collage of movie posters from 2017

I watched 38 new-to-me movies in 2017, which isn't a ton. High quality TV has eaten up most of my viewing hours. But here are some of the highlights of the year for me when it came to full length feature films!

I started the year and ended the year with a Star Wars film in theaters. While I wasn't a big fan of Rogue One, it did pave the way for Last Jedi and made for some interesting tie-ins with Rebels. I'm glad I saw it though I wish I hadn't been spoiled, though that was partially my fault for not seeing it sooner.

LEGO Batman was freakin' hilarious and I really need to watch it again. It captured all the magic of the original LEGO movie, with jokes that reminded me of the original Muppets - laughs for the kids and lots of winks/nods to the adults so everyone had fun.

Tim and I saw Your Name in the theater on his birthday. He is the one who turned me on to anime and really showed me how much more it can be than what you see in the mainstream stuff. This movie was sweet and beautiful and I'm so glad we were able to see it on the big screen together.

Moonlight - I went into this movie knowing nothing about it except that it won the Oscar for Best Picture. I was blown away by the acting and emotional range of everyone in this movie. And after seeing the over-hyped La La Land, I was so glad this got the award because it is far more interesting and original and satisfying than anything else that was nominated.

Baby Driver was so much fun in the theater but I enjoyed it even more on the second viewing because Edgar Wright really put a lot of love into every aspect of this movie and the first time it all flies by so fast that it takes multiple viewings to catch the little things.

Get Out blew my mind, so well done, a movie that made you laugh and squirm at the same time. Images and ideas that stuck with me later and started some great conversations, and isn't that what great art is? Something that keeps you talking long after you've walked away from it?

It might not have been perfect, but it was just the right amount of creepy for me. An amazing set of child actors and a superbly creepy Pennywise made the hours fly by. I just hope part II can keep up the momentum.

Wonder Woman didn't blow me away, but I did enjoy it and if I was forced to watch a DC movie, I would always pick that one. Too bad it sounds like they dropped the ball with Justice League and her role there. But I could watch Gal Gadot all day. Origin stories are so overdone so I am looking forward to her next adventure now that introductions are out of the way.

The Big Sick surprised me, another one that I only knew from word of mouth plus I liked the cast. I think that fact that it is a true story makes it that much more fun to watch.

And, of course, Last Jedi was my last in theater movie before my Christmas marathon started. And I've got pages to talk about that, but suffice it to say, it was more than I could have ever imagined.

You can find my entire film diary for 2017 on Letterboxd with the movies that I watched but didn't love quite so much LOL.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of movies to me! I'm trying to remember, and I'm not sure if I saw more than one. :D
