I just wrote an e-mail to my prof who gave me the tickets to Serenity, telling him of what I thought of the movie. After reading it, I think it about sums up the evening, so I'm posting it here because it's far better than what I just posted. No spoilers, just me gushing.

Anyhow, the movie was fantastic! I begged and pleaded and got outta work an hour early, so we made it to D.C. around 9pm. Found Bronwen with no problems (I called and she was sitting about 2 feet from me). Went inside and her buddies had prime spots at the front of the line, so we got the first pick at seats, though it didn't really matter as the theater was TINY (though after being in the 900 seat Senator, everything seems tiny).

Morena "Inara" Baccara was there. Talk about feeling appreciated, it's one thing to post thank yous on message boards, but to have one of the stars actually fly out to the east coast and join us for the viewing brought tears to my eyes. I felt wonderful being a part of something so special. She even stayed behind after the show and signed autographs and posed for pictures (though my picture is stuck on my picture phone, which I have NO idea how to get off of there).

The film was prefaced by a taped intro from Joss. Classic Joss wit, telling us that this movie should never have happened, that it is because of the fans that he was able to create it, and also, if the movie sucks, it's our fault. "But let's not dwell on your failures" he said. Moving on, he told us that if we loved the movie, to go out and tell everyone to see it in September, that we had to promote the film because there were no big name stars to sell it. He also said "if you don't like the movie, this is a time for quiet." It was great being in a room of Joss fans, hearing everyone laugh at the right moments.

The film was fantastic. Like "Firefly", "Serenity" is very mature. I'm pretty sure it will get a PG-13 rating, unless Joss pulls back on some of the violence. Mal gets the crap beat out of him alot. In the commentary of the pilot episode, Joss and Tim Minear discuss how they had Mal, the captain, as a much darker character and FOX vetoed the idea and told him to lighten up. I think the Mal of "Serenity" is a mix of Joss' Mal and the one he adopted for the TV series.

It put together far better then I expected, with it being a rough cut and all. You could tell that the scenes had not been color-matched and the music was pretty much non-existant (I was told the placeholder music was actually from the "Waterworld" soundtrack). I'm not sure how much of it will make the final cut, this seemed pretty complete but you never know. It ran about 2 hours, maybe a bit less as we had Morena and Joss' intro starting at 10.

Originally, I assumed the movie was a remake of the pilot, but in fact, it takes place a little while after the final episode of the series "Objects in Space". Joss does a very good job of summing up what is going on and who these characters are. But it's hard for me to say how good of a job he did, since I'm a huge fan of the show and know the characters and their backstories/relationships already.

The movie felt like a nice long episode of Firefly. Lots of little one-liner jokes/riffs, character development, and a theme. The theme of the movie was belief. No matter what you believe in it, just BELIEVE and stay true to your beliefs. It was definately a big thank you message to the fans. The website for the movie is called "Can't Stop the Signal" and that line is said at least twice in the movie.

I think my boyfriend about summed it up when we were discussing the movie later. He told me he enjoyed it, he had only seen a few firefly, but he loves Angel, so he's used to the Joss wit. Then later he said "That movie was weird". I asked him why. He said "It was plot and character driven...I'm not really used to seeing that in a movie."...

...It was fantastic. There's something magical about showings like that, whether it be Star Wars at midnight or a preview months in advance. Everyone there understands. You have something in common with everyone in that room.

but that's a ramble for another time. :-)

I'm glad you had a good time! :)

Hey... off-topic... but is that theater selling shirts for their local SW fans? I know someone who wants one. (She's already inquired the theater, itself, but has yet to get an answer. She lives on the west coast, now.)

according to their website, they are still selling them. She might want to call them or post on the message boards, they seem to respond to those pretty quick.

If she gets desperate let me know and I'll see if there's anyway I can get up there again to get one for her.
