Okay, so how long has George Lucas been attempting to rip-off lord of the rings? Well, not rip off, it appears that if the movie rights had been around in the 1980s, George might have gone for it.

I was watching "Caravan of Courage" yesterday, one of the live action ewok adventures. And there were LotR things all over the place. I mean, true, most of the stuff in LotR is classic myth/hero stories redone, but it was getting a little silly. The group setting out on a journey. Lots of short people. Giant spiders. Special items that have to be used by each member. There was a lot in that short movie that also ended up being redone for "Willow". The wolf monster that chases Mace and Cindel and that the ewoks eventually kill, looks exactly like the wolf creatures that attack Willow's village looking for the baby (though shrunk down to wolf size). Logray, the ewok shaman, is dressed very similar to the head magician in Willow. It is obvious he was working things out for that film while writing the stories for these.

That's why I feel it's worth buying some of these old shows. I mean, I wanted the Ewok Adventures for sentimental reasons, but re-watching them, it's like watching rough drafts of "Willow". I need to watch "Battle for Endor" because I feel like there's even more in that one (doesn't one of the villians turn to stone?). And Willow, by no means great art, gave us morphing. I should watch "Willow" again now that I've seen LotR so many times. I know it's not really a rip off, but I think Lucas might have trying to tap into that same mythology.

Speaking of special effects, two ILM artists have signed up for Celebration III. Yay! I love the behind the scenes stuff. Though it's all computers now, so it's not quite as cool as Phil Tippet explaining stop motion. Or Frank Oz talking about puppeteering. Still, it should be fun.

Special Collector's Edition of Spaceballs comes out in May. 2 discs of goodies. Was that one of the DVDs that MGM fessed up to not really widescreening but just adding black bars to the top and bottom of the normal film?

West County has been pretty quiet today, lots of phone calls, but mostly Bill & I have just been discussing the finer points of MST3K and Target shoplifting.
