ooh- 'perfunctory' is a good example for me of the topic of this thread (of which I'm sure I have many other examples, but can't think of them offhand). I learned 'perfunctory' entirely due to the ending of.. Musings(?) of a Cigarette Smoking Man. It's a great word. I probably don't even want to think about how much of my random knowledge comes from XF..
