Preacher: Dixie Fried came in for me today, all the way from the Carnegie Free Library of Swissvale

And my question about how a library can carry the Preacher comics was answered, at least for this small library in Pittsburgh.

There's a small sticker on the front that reads "SHELVE BEHIND DESK", the words underlined in red ink.

Now, my question is, what if a kid comes up and ASKS for the Preacher comics, do they deny their existence or hand it over? Hm...perhaps I shall email the library and find out!

I would assume that, as with cigarettes and porn, we would simply not provide these things to minors.

The best solution would be to label them "not for persons under the age of..." and choose a number.

I wonder if they do that with Harry Potter too... :)

see, how we work is that if someone asks for it, they can have it, so if a kid came up to me and asked for something that was PG-13/R in content, I would give it to him. Now, if he just said he wanted a comic book with a vampire in it, then I'd probably grab something else, but if I was specifically asked for 'Preacher' they would get it.

Which is probably why we don't have it in our system. And why I want to find out how this library handles it. And what other stuff do they have behind their desk???!

Just be careful. If you're caught providing pornographic material to minors, you could be held responsible. A man is currently being sued for selling a comic about Picasso with nudity in it to a 9-year-old.

I've heard about that case but not the details. must do a search...

doesn't really matter too much here as we don't carry Preacher, or any real hardcore comcis for that matter. So far, I'd say 90% of the comics I've read I've had to order from outside our county. So I'm curious to know how they deal with their more mature selections. You'd need a pretty big desk to shelve it all behind the counter. I wonder if this library does ID patrons, or at least looks at them and sizes them up. This is the first one that I've recieved with an actual note on it saying to hide it, all the prevous Preacher's haven't said anything.

We don't really hide anything here. I've moved the adult comics into their own section, but our adult comics are mostly the darker Batman and Punisher books. Nothing that could get us into trouble, were pretty conservative.

I did order 'Y the last man' volume 1 with my collection development money. But I don't think that needs to be hidden behind a desk. No armadillo rapes in that book.

after a quick google search I found this (http://www.thebookstandard.com/bookstandard/news/retail/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001218813) which makes it sound like it's mostly a George law and that the guy who is in trouble has been in trouble before, and that it was pretty much an accident.

Though what genius marketer put pornographic stuff in the comics that were meant for Free Comic Book Day?

a george law is me typing too fast because I'm on the desk at work and should be working and not proof reading.

should be a Georgia law, just for the state, at least, the way the article keeps talking about it...
