sam's checkouts for today
Feb. 20th, 2006 03:25 pm3 of the graphic novels I ordered came in today -
Grant Morrison's WE3
Brian K Vaughan's Ex-Machina v2
Warren Ellis' run of Hellblazer
also checked out 3 cds
Paul McCartney the russia album
Maroon 5 acoustic 1.22.03
Jesse Harris and the Ferdinandos While the Music Lasts
bringing me to a grand total of 24 items currently checked out. I need to learn to read faster! haha. Doesn't help that the two books I'm currently in the middle of are both not library books (sex and the slayer and alias) and I keep playing Lumines instead of reading 'slave day' by Rob (veronica mars) thomas.
oh well, that's why the library gods gave us renewals.

Date: 2006-02-20 08:53 pm (UTC)I haven't read the first issue of WE3, because it sold out before I even knew it was there. :-( It's so very different from anything else out there, but oh so good if you read it in the right mindspace.
As an added bonus, it was drawn by Frank "I'm so very very important that I only have to draw covers from now on" Quitely. And he's a pretty cool artist.
I have to say I don't appreciate that trend. Artists gets so popular that they stop doing what made them popular. Alex Ross and Frank Quitely do almost as many covers as internal pages. (well, that's a bit far-fetched, but...) I do wish Jeff Matsuda had actually drawn more Buffy and Angel comics, because seeing his artwork on the cover led to disappointment when I realized he hadn't done the interiors. :-(
Ex Machina is...good. I don't know what else to think of it, but I was a bit annoyed that book 2 didn't deal with that serial killer (or whatever mad criminal is mentioned in book one, and then forgotten about)
Which Ellis book did you get? There's Setting Sun and Haunted. Setting Sun was awesome and gruesome. Haunted, I felt, took me to the dark places that make me uncomfortable, and I have trouble really enjoying it.
I returned a very large stack of TPB's yesterday. I still have three at home. Most were superhero. That's the most popular kind, so I guess that's that. I do wish we had more Vertigo-type TPBs.
I think my library has gotten rid of them. I know I bought a Sandman and a Books of Magic there, but I don't know what else they've sold.
I should go into Vancouver, and check out the library there. It's huge. Have you seen Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever? There's a long gunfight outside of a light-brown Roman Colosseum. That's the Vancouver Library. It's also in The 6th Day (Schwarzenegger).
But, yeah, our big library is a colosseum. Type in "Vancouver Library" on a Google image search.

Date: 2006-02-20 10:52 pm (UTC)WE3 was not what I was expecting just from the cover. I think since Grant Morrison was reccomended to me in the same breath as Vaughan and Ellis, I...well I didn't expect a bunny in a mech suit on the cover! haha. I really want to read it now though!
The Hellblazer that came was 'Setting Sun' and the first page makes me want to spew already. I might not be equipped to handle Hellblazer stories. I noticed that none of the libraries that I usually get comics from carries 'haunted' so it might have disturbed more people than just you.
It's so sad what little love GN's get in the library. I'm hoping I can beef up our collection this year, buy something that is not x-men or spiderman related. If you really think they have thrown them out, you should say something. Anytime a patron brings stuff up like that in our branch we think twice about throwing things away and usually look into ordering new stuff.

Date: 2006-02-21 12:13 am (UTC)There are four stories. In the first Constantine is called by the cops to deal with an apartment room where so many murders have happened that anyone who goes in there becomes instantly homicidal. In the second, a Japanese war criminal cannot rest in peace until he's told someone every last atrocity he'd ever committed.
I forget what the third story is, and the fourth is fairly tame (if I remember correctly), dealing with all of John's old girlfriends.
They're all well-written, but as we've discussed, they're quite intense.
I've always been reluctant to request that my library get certain books. It sounds like complaining, and it's the kind of thing I'd want to discuss with someone like you, instead of someone like them.
So, move to Surrey, and get a job at the Newton library, okay?
