traveling thru time and space
Jul. 30th, 2005 01:43 pmOkay, if the West County library is a whole different planet to Crofton and Provinces, then Brooklyn Park is in a completely different universe. That is where I worked yesterday for 4 hours, which felt like 10. Not because it was slow, but because it was busy.
You see, BPK is located within Baltimore's city limits, but still in Anne Arundel County. It's right next to an elementary school, which is in turn next to the rowhouses and suburbs of the area. From the outside, the branch looks really cool. It's not a square building like CRO and WCO, it looks more like the Brady Bunch house, with random edges sticking out and multiple floors. But when you go inside, you see that the entire second floor is for the meeting room and the layout for the branch itself is illogical. The Children's section is completely seperate from the adults, nonfiction, and computer area. There is no information desk in the kids area, so pretty much they are alone with the books. And I mean, ALONE. These kids wandered in from who knows where, usually towing along some of there friends (one girl couldn't have been more than 13 or 14, came in with 5 kids all 5 or under, and informed us that she was babysitting today).
Apparently, every day before they open a line has already formed outside to get computer access. See, I'm used to working at branches with at least 14 computers available, and now people don't have to ask us for access, they just go sign on with their library card. BPK has about 9 computers. OLD computers. And since it's located in a poor area, most of the people can only get computer access from the library. So most of the 4 hour shift was signing people up for the computer, seeing if anyone left a computer, announcing that a computer was free, and telling other people to get off the computer. And then telling children to be quiet, quit running yadda yadda. As one of my co-workers put it - the babysitting branch. *shudder* Just not my kind of place. I don't think I could work in a branch where you have to throw people out on a regular basis. (They have a list in the back of who has been tossed out recently, that's just not cool).
Anyhoo, that was my day yesterday, and it pretty much wore me out. I played Guild Wars with AD and Vince for a bit, then tried to level up my new girl. Had Lemon Chicken for dinner (one of my top 5 favorite meals). Then finished Kissing Chaos
Just found out that the book on tape version of HBP just came in for my mom, which means we'll have it for the Maine trip! That might make things to smoother. I just have to not give anything away! I think I'll snag AD's gameboy for the trip too, maybe I can finally beat Mario & Luigi.
it is so very sloooooow at the library today. The rain yesterday didn't really cool things down like I'd hoped, it's still hot and humid out. There's a handful of people in here, most of them on the computers. Guess I'll go read more of my Firefly book.
