So, we just finished watching 10 Cloverfield Lane

I think it's going to take me 24 hours to really get my head around the whole thing but here is my initial reaction:

First, a big screw you to the person that designed the DVD cover art, because on the back of the DVD there is a pretty spoilery image. It didn't ruin the movie for me, per se, but I did end up *waiting* for that image to happen.

It is unfortunate that was just watched the episode Ted from Buffy Season 2. Just...lots of the same red flags.

I know this was a semi-sequel to Cloverfield but all I could think about was Steven Spielberg's take on War of the Worlds, though I think that might have been because of the noise the alien ships made.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I loved or hated the last 20 minutes...

More coherent thoughts later, maybe. I'll have to dig around and find [livejournal.com profile] rhoda_rants's post about the movie from last month -- anyone else see it and/or post about it?? linky linky please!

We saw it a month or so ago because my husband really wanted to see it. I found it really engaging throughout.

SPOILER WARNING

Even though the movie's only PG-13, I spent the last twenty minutes or so watching it curled up at my husband's side - my head pressed against his shoulder. It was very tense. I kept wondering if the Goodman character was still alive and kept expecting him to pop back up.

YES! I kept waiting for a disgusting skull man to jump out at the last minute! Glad they didn't go for a cheap thrill.

Yeah, that or John Goodman with some half normal face/half Freddy Krueger deal.

Glad they didn't go for it, too. Though maybe they're just saving that for the sequel LOL.

So that movie is a successor to Cloverfield in name only. It was made as a completely different movie 100% unrelated, but the studio dropped it at the last minute (it was supposed to just be a psychological thriller). The Cloverfield people picked it up and filmed a couple extra scenes, the last 20 minutes, etc. - so it takes place in the same UNIVERSE as Cloverfield, but that's about it.

Yeah, and I really think that is a cool idea - same universe, different experience. I'd actually be up for seeing another one, though I'm not sure what the twist could be.

I did not know that it was sorta tacked on after the fact though. I was trying to decide today if having it just end with her going outside and seeing the aliens would have been cliche/infuriating or better than what we got.

This movie sticks with me, that's for sure, I keep thinking about it!!

Hi! :) I've actually never reviewed this one, just to save you some time digging for a post that doesn't exist. I was thinking about it, and posted the trailer a while back, but nah. I only just watched it myself a few weeks ago.

However, just to get this out there: I loooooved it. I always enjoy Mary Elizabeth Winstead anyway, and John Goodman was so thoroughly creepy in a very believable way. One thing I saw another reviewer point out that I totally agree with is that nothing she does in the movie comes out of left field. Like, there are no Carrying the Idiot Ball moments where she has to do something obviously dumb to make the plot roll forward, and I appreciated that about it. Liked it much better than the first one. I can't recall what image you're thinking of from the back cover, although I know I must've seen it when I picked it up...

Like you, I can't decide whether the last ten minutes were awesome or really lame. (I assume you mean the plot reveal.) I'm choosing to believe SPOILER that she did make it to the town with the hospital and was able to do some good, because she's a badass. Also, her reaction of "REALLY?" was pretty funny. War of the Worlds comparisons notwithstanding. END SPOILER

I also saw someone say that this feels like a companion rather than a sequel to the original Cloverfield movie, like this was happening at the same time elsewhere in the world while that monster was tearing up New York, which I can see.

I'd watch it again.

oh yes that was TWITTER! Wrong social media interaction! :)

I like that she never made any stupid mistakes and, really, apart from the creepy child kidnapping storyline, it didn't matter that she was a female.

back cover images = her in the shower outfit outside. I mean, WTF! Epic spoiler.

I just can't decide if it would have been better for the film to have just ended after she emerged from the bunker, maybe with the alien ship flying by and a "oh shit" or if that would have been too cliche/infuriating and the random 20 minute action sequence was the better choice. Because when she got outside I was kinda ready for it to be done, I needed to breathe! But I had to hang on for another 20 minutes of alien attacks.

I haven't seen it yet but I really want to so I'm not reading. I really hope I love it though because I'm in the very small percentage that really dug Cloverfield!

It really has nothing to do with 'Cloverfield' overall. It's still pretty damn intense though.

I was enjoying it right up until they threw in the alien at the end. It felt like I was suddenly watching a different movie. All the same, John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead gave amazing performances. He had me so creeped out.

YES that is my biggest issue, was those last few minutes. I really did not like the creature design on the alien either, which sort of distracted me from enjoying any of that bit, which I think went on way too long. I think they should have had her just see the ship, get in the car and drive, maybe hear the radio and turn right. That whole over-the-top action sequence just felt out of place.

I went and saw this at the cinema, and I had such a good time! Loved the tension, the acting, the characters, THE TENSION.

I absolutely loved the original Cloverfield, so I was excited about maybe being able to learn more about what actually happened. But due to the timeline of this being set at the same time, it doesn't really add anything, just gives a different perspective.

I do wish they'd included more Cloverfield lore, I'd love to learn more about the happening, not just get more glimpses of strange things. I understand they're going to make a direct sequel of this one though, I AM EXCITED.

I'd be interested in seeing more of the world that the events of Cloverfield has created. Googling around it looks like the sequel is still just an idea more than a reality, but knowing Abrams, I'm sure he could get the support for the project.
