The Chosen One
May. 19th, 2005 06:19 pm*deep breath* Boy, has it been a very interesting couple of days. Where to begin? How about, near the beginng?
As Palpy says, everything was going as I had forseen it until around 10pm. Suddenly, I get a call from
zaubervz telling me that they had been in an accident. And there were several accidents before/after their accident. He was freaking out, but everyone was alright. I told them to call me when they figured out what they were gonna do.
verdatum,
destertale,
maybemanda,
dstntp1lgr1m, and their buddies were already in line, so we joined them. Al showed up seconds later. The Senator was glorious, "STAR WARS EPISODE III REVENGE OF THE SITH" on the marquee (stupid me didn't take a picture but I'm sure someone will post images) and on the side, "Tonight, the SITH hits the FANS". Priceless. Doors opened around 11ish and they started to get everyone seated and popcorned. I snagged myself a red t-shirt. Did a bit of panicing as 11:30 rolled along and I hadn't heard from my folks. So I called on the cellphone and they were trying to get here, they were on the main road, but they were "driving slow because something was leaking". That's my folks - hardcore! And they made it!
Just in time too. The owner had just started a speech about how awesome Star Wars fans are, how we are "an enlightend cult" that the media just doesn't get. He talked about going to Skywalker Ranch and says that is is as close to Shangri-La as he's ever been. He talked about the "evil empire" that is major movie chains, and that our presence at The Senator on opening night made us the "rebel base" for the mid-atlantic region. We also watched a quick and dirty fan film made by a fellow in-line person, though he had only finished the Episode I line footage, it was fun to watch and remember. It might be worth it to go back to the Senator to see the finished film and relive the magic. Then the "This film has been rated PG-13" came on the screen and you could feel the buzz.
Then the 20th Century fox logo came into focus and the cheers started, when the Lucasfilm symbol gllimmered on the screen the applause was overwhelming. Then....silence.
a long time ago in a galaxy far far away....
STAR WARS
(explosion)
What can I say that you haven't already read a thousand times over these past couple days? This was so worth it. It was worth Episode I and II to get to this. There was action, adventure, humor, and gut-wrenching scenes of emotion. I left with my head spinning about all of the questions now answered and at the same time, the questions created. These questions weren't huge gaping hole in the story questions - more questions of morals, of how far a person can fall and what kind of person it takes to bring them back.
This movie was good. I was pulled into it so much that for awhile I hoped that Anakin would come to his senses and not turn to the dark side, that we would get an alternate universe where he slays Palpy right off the bat and has a happy family. But no, this is a tragedy. But unlike Hamlet or R&J, this tragedy ends with a new hope or two
I have to say, I was all ready to clap for Vader's big intro scene...but after seeing him slaughter the jedi, the younglings, and force choke his pregnant wife and attempt to kill his best friend...I couldn't bring myself to do it. He had become a monster. Watching the pieces fall into place was mesmerizing and painful. When Anakin realized that Palpatine is the sith lord behind it all and tells Mace Windu, I was so happy that he had made the right choice. But then I saw Palpatine mow down Kit Fisto and 3 other jedi without blinking an eye. I figured he would take out Mace, but then Mace had him cornered and Anakin walked into the room. And there it was. The nightmare's about Padme made my hair stand on end. And when Palpatine played that "I can teach you to save her" card, I really did not know what to do. Honestly, it's the storyline that Skylor is always playing out with his star wars toys - do I stay good but die, or go evil and live (or save lives). But after what he had done, what he had become, how could he ever believe that Padme would want to be with him.
"Battle of Heroes" is a whole different piece of music now. I put it on in the car today, and instead of the images from the little trailer video, now I see those final battles, Anakin vs. Obi-Wan, and Yoda vs. Palpatine. Anakin, so full of rage, so full of anger and hate directed at the wrong people...it is actually upsetting to hear the music now.
Padme and Anakin's dialogue was gag-worthy at times. Lucas cannot write "sweet talk". But it was forgivable for all of the other witty banter between Obi-Wan and Anakin. Finally, it wasn't more of the master/child/pupil apologies, they were now equals, Jedi, fighting together, brothers in arms. Working as a unit. When Palpatine tries to ditch Obi-Wan early on in the movie and Anakin refuses, you can see how pissed he is. He knows that Anakin's relationship with Obi-Wan is strong. But since Palpy is the puppet master, he eventually makes Anakin hate Obi-Wan too.
R2 got the crap beat out of him, but it was worth it to hear him scream down the hall. Very cute little scene with Obi on the comlink and R2 attempting to hide. It felt good to laugh with a prequel than at it. Geez George, where was this writing back in 1999? Ah, it's okay, I forgive you *buys more toys*
There is so much to talk about with this movie. So much I have to say but I'm going to stop because we have all summer and I know I will see it again. Needless to say, this movie was amazing. It is the best of the prequels, by far. It made me want to watch my original trilogy all over again (though I'm still a firm believer in the IV, V, VI, I, II, III viewing order, though you might as well add IV, V, VI to the end of the list again so you can end on a happy note). I'm so happy we get to go out on this note in Star Wars movie history.
I'm ready to see it again. and I know I will.
(okay, I swear this is the last time I post with this icon)

Date: 2005-05-20 12:48 am (UTC)I'm so happy that someone on my f-list doesn't vehemently hate Obi-Wan after watching the film! :D
And, I can finally use this... *points* :D

Date: 2005-05-20 02:23 am (UTC)yes, go see it so we may talk in depth.
Always love Obi. People are saying he should have killed Anakin but um, hello, he couldn't have or the original trilogy wouldn't exist. Plus, he couldn't kill him, he was like a brother to him, and it wasn't his fault he caught on fire!!!

Date: 2005-05-20 06:47 am (UTC)That's the thing (and this is all based on what spoilers I know) but, yes, I can feel bad for Anakin being used by Palpy, and I can appreciate that he thought he was committing all these crimes out of love for his wife, but it's when he chooses to kill the innocents is what loses that for me. I can see him attacking Padme for feeling that she betrayed him (that's what I've heard), but the younglings??? Gimme a flippin' break! I don't excuse Anakin for his actions... I felt he crossed the line, which ties in to my feelings about Obi-Wan... I know that many people are upset that he didn't kill Anakin... that Anakin deserved some sort of warrior-type, honorable death at the hands of his master, but I disagree. I always thought it was against the Jedi to kill an unarmed man, and that even if they did allow such things, that Anakin gave up his honor as a warrior when he turned on the Jedi. (The Jedi may not have always been right, but they don't deserve annihilation. AND... even if Obi-Wan should've killed Anakin in some form of mercy killing, I think there would be a great chance for Obi-Wan to just want to give up. He's just as human... he can have bad days, too. But that's what I love about him... that even though it probably crushed him seeing his brother, padawan, turn, he still fought the good fight... he did his job to protect the innocent. And, doesn't he have to try to rescue Padme? Isn't she still lying on the ground unconscious? Or, at least in some sort of peril?
Sorry... I've just read and seen too much 'F*** Obi-Wan' rants that I think it's starting to bother me a bit. :D
I just hope that the film plays out the way I have heard it will... that my initial opinions will be substantiated. :D

Hee! I completely love Obi-Wan... maybe even more now after seeing what he has to go through, and watching his heart ache so. ;_;
I LOVE your new icon! :D I 'adopted' a new one, myself. :D *points*
