Okay - disclaimer. My X-Men knowledge comes solely from the saturday morning cartoons that I used to watch when I was little, the previous 2 movies, and miscellaneous comics I've picked up over the past few years. I also really enjoyed the first two movies. If I had to rank the three X-Men movement, I'd say 2 is my favorite, followed by one, with number 3 in third place.

Also, I went into this movie with my expectations pretty low. After all the fan-wanking online, I had mentally prepared myself for a 'Batman & Robin' bad movie. It's a popcorn movie, and for a popcorn movie it's fun. For an X-men movie, it falls short. But the cast gives it their all, which I think it what makes it so watchable.

I felt like the writers and director had seen the other two xmen movies. Maybe (or should I say obviously?) have read the (Joss Whedon) comics. But I don't think they "got" them. Or perhaps they just thought they got them. they understood the meanings behind the stories. But I don't think they really did. And I think that is the biggest flaw in the movie. Because if you wrote down things that happen (Magneto bad, humans don't like mutants, big fights, one baddie vs one goodie) you'd see a lot of similar things, but the execution was poorly done.

Don't pay late night prices for this one, but do hit it up as a Matinee. And stay until the end of the credits. THE VERY END. This movie does not have the brains of the first two, but it is made for the big screen. Lots of things blowing up and pretty effects that will probably be less cool while watching it on your home theater (unless you're [livejournal.com profile] simontrueheart and actually have a HOME THEATER).

Okay, you know what, go see this movie but then don't think about it ever again. Because it's fun while it's happening, but afterwards you're just sitting there going "wait, but what...and then the....but who was....why did they...oh...so when does Superman come out again?"

I actually agree with a lot of what the Baltimore Sun critic said today. I'm assuming he's a fan of the X-Men since he seems to know everyone's "human" name along with their codenames, whether or not they were ever actually said in the movie.

I managed to stay spoiler free for this film. Apart from the trailers and the one clip from 'The Tonight Show', I had not "seen" any of the movie. I think that helped. I don't feel X3's story was as strong as the first two. I don't see myself flipping thru the TV channels and getting sucked into watching it over and over like I did with the first two. But it was fun.

I do have a few complaints though. I will try to keep them vague so that if you insist on reading this before seeing the movie I won't ruin too much for you.

I did not feel that these writers knew the character too well. My biggest complaint? Mystique and Magneto. In my opinion, as ruthless as he can be, he would never have left her like that. She's more than a hench-woman to him; she's like his daughter, or his mistress, or ... something. To have their relationship end the way it did in the film was very wrong. Plus, even if Magneto didn't feel anything for her, he would have used her as a poster girl for violence towards mutants and helped fuel is cause. Also, in the other two films, I always felt Magneto's cause was a bit more in the gray area. You understood his side but you knew it was not the right way to go. He managed to walk next to the line after he'd crossed it so he wasn't just a petty villian. But the Magneto we see in X3 is hell bent on starting this war and his logic is not earth logic. Which I think really robs him of a lot of his appeal as a villian. He went from having a point to just being unrealistic. Even after seeing the power that Jean/Phoenix has, he takes her along. Wha?

[livejournal.com profile] blu_harvest & I were discussing Scott too. As far as characters go, he's pretty unappreciated. But he is an important character. He's a little whiny bitch in the first movie, and he doesn't get to do a whole lot in the second movie - but that's OKAY. He's the leader. He's the "goody two shoes", the one who keeps them on the right path. I think removing him from this film was a mistake. If only because he needs to be around to make Wolverine appear to be even more badass. Because you're only a badass when the guy next to you has a stick up his butt.

This movie's script felt very sloppy. They tried to handle too many stories in one movie. Dark Phoenix should have been what this movie was about. Mutant cure could have been X4. But instead they tried to cram these HUGE plots into one tiny little movie. And they pretty much ask the viewer to just accept it all. Angel was totally wasted (they never actually call him that but I can't remember the characters name either).

I think the writers were scared of Jean/Phoenix. They created this character that pretty much had absolute power, and then they realized they didn't know how to handle her. Both [livejournal.com profile] whitemartyr and [livejournal.com profile] blu_harvest brought up Dark Willow when talking about Jean/Phoenix. They made her so powerful that no one could really attack her, so what do you do with a character like that? Apparently, they just write "Jean stands next to Magneto" for the rest of the script and promptly forget about her.

Also, in the other two films, I'm pretty sure the innocent bystander casualties were never this high. It's something I always liked about the X-Men movies. I feel like the random body count in this film was a lot higher than the other two. Heck, the big stand off in the first movie, with Prof X and Magneto outside the police station, that was intense because X did not want innocent law enforcement people to die. Why was there no effort to turn the mutants that were wtih Magneto to the side of the Xmen??? Nah, we'll just kill 'em.

Other random thoughts:
Magneto was SO Osama Bin Laden with his terrorist video announcement. Hm.
When Rogue walked off the bus at the cure clinic, the image that came to my mind was a young girl arriving at a Planned Parenthood clinic.
If you have a copy of 'Astonishing Xmen' by Joss lying around, find a picture of the doctor in the first book, the one where she shows Beast the cure...gee, she looks almost EXACTLY like the woman they cast for the movie.
That one chick looked like a dude. The evil girl with the clap of doom.
btw - all mutants from the city are goth and evil.
they should rename the movie "The Storm and Logan Show"

You remember the "empty mutant" in the Moira McTaggart video? When they were talking about ethics in the classroom scene....

Xavier possesses that body.

xmen 1 and 2 were definitely better. was disappointed with xmen 3. and the end after the credits made it seem like there will be an xmen 4, but as far as i know xmen 3 is it. what a way to end it.

I just saw it.. I'm trying to collect my thoughts so I can write up my own review. But in regards to your random thoughts, I agree w/Magneto as Osama.. that's exactly what I thought of. The Rogue thing reminded me of a Concentration Camp (dunno.. I guess the gray reminded me of trains or something.) That chick TOTALLY looked like a dude--I was like, "Is your power being transgendered??" Hehe "evil clap of doom" sounds like an STD. And it also seems like all mutants from the city have the same "High Jumping, Running Fast!" power.

Also, their wooded hideaway reminded me of the Quidditch World Cup.

Because you're only a badass when the guy next to you has a stick up his butt.

Well said.

They held mildly true to the orginal comic not the fox morning cartoon so much.

You really should read the wiki. It fills in the blanks that you don't remember or didn't ever see. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Men is a pretty good one...

For the record which i actually knew this one off the top of my head -- Warren Worthington III was actually more commonly called "Archangel". not so much angle.

His part of the movie is still kind of wierd though. mainly not so much because it was bad, but more so cause I still remember him in "the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse."

Anyway, what no comment about ghost rider being in the works? lol. Ghost Rider will kick all x-men's butt! Really make ya think is them releasing Ghost Rider the only reason they added Archangel to the script... hmm should be an interesting movie when it comes out.
