? I can't find the word I'm looking for, but seeing the toys and the merchandise just puts me in a good place.

I've never really been this kind of collector. With the toys and limited editions and keeping things in boxes. It's never been my thing. I do collect (on a pure hobby basis) Super Nintendo games (both European and Japanese). I've worked up a pretty good collection, I think. I know I have some rare ones, I recently found one on display at a game store for over $90 O_O;;;;

I also collect Disney theme park merchandise, but again only on a leisurely level. I don't have display cases or anything ... though admittedly this collection is growing quite large XD I should sort through all my stuff and just take an inventory of it, haha.

As a kid I was into all sorts of trading cards and collectible sticker things. I HAD SO MUCH JURASSIC PARK STUFF; YOU WON'T BELIEVEEEE ALL THE STICKER BOOKS FILLED WITH DINOSSSSS.

My vintage toys are still at my parent's house, in the basement somewhere. I will reclaim them someday when we get our own house.

I hardly ever keep things in boxes actually. I have a few things, like this and the exclusive Buffy Funko Pop figures that I have left in the boxes, but the more normal items I open and display. One of my personal rules is that if I can't display it, I can't buy it. No point in having boxes and bins of stuff stored away for years (which some of the people in my Star Wars club do).

I'm also not a "completist" by any stretch of the imagination. I have some favorite characters that I will buy and every now and then I will get a whole set of a run of figures, but I don't spend big money. I tend to spend lots of little money lol. :)

OMG my trading cards are also at my parent's house...in TRAPPER KEEPERS! LOL. My Jurassic Park figures should be there too. My poor T-Rex glitched at one point and wouldn't stop roaring and my Dad decided to do "surgery" to fix the noise box. So she has a bit of a scar in the middle. Gah, I want those back, those figures were awesome! Maybe I will reclaim them when the new movie comes out and do a post about them. :)

Hm...now to think about which toy/figure to feature next...

You know, I have no idea because I would never part with them LOL. (just checked ebay...yeah that aren't worth anything LOL)

I opened all my toys too, I just didn't open these because 1) I already had them from another set and 2) it said "exclusive" and all that. The rest of my collection is open and on display whenever possible. No point in having toys if you lock them away! I saw Toy Story 2!!! I don't want them to feel like Stinky Pete!

Hahahah I know that feeling! I want to play with all the toys, too.

Too bad it's not worth more! Even if you're not going to sell it, it'd still be good to know. :)

Oooooo.

I collect comic books. I do not care much for collectibles, even when I worked in a comic book store.

Well, I like them, but I don't care about owning them myself.

I did collect the Season 8 Buffy comics and the recent Serenity comics but then I stopped and switched over to trades and then the Buffy's came out in Hardcover LOL. I will probably get any future ones in just hardcover but yeesh books are heavy when you move!

Yeah, and they take up more space, so I try to only get paperbacks, either in graphic novels or regular books.
