so, friday night we had the gang over to watch 'Mirrormask'. [livejournal.com profile] dstntp1lgr1m was the only one who had seen it before (it was his dvd we watched actually THANK YOU) so everyone was glued to the screen.

The plot to 'Mirrormask' is very simple. Helena has a fight with her mother about their current situation (they run a circus) and later that night, her mother becomes very ill and is rushed to the hospital. Helena deals with both her desire to "be in the real world" and fighting her mothers illness when she is sucked into another realm by the "dark" version of herself, a world that resembles the scribbles that Helena has covered her room in. Is it a dream? Is it reality? Doesn't matter since the only way to get out/wake up is to find the Mirrormask.

The plot really has to be simple though because what takes front row in this movie are the visuals. Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean craft a world uniquely their own. If you've ever seen the cover of a Sandman comic, flipped thru a copy of 'Coraline' or read 'wolves in the walls', you know the style I mean. It is one of the most unique looking films ever. Of course, teaming these two up with the Jim Henson Company didn't hurt either. You really feel like you're in this whole other realm. It moves and works like a dream.

'Mirrormask' reminds me a lot of 'Dark Crystal', it's really a family movie, something for kids and adults, but there are times when it's just a bit freaky and you think that the kids might go running for the hills. It had it's Labrynth moments too (though [livejournal.com profile] blu_harvest's attempts to spot david bowie's crotch proved fruitless) since she pulls a Sarah, wishing away something on a whim and then actually having it come true. And there's a bit of 'Wizard of Oz' dashed in there too, just for good measure.

Yes, I think that if you are a fan of either of those movies (I am) you'll really really like 'Mirrormask'. It's beautiful to watch (I'm downloading screencaps now...so maybe some iconing later) and it leaves you with that warm, family feeling in your stomach.
