It's a hell of a thing to have brought to men back to life, however
briefly. [...] But as these stories are handed down to us, so must we hand
them down, lest such delicate personal lines by lost among the broader
strokes of history.

The book was a graphic novel based on the diary of the author's grandfather, so it was a very personal work for him and I think it made it more powerful to read.

As an American Studies major, I know I didn't really appreciate history until I started to read the stories of the "little people." I think we get so bogged down in names and dates that history loses it's meaning, and it's the personal stories that can give us a connection and meaning.

And I think too, it make me think of my late grandmother, who lived through WWII and I love telling the story of her life and it helps me understand that time period and the people who lived through it.
