You know what, Warren Ellis is a cool dude.

[livejournal.com profile] vertigozooropa asked where i have been and it made me realize I hadn't posted in awhile! This week has been tres busy and I've been pretty much worn out by the time I got home. Or I was stressing over an icon for lims contest and never bothered to post any actual content here hehe. We've also spent a good chunk of time working on the Lego Death Star II. It's actually round shaped now!

Tomorrow, FOX will air the last 4 episodes of 'Arrested Development' that they have ordered. Probably tonight or tomorrow morning we will know what the official word is on continuing the program. I want it to keep going, but my gut says that this is the end. Will (GOB) Arnett is on Daily Show tonight and Micheal (the creator) Hurwitz will be on NPR tomorrow morning. One of them will have to say something!

OH! BenBellaBooks has 2 new books coming out that are not up on their website but I saw them when browsing thru the online book company that the library orders from -- a book of essays on Star Wars AND a book of essays on World of Warcraft! Looks like they are slated for summer of this year, but still, how cool will those be? I love the PopSmart series. They are my crack.

Speaking of academic books written about my fandoms - I'm reading 'sex and the slayer' now and I have to say it's really gotten my mind working in the whole realm of gender relations. And I think it answered my Veronica Mars question that I posted about earlier too...

So, I've read the first chapter of 'sex and the slayer', entitled "Good Girls". It talks about what makes a "good girl" character and after babbling about it at poor [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy, I realized that I have a knee-jerk reaction to the phrase "good girl". I immediately think of it in a negative way. But I don't think that's what the author intended. She was merely describing what we think of as a "good girl" and how that works in the series and how they tried to reflect the postmodern "good girl". Buffy and Willow both fell into this category, though there were a lot of "ifs, ands" and “buts” saying that both would be mentioned agian in the following chapter “bad girls”. But anyway, it got me thinking today about Veronica and Lily and how I was very conflicted about how I was supposed to feel about them, and I think I have an inkling why I was so confused.

Ya see, at her core, Buffy is a “good girl” as is Willow - my two favorite characters and the two best friend females of the Buffyverse. In VM, Veronica and Lily occupy this space, but they don’t fall into the good girls category. Well, Veronica probably does, but Lily probably has more points in the “bad girls” side. Her sexual promiscuity being the big red flag. Anyway, I’m obviously used to rooting for characters like Buffy & Willow, so suddenly having a character who’s friend is not a mousy Willow but a...well, she was more like Faith except privelaged! And I wasn’t ready for that because I was equating her with Faith, who’s a bad girl!

I also have to say, when describing traits as “masculine” and “feminine”, dudes get a bad wrap. I think I must only know sensative, new age guys because the typical “masculine” traits don’t really apply to my guy friends. For example, it talks about how “feminine” traits are caring for people, putting priority on family, being in touch with nature, -- happy things. So what does that say about “masculine” traits? every man for himself, I rule you and I shall drill for oil here?

Another great bit was talking about how many feminists attack Buffy for being pretty, wearing makeup etc. Joss’ response apparently was that if he wanted to make “Buffy the Seperatist Lesbian” as a PBS miniseries, he could have, but no one would have watched it.

Bugger me, I had something else to say and my brain just went *poof* so I shall hopefully remember tomorrow and post it then. Tomorrow is my friday off! yay! I need to get my five icons done for [livejournal.com profile] the_showcase and my icon for [livejournal.com profile] ats_lims or I will be eliminated!!! NooOOoooOOO!

Hey! This is the mod from [livejournal.com profile] ats_lims. I just wanted to remind you to get your entry for challenge #4 in, you still have about 24 hours. If you don't think you have time to enter, just skip the challenge, I'd hate having to disqualify you. ;)

You know about the guy thing... I know exactly what you mean. I have been blessed to know lot's of really cool new age sensitive dudes,( all heterosexual mind you), Who combine several good classically masculine and feminine qualities. I also, have a few close "traditional" masculine friends though. They are really cool guys, except for the fact that they occasionally need to be hosed down with a chemical foam to remove excess testosterone. Nearly any little thing can produce a very combative attitude as they proceed to metaphorically compare dick sizes. It would be comical if it weren't so sad... actually, it's comical anyway. :)

hehe yes, it's hilarious when guys are overly-masculine, but really depressing when girls are overly-feminine. Go figure. Maybe it's because, to be overly-masculine, you have to have a decent bit of self-esteem and it reflects that, while girls who tend to be overly-feminine latch onto the stuff that shows how much they are not happy with their looks, body etc...

You gotta read this book next. Soon as you finish the other two, this is your next circ from the Sam library!
