say it's all about the wordplay...
May. 27th, 2007 02:12 pmI watched 'Wordplay' last night. It started out pretty interesting, but I have to say I lost interest about half way through.
I really enjoyed the start of it all - where they talked to puzzle creators and we got to see them build a puzzle from scratch and how that's done. Also, the little interviews with celebrity puzzlers - Jon Stewart was the highlight of that group,as you would expect. (that's how I heard about this documentary in the first place, my mom mentioned Stewart's appearance). Anyway, that part was fun and silly. Then they started talking to the hardcore puzzle fans. And I was like "Oh, okay, lets meet some real people". But then it turns out the documentary is just gearing up for this big Crossword Puzzle Championship, and the "real" people we've talked to are the main contenders. But honestly? I didn't really like any of those people. They were the stereotypical "hardcore fan" - not very attractive (not that I'm shallow!), seemed sort of snobby about the whole thing, and I really could have cared less about their achievements because most of them acted like they were just so much better than that. I mean, whoopty-doo, you solved that puzzle in 2 minutes! Wow. Did you even enjoy it?
If you like crossword puzzles, the first half of this program is very interesting to watch, but once you feel yourself zoning out, feel free to turn off the dvd, because there's not a whole lot more edutainment left.
