well that was insanely depressing
Nov. 15th, 2004 05:20 pmSat down to eat my lunch and I flipped thru our insane amount of premium channels and saw they were running "Veronica Guerin". I had been curious about this movie, as it's based on a true story, and true stories always suck me in. Plus I like Cate Blanchett (ever since my uncle said I sorta looked like her, I've been trying to see all of her movies...I mean, if she looks like me, I gotta make sure she's doing good work.)
Well, the film was good but really really depressing. And, actually, I probably shouldn't have been as surprised by the ending as I was. How often do TRUE stories about a journalists taking on the mob end well? And it was about an IRISH journalist, so double trouble. They had all the sad sad music ready to go for the end of the film. I felt a bit ignorant too, since she's practically a modern-day saint over there, as her brutal murder started their big anti-drug movement and got the government to change some archaic laws that were pretty much making life very easy for drug dealers. Colin Farrel has a 30 second cameo too, which threw me off cuz it was made right before he hit it big, so I kept thinking he was going to come back and save her, yadda yadda (too much hollywood). But no. At least it ended with the main people responsible for her murder being dragged off to prison and having all of their property seized. Though it didn't make ya feel better finding out that the drug baron who ordered her death only recieved 28 years in prison. And that "since the six years since her death, at least 196 other journalists have been murdered for doing their job." Apparrently, the week after she was shot, the people of Dublin organized all of these anti-drug marches and pretty much chased the dealers off the streets and made the drug barons go into hiding. Crime dropped %15 over the next few years too. I dunno, it was very interesting. It's so sad to realize that the only way things ever seem to get done in government is if someone dies violently.
BLAH! Anyhoo, I worked until 10:30 last night. It was insane, the mall was doing a charity fundraiser, and they stayed open from 630-930, and you were allowed to shop if you gave $5 to charity. And shop they did. We had to chase the last few people out of the store at 9:40. Then I came home and had dinner and my clock was all off so I played Sims and ended up not actually going to bed until 2:30am. So I didn't really wake up this morning until 1:00. Ah well. I'll do my library worksheet on Friday.
I finished "CLan of the Cave Bear". I think I'm gonna netflix the movie and watch it while AD is studying. Mom said she didn't remember it being horrible. I think I might get that and "Quest for Fire". I really think they should make a new "Clan of the Cave Bear" movie and do it all like "Polar Express". Because, let's face it, people dressed up like Neanderthals never look very good. With an entirly CG movie, you could recreate the environments and the people in a more true to life way. The main problem I have is Ayla's age. No one wants to watch a movie where a 10 year old girl is raped and gives birth to a half human half caveman baby. no no no. She would have to be older. But that wouldn't be so hard to do. I'm also not sure how to do their language. The cave men are constantly using hand signals, they don't really make noise. How would you make a movie with all hand signals? Especially in a language that we have no idea what it was like. Hm....*ponders*
I think I'm gonna go make icons or play a game and try to cheer myself up. Damn depressing movie.
