I didn't watch The Oscars last night as I don't have live TV anymore but from what I heard it was disappointment all around. And then I saw that apparently there was a lot of bad mouthing of "mainstream movies" especially superhero films. I'm happy that James Gunn made a statement on his Facebook, defending the genre. The market may be oversaturated with comic book properties, but when you have people like Gunn and Whedon at the helm, they put just as much care into those scripts, into that story, into the editing, maybe more, than any of the best picture nominees.

I think they are just bitter that films like 'Guardians' will live on for generations, a movie that both kids and adults can enjoy and eat popcorn and laugh together. Because apparently that is not what a "best picture" is. Blah.

I lost faith in The Oscars awhile ago. Over the past few years, I've seen less and less of what has been nominated. I still watch a LOT of movies, but the Best Picture nominees tend to be the usual miserable people, crying, lying, dying. There was a beacon of light with 'Grand Budapest Hotel' but I knew it would never win.

aaaaaaaaaand...I had something else to say and I have completely forgotten! GAH! We watched an episode of "Daily Show" and then two episodes of "The Nightly Show", which I'm really enjoying. We listened to Terry Gross interview Larry Wilmore on NPR and I had no idea he had been behind the scenes for SO LONG. He totally deserves the new show.

It has been a Monday and I am exhausted. Gonna go put my jammies on and read about a freaky serial killer. Goodnight all!

Events like the Oscars rarely award the things that deserve to get the recognition they deserve. The fact that such films like Selma and Gone Girl, films that aren't just beautifully made but also incredible in their own right, were outright snubbed makes me very bitter. And of course "mainstream blockbuster" like superhero films or any other genre film such as fantasy and the like will never get that proper respect that they also deserve, as well. The only time I can recall something like that happening was with Lord of the Rings, I believe. Sigh.

Yeah, I've been bitter since I figured out that so many Oscars seem to be awarded each year for the previous year. Like, Michael Keaton could star in a car commercial next year and i bet they give him the award because they will feel bad he didn't get it this year. I swear that is what happened with Judi Dench when she won for 'Shakespeare in Love' a movie she is barely in - the year before she was nominated for a best actress and didn't get it. I dunno, it's hard to take them seriously when you know it's probably just as bad as high school with cliques and such.

I watched the Oscars like I do every year and enjoyed it. I don't remember that much bad mouthing of superhero movies and the like, though I can understand the frustration since there are probably way too many of them out there.

I would like there to be more variety in what gets nominated, but I think plenty of best pictures will live on just as much as superhero movies.

Grand Budapest didn't win the main award, but it did come away with the most wins of the night.

I'm happy Grand Budapest got something! Wes Anderson really is a very unique director and I hope he keeps getting positive attention.

I'm with you on the Oscars. Rarely does a movie I'm interested in even get mentioned, and even then it never wins. Plus the whole red carpet thing and such a waste of money... I just skip the whole night.

I still haven't caught The Night Show, though I did hear the Terry Gross interview and now I do want to try it out.

Nightly Show is really well done, I really like how the show is set up with the panel of guests and discussion. It actually can get pretty serious but the humor does find a way out.

James Gunn is kind of a treasure, in my opinion. I've given up on awards shows, period. I was glad to see that Big Hero 6 won, and that made me happy.

Big Hero 6 may be the first Disney movie I haven't seen in the theater in a long time. I'm on the wait list for it at the library, so now it just needs to show up!

I took Drake to see it and we loved it! I freely admit to sobbing like a baby right there in the theater in a part or two :) I hope you like it when you get to see it!

I really hate the backlash against mainstream things trying to present them as bad because they are popular. I had this argument with a friend who mainly listens to indie music and I said I really like the new Taylor Swift album and then got an earfull about how she would never listen to an album like that.

*headdesk* Popular does not mean bad. Indie does not mean good. There's some of good and some bad in both categories.

I don't watch award shows anymore. I quit a few years back and don't miss them at all. I don't need the media to tell me what the "best" is because I know what I like.

This is pretty much how I feel about awards shows in general. Occasionally something really deserving wins, but mostly it's a bunch of self-congratulatory BS. Art is so objective, it's really hard to quantify it and say, "yes this *points* this is the best." Everybody likes different things for different reasons (sometimes different things at different times), and that's okay.
