I've only listened to the first book. I'm not very good at reading fantasy books LOL. I prefer my fantasy in visual format. That being said, I have enough friends on LJ that have read the series.
The first season and first book are pretty darn close. After that, while stories may be the same, who certain things happen to change as a TV cannot handle the amount of characters that a book series can. So there has been a lot of shuffling of plot points and such. I've heard that the latest series has now gone beyond the books so they have been creating whole new plot lines.
It might be fun just to watch it together and then you can discuss the differences. Just make sure he doesn't spoil you!!
