I watched The Final Problem this morning.

I think it would have been better had it not been an episode of Sherlock.

Or it would have been better as the first episode of the season so we could have normal Sherlock episodes after it.

I have the same problem with Sherlock as I do with Doctor Who (oh gee, what is the common thread here?) -- I'm less interested in their deep dark backstory and just want to watch them doing what they do best. I don't need Sherlock to be in peril or his friends be in peril, I just want to watch him solve a mystery because it was so well done in that first season.

Ah well, at least now I get to go find all of your posts and read them as I have been scrolling past them since Sunday. :)

I totally agree! The first season was so strong and clever and they just went downhill with each subsequent one. I haven't even bothered with the one that's just aired.

Someone said it was typical Moffit crawling up his own ass. I don't watch Sherlock. It he has the same rep in Who fandom too.

Yeah, Moffat does it once and it's cool and then he's like OH I WILL KEEP DOING THAT THEN! How does he not see that once you've done the twist, you can't do it again? Has he never heard of M. Night Shymalan?

I saw it on Monday with my best friend. We walked out of the theatre like "What THE FUCK IS THAT?" We were shitting on it again today, hate that it came to that.

I'll go back to liking Doctor Who after this season, Moffat ruined it for me.

It's so frustrating because it was so much fun at the start when they took the old stories and gave them a modern twist. But then it just started getting more and more ridiculous and then this episode was just so full of itself. There was hardly any actual detective work AND IT IS A SHOW ABOUT SHERLOCK HOLMES WTF?!

Yeah, I have to admit, there were things that left a lot to be desired in that episode.

I don't need Sherlock to be in peril or his friends be in peril, I just want to watch him solve a mystery because it was so well done in that first season.

Yes, exactly!!

Yeah, I agree. I think there's always a danger that once you get to that level of ~drama, it's hard to resolve it and bring it back down to normal cases/adventures. So you end up with more and more ridiculous drama, it seems. The last episode was just nonsensical in the extreme.

My local PBS station flip-flopped Sherlock with Victoria so when I tuned in around 8, thinking I'd get Victoria for an hour, then Sherlock...Sherlock had started at 7.

At that point, they were on Flatholm Island...I know it didn't have that name but that's what it looked like to me and then, they established that Torchwood exists in this world...and Sherlock, Watson, Mycroft and some guy were doing these mind games his sister came up with.

I hate mind games. I don't do those Saw films.

However, I enjoyed the background and seeing Sherlock as a boy...was that one of Steven and Sue's boys? It looked like it.

*I also guessed she was the girl on the plane.

Then, they had that montage of Sherlock finally playing with his sister coupled with Sherlock and Watson finally being the detectives we love once again along with Rosie and I loved it. I felt satisfied.

However, it's not the last episode for me. I recorded the Abominable Bride and still haven't watched it...even though it's been a year.

I enjoyed it, but I can totally see where you're coming from. Seeing the Doctor be the Doctor, or Sherlock be Sherlock is so much fun! :D

I think the common thing is Moffat, eh?

I watched DW in English ... now I watch them again in German but I still don't get the story most of the time. It's not me, it's definitely Moffat!!!

I also prefer stories where the characters are doing what they do best.

But...I did like "The Final Problem." I found Eurus fascinating and I want to know more. The phone call scene broke my heart. I loved Watson being all soldier-y. With that said, I don't know if it deserves to be the series finale so I'm really hoping that's not the case.

I haven't seen it yet (watching it tonight!), but this resonated with me:

I have the same problem with Sherlock as I do with Doctor Who (oh gee, what is the common thread here?) -- I'm less interested in their deep dark backstory and just want to watch them doing what they do best. I don't need Sherlock to be in peril or his friends be in peril, I just want to watch him solve a mystery because it was so well done in that first season.

This. So much this.

You can tell that Moffat runs both shows. :P A friend of mine commented, shortly after she stopped watching DW because he took over, "He's really good at single episodes, but he's bad about entire seasons." (paraphrase)

Never got into Sherlock. I just don't like... the character Sherlock.

Don't get me wrong, I ADORE Sherlock Holmes, but that version? Just rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. Best friend adores the show though, but she started disliking it more and more in season 3, so now she's all nervous about season 4. :-P

I've never been in love with the show, it has a lot of flaws, but it was decent enough that I kept tuning in LOL. I think they set the bar WAY TOO HIGH the first season and then didn't know what to do with themselves. It fits into my classic "If the first season is really good, the show will suck" rule nicely.

That's a pretty good rule, actually... :-P All my favorite shows the first season has been the weakest.

Somewhere along the line, it went from 'solving mysteries' to DARKNESS ANGST ACTION. I'm not interested in that.

I really liked the third episode but I think you're right about this season being so much less about just solving a cool mystery and more about big danger and supper (Moffatt style) "isn't this so clever" reveals.

I am going to have to catch up with Sherlock just to know what has everyone is such an uproar.

But I agree - I enjoyed most of my TV better when it was less grim dark and more good ole' mysteries. Must be why I've been mainlining ST-TNG for weeks, lol.

Speaking of gentler media - I saw you enjoyed Moana. I can't wait to see it! I am loving Elena of Avalor.

LOL yes Sherlock Season 4 has been the equivalent eating something that tastes off then asking EVERYONE else to taste it so you can all be disgusted. So, yeah, watch it! :P

I'm still in season 1 of TNG LOL. I was chugging along but then my friend went out of town and we were doing the rewatch together and it got all screwed up. I did watch one the other day, "Too Short a Season" - episode 16. It was actually really good!

Moana was so good. But I kind of have a soft spot for Disney movies. Plus the music. It just felt like a return to form, even more so than Frozen.
