lots of reading material
Jun. 16th, 2005 03:02 pmA ton of books came into the library for me over the past week, my backpack is very full. 'Cerebus' and 'Strangers In Paradise' both arrived, so
vertigozooropa has yet another chance to weird me out haha. You never told me 'Cerebus' was an Aardvark! Wonder if that's in the subject heading for the book "Aardvarks-Fiction". (
whitemartyr, I tried to order "Kissing Chaos" but no one had it!) I also checked out some "art of" books for SW and LotR plus 2 SW kids books (the one
persephones_rev told me about)
I'm about halfway through "Shopgirl" at the moment and I'm determined to actually finish it before I start another book. I had forgotten pretty much everything about it, but I still like it. Steve Martin has a different kind of writing style. You almost feel like you're sitting next to him and he's telling you this story. There's a lot more sex in the book than I remembered, but it is a major part of the story. I just hope that they work around it in the movie, as I have no desire to see Steve Martin getting it on with Claire Danes.
One of the people in my collecting club is ordering 'Star Wars and Philosophy' for $11.93, so I figured what the heck, and I signed up. I don't think I"ll be able to finish it before it's due back, and I am having trouble reading chapter after chapter. Seems like something I'd want to come back to and read a little bit at a time. I owe so many people money in the group, it's ridiculous.
I asked someone to pick up the Wal-Mart Early Bird kit back in April, which was $32
I had someone get a Jedi Force Yoda for my collection which was $8
I did a group order of pins from Pinusa.com which ended up being $72
I asked someone to pick up a Yoda pin for me which was $6
I put dibs on a Blue Royal Guard which will probably be $5 or $6
and now I just said I'd buy the SW&Philosophy book, which is another $12!!!!
And just to top it off, I was thinking of buying a Buffy figure from one of the guys too!
Luckily, most of these people will not be at the June meeting, which means I can put off paying them back until July (Or August, in the case of the Early Bird kit). But still. Honestly, if I just did simple math, I'd realize that ordering 10 pins at $7 a pop would equal $70! plus shipping. *headdesk* When it comes to my fandoms, I am the queen of the impulse buy. (
jimithingy said the cable technician that came by yesterday mocked him for having such an obsessed girlfriend!)
It's been a quiet day at the library, though I have kept busy. Lots of kids signing up for the summer reading program and trying to get books to take with them. I met a little girl who was going to Australia on the same program that I did! Except she was only 10, and I went when I was 16. I was so jealous. Also met a little boy with no understanding of personal space. He was only like 5 so I wasn't too upset but geez louise. See, the problem with the children's information desk is it has no back to it, you're just sorta out there. So he decided to look at whats on my screen, reach across me and touch the books on the screen that he has read (I was looking up stuff for him). His grandma was freakin' out. They were very grabby.
We watched "Meet the Fockers" on Tuesday night. That was painful. It was funny though, but I did have to get up once just because it was so hard to watch Ben Stiller suffer that much. They took the "Focker" gag as far as they could, it was pretty funny. Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Steisand were perfect in their parts. And whoever the kid was they found to play "Jorge"...well, I pity him hahaah. Those eyebrows had to be fake.
Once again I forgot to watch "The Inside"!!!! But BUT we did catch "Veronica Mars" pilot rerun on Tuesday. I liked it. It was a very strong pilot so I can't wait to see more. It's moving to Wednesday nights though, so I gotta remember to watch it next week. Maybe I'll remember to watch 'The Inside' too! Of course, if they keep it on Wednesdays, when Lost comes back on, VM will be in trouble. Honestly, there are 6 other days in the week here TV execs, could you spread out the good shows!!!!
"Last of the Mohicans" should be in today, w00t! I had the soundtrack on last night while I was making icons. I do love the music from that movie. Hopefully it will live up to my memory.
btw how do you all feel about this whole "tags" thing? Should I tag an entry like this? What the heck should I call it? And why in gods name would anyone want to read it?? Ah well.
come on 5 o'clock!

Date: 2005-06-16 08:01 pm (UTC)Dan's recommending comics again....
Date: 2005-06-16 10:26 pm (UTC)I forgot to mention Y-The Last Man on my previous list. It's honestly the best comic out there, except for all the others, tied for first place. It's published by DC-Vertigo, and written by Brian K. Vaughan.
The other two are Transmetropolitan and Hellblazer, each of which I've read voraciously. Hellblazer tends to be dark, but it's also very good. If you don't like dark stuff, avoid Brian Azzarello's run, but check out Mike Carey's, which is light on ickiness and heavy on magic.
Transmetropolitan is one of my favorite comics ever. Check out the author's blog. "brainjuice" is where you're most likely to find samples of his brain.

Date: 2005-06-17 07:24 pm (UTC)Okay, I just ordered all 4 volumes of "Y", the Hellblazer collection, and now I'm trying to figure out which of the transmetropolitans is the first one of the series...!
I just read the first book of SIP while on break, and so far, I love it!

Date: 2005-06-19 05:23 am (UTC)For the record, Transmetropolitan is no longer published. It was the best of its time, and its final issue was published the same month as the first issue of Y.
The fifth volume of Y will be out in one month, FYI, and if you're ordering these for the library, you might want to put a warning label on Vol. 4: Safeword, because the two part story from which it takes its name involves a very nasty dominatrix....
The volumes of Transmet are:
VOL. 1: BACK ON THE STREET
VOL. 2: LUST FOR LIFE
VOL. 3: YEAR OF THE BASTARD
VOL. 4: THE NEW SCUM
VOL. 5: LONELY CITY
VOL. 6: GOUGE AWAY
VOL. 7: SPIDER'S THRASH
VOL. 8: DIRGE
VOL. 9: THE CURE
VOL. 10: ONE MORE TIME
Volume 1 is only three issues long.
And I'm glad you're loving Strangers. It gets better, and keeps getting better for 40 or so issues. That's where I am now, and the story is changing gears, so I don't know what's next...

Date: 2005-06-19 05:40 pm (UTC)I'm pretty much only going to tag stuff that I might want to go back to - like my icon posts and perhaps links to humorous things, like Evil Yoda, so I can show him to people quickly without scrolling through ever entry like I do now.
