origins of orangerful
Apr. 7th, 2006 12:01 amI was never really sure if I'd explained this here or on other people's memes. And I had a friend ask "what the heck is an orangerful?" so I figured I would make this post. Especially since I've aquired a few new readers. :) And after you read this, if you feel so inspired, I'd love to read the origins of your livejournal screen name.
Right, so think way back. Waaaaay back with AOL's instant messenger first became a free service anyone could download. My grandmother (she's so hip and with it and a long time AOL subscruber) emailed us to tell us that there was this new program we could use to talk to her online. We were like "really! tell us of this new technology!" So we downloaded AIM. Then we set about the task of thinking up a cool screenname.
Mom starts to go thru the star trek and star wars references she can think of. "NAME TAKEN TRY AGAIN". Finally, in a fit of rage, she typed in "orangerful" - "SUCCESS!"
Of course, the AIM thing never caught on so much with my parents. My grandmother used it for a bit but her eyes got pretty bad so it didn't last long. But I kept playing with it. And then it became a big deal and everyone had it.
In high school I tried to change it up, picking username that related to something I was doing (drummajor, names from characters in the school plays with '99 at the end) but all of them were so dated. I knew I couldn't be drummajor after I started college! I enjoyed band but it didn't define me. I couldn't use the names from the plays because I wasn't even in the plays, I just sorta harassed everyone. So I reverted back to orangerful.
It's a great screenname because it is so random. It means nothing. Well, it meant nothing - now it means ME! I'm more than one fandom, I'm more than my work, I'm more than my hobbies, I'm SAM - and online I'm orangerful. Its my screen name whever I go. It's gotten to the point that people who are talking about me will double check my identity by saying "orangerful"? (
simontrueheart can tell you that little story).
If you google "orangerful" you'll get message boards that I've been to. Heck, I just did it and found this photo of me at the Senator back when I was camping out for 'attack of the clones' tickets! Hm...412 hits! not too shabby!
Anyway, so that's it. I'm orangerful. It's a total nonsense word that means everything I am. Just like dancing Angel over there. dance angel dance!

Date: 2006-04-07 04:18 am (UTC)Everyone had names like "SexyChick95" and "kutekitten."
I asked her if I could have a screen name on her Prodigy account and she said yes. Being 13, I impulsively typed:
"ToothlessHag" And we giggled about it. Everyone on Prodigy loved it! "LOL! FUNNY HANDEL" Thats what they used to call it.
We got AOL shortly after, but they only had enough characters to have it say "UglyOldHag." So it stuck. People dont quite understand my AIM name now.

Date: 2006-04-07 04:58 am (UTC)i think you know my screen name is Pearl Jam related.
wanted to use flipside from the lyrics "said he'll see me on the flipside" from PJ song Off He Goes on the No Code album, but flipside was taken, so i just reversed the flip and the side and got sideflip. :)

Date: 2006-04-07 05:49 pm (UTC)When I first got the NET and started surfing in a BIG way...I wanted to start palying online games. Well....I had no cash to play games (like WoW) so I looked for free stuff.
I found Furcadia! (http://www.furcadia.com/) Well...I had also just got done reading The Jedi Academy Trilogy where Luke was re-building the Jedi Temple/School on Yavin. In this book is a set of twins from Han and Leia named Jacen and Jaina. Well I liked the name Jacen and wanted to use it as my online Character. Well, Jacen was taken I think and since this game is "fantasy based" I used "Jacen_True_Knight .... I started palying this at the start of college (1998)....and it consumed my life....so I stopped....well...after a few years I went back and could not remember my password so I just made a whole new guy called JacenTK2.....well.... over time I started to use Jacentk2 in everything....my AIM....My Yahoo....my e-mail....everything....
And thus "jacentk2" came to be
