The mythology on the X Files was just ridiculous. I think at some point in 5th or 6th season I realized it just wasn't going to work at all, and oh well. But for me I think I didn't get AS disillusioned, and I think what probably helped was that around 5th or 6th season was when I went away to college and there was one television in the dorm that was usually taken up with a group of girls watching dumb soaps or other things, and televisions in your room picked up like one channel or two if you were lucky, and which channel depended on which place in the dorm, and so I ended up watching SOME of the episodes recorded later, but I couldn't keep watching weekly, so I sort of slid out before David left and had never watched most of 8 or 9 until years later.
About probably 5 years ago we did a re-watch and I watched all of it from start to finish including the later seasons, and while I was super irritable at the time about mulder being gone, I DID like some of the things they did in the later seasons as it turned out - even if it didn't have the Mulder & Scully dynamic, but I also knew at that point it wasn't going to be sense making, so I could sort of contextualize it.
